STAR WARS: RESISTANCE Discussion Thread!

I'm filled with regret that they didn't use Thrawn as the main villain of the sequel era, considering his sheer popularity and presence on screen (Rebels did villains right, for the most part).

As much as the SW fanboy in me can't help but imagine the possibilities, the realist in me suggests that nothing behind the scenes would have changed if Snoke had been Thrawn. TFA would have played out broadly similarly, Rian Johnson would still have been picked for Episode VII, where he would have found some way to meaninglessly kill him off.

I'm not sure Filoni's usage of the character was vastly better, but at least he's theoretically on ice somewhere as opposed to dead.

I was thinking more along the lines of an Heir to the Empire phoenix-blitz across the galaxy, followed by major plot points from Zahn's sequel novels. That whole trilogy is a masterpiece. Maybe if Disney had the acorns to have anything bad happen to major characters except for minor emotional turmoil once in a while, they could try such a mind-blowingly epic plot.

So for internet points then. Yay.

I vote we continue in the STAR WARS: RESISTANCE Discussion Thread which appeared first - which I believe is this thread :)

Four years ago we started the STAR WARS: REBELS thread and in that time, there were many against it and the content it provided. As the years crawled on, good will came to the Star Wars: Rebels thread, and it got quite a bit of traction, easily becoming one of the largest threads in the Fantasy Flight Games: X-Wing Subforums. Something we can all be very proud of!

The time has come once more for an animated series directed by franchise Veteran Dave Filoni! The same Dave Filoni who brought us the critically acclaimed Star Wars: The Clone Wars and most recently, Star Wars: Rebels. Soon, I'm sure Star Wars: Resistance will reach much of the same glowing praise, as its premise is quite unique to Star Wars, and aims to bring something wholly new to the Intellectual Property!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Star Wars: Resistance will follow the story of a young pilot by the name of Kazuda Xiono , a hotshot pilot recruited by General Leia Organa's Resistance to covertly gauge the ever growing strength of The First Order's forces! While the series will follow Kazuda and many new faces and ace pilots, we will see many familiar faces too, such as Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi fame, who will be reprising their roles by Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie respectively! How cool is that? It's wonderful to me how seriously animation and gaming media are taken these days, often getting very enthusiastic actors to reprise their roles with little effort. It's great and far cry from the old days!

The idea for Star Wars: Resistance came from Dave Filoni's interest in WWII aircraft and their famous fighter pilots, and his grandfather was a fighter pilot as well, Dave's uncle, flying restored planes! It's a big influence and part of Filoni's life, and let's not kid ourselves around, we have to agree with Dave Filoni here, Star Wars has a lot of high speed stuff going on. It's essential to the Star Wars formula! Name one film without something going blazing fast, whizzing around all sorts of dangers. I'll wait! Finally, the show will be heavily inspired by anime, which is cool because there's all sorts of high octane anime out there- but I imagine chief influences are Gundam and Macross, but not quite in that order! You can also bet your top dollar that the famous TIE FIGHTER animation had a hand in inspiring this effort! Allegedly the whole team's wanted to do a cool anime-thing for a long time!

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Personally, I'm expecting this series to take a fair bit of inspiration from ye olde Anime, largely, Robotech: Macross Saga. It's such a proper inspiration for something like this, and the aforementioned TIE Fighter animation proved Star Wars has the mettle for such a thing! Don't be too surprised if the show is mostly anime-looking with CG models, since that's quite inexpensive. Hand drawn would of course be preferable, but hey, it's 2018. Things are expensive!

I think this is gonna' be great, but remember, the path will be long and hard. There will be naysayers that say it's dead on arrival, and maybe even the pilot episode (ahah, I hadn't even considered that pun...) will be as blah as Rebels' pilot episode. But maybe it'll be extremely cool! One way or another, I say, hey, stick with it! It'll probably only get better.

idk man i got a pretty fancy op and I got a load of messages telling me to make a thread

This one has a better quality OP, stop your whining.

So, David Filoni doing starfighters. I hope there's only a handful of named pilots in a larger unit, so that battles can have reasonable casualty counts, instead of plot armor heavy Rogue and Wraith squadrons.

I don't get anybody that enjoyed Rebels but thought the Clone Wars was boring. Rebels lost my interest far more often than The Clone Wars did. Worst case scenario, if you hate a story arc of TCW , you just skip it and go to the next one, frequently with a completely different set of characters, problems, and outcomes. Not possible with Rebels. Probably the best example of how TCW was better than Rebels is that in TCW , the bad guys sometimes won, and good guys died. While we knew that the main guys, Anakin, Obi-Wan, etc, weren't going to bite it, we never knew if Ahsoka, Rex, Fives, or one of the others would survive. This made us actually care for the characters, and made the bad guys, though frequently comical, at least somewhat competent. Rebels rarely, if ever, had that. Let's hope Resistence learns from Rebels ' mistake.

The sequel era is unsalvageable.

No amount of fleshing out will make it anything else than rebel cosplayers but smaller and more idiotic vs a parody of the empire but bigger and more idiotic. They can explain why the Rebel cosplayers are smaller or how Smoke pulled a million Star Destroyers out of his ***, or how galaxy-wide water poisoning made everyone a r-word, but that's probably already done in a bunch of novels, and doesn't change the fact that the setting is broken on the fundamental level.

Amen. At this point, I don't know what they could actually do that would make me enjoy the ST anymore. I'd be more interested in seeing how things played out from RotJ to get to TFA than a direct prequel for TFA. The Aftermath books sucked at that, and surely there are stories to tell during the gap?

This would have been awesome, and honestly, what I kinda expected they would do. Much like Marvel has adapted comic storylines or elements for their movies, I expected the ST to adapt EU ideas. While they seem to have taken a few ideas, such as Han and Leia's son going Dark side and being a whiny punk (I hate Kylo and Jacen, can't you tell?), in broad strokes they majorly dropped the ball by trying to retell the OT and reset everything to that point.

This ! RepublicStarfighter-Timeline6.jpg.9a547e674b829d07fe4a006b1dc65f58.jpg Old Republic fighter , Some kind of variant?

Seems unlikely TBH - it might be artistic license, but it looks like it has a single central engine as opposed to two split engines.

Well if its anything like Phoenix Squadron...

If anything the more named pilots the better, it means we'll churn through some actual casualties that effect the story.

I'm going to say it now, if Filoni can't get past his over attatchment of characters more prevalent of the Rebels era and return to his Clone Wars era view then this show is going to feel very lack luster.

I'm hoping they make the First Order actually menacing this time around as well, an ominous threat that is a serious deal everytime our characters encounter them. Make them scary like they should be.

Make our antagonists mostly pirates and criminal organizations as suggested in the book Bloodlines. People who can vary from weak and dumb to tough. Or the Imperial Remnant.

Ultimately I want to know what happened to Ezra and Thrawn especially, and I hope both return to be on this show as characters for the Resistance and First Order respectively. I just hope the show doesn't eventually become Rebels 2.0. There are a lot of new things in this era that are fascinating and left entirely unknown and open to explore.

I just hope (as others have said) we get to see more of Tallie. She’s a babe (seriously, go look her up on IMDb)! She’s almost as sexy as the A-Wing she Pilots. ;)

If anything all these topics about TV shows should be in the appropriate Off Topic forum... But these forums are one of the least moderated forum I've ever signed up for.

Well the TV series have all been - so far, anyway - a pretty heavy source of new material for the games.

I mean, from 'Clone Wars', what got picked up or turned into canon for X-Wing:

  • AC-170
  • YV-666
  • Z-95 (...-ish)

And from the 'Rebels' series, we picked up (or became canon again) for X-Wing:

  • Ghost
  • Assault Shuttle (Phantom)
  • Sheathipede (Phantom II)
  • YT-2400 freighter
  • Imperial Assault Carrier (Gozanti variant)
  • TIE Advanced Prototype
  • TIE Defender
  • C-ROC Gozanti
  • Mandalorian Protectorate Starfighter
  • Shadowcaster

So discussion of the new series is pretty natural fit for the main X-Wing forum, as it works fairly well as a preview of what might be coming soon. (I mean, heck, we are still hoping for a few more things from Rebels, after all - Hondo Ohnaka's captured Sentinel-class shuttle 'Last Chance', for one, not to mention the new TIE Interceptor/TIE Defender pilot Vult Skerris)

so much this!

This show represents our best chance of reintroducing one of the most beloved characters from the EU.

You guys are so good to me.

And I agree, we really do need a reasonable amount of Red Shirts... But I'd also like each squad member to be a realized character, so when something happens or they die, it means a lot.

Fully agreed. Like, on all accounts. Filoni really does have trouble letting go of beloved characters, and as a fellow writer I totally get that? But you have to, sometimes. You've gotta do what makes sense for the story above all else. Luckily, most of what Filoni's done is exactly that. I just hope it continues to serve the story, and not his desire to keep his characters alive no matter what.

Star Wars: Rebels gave X-Wing Miniatures Eight ships during its lifetime, if you count Saw's U-Wing that only appeared in two episodes of Star Wars: Rebels. The list is as follows.

Auzituck Gunship
Attack Shuttle
Sheathipede
VCX-100
Saw's U-Wing
TIE Advanced Prototype
Lancer Class Pursuit Craft
Gauntlet Class Starfighter

And this is not taking into account how many things it added for Armada, Imperial Assault, and other media. Clearly these shows are quite the rich source of information and stuff to play with.

So it is very much on topic.

I really think it is artistic licence. The original Poster for Star Wars had x-wings showing what looked like a central. But, it might even be where Poe gets that booster from in The Last Jedi.

No, just, no. The last thing they need to add is a ridiculous, incompetent, over the top villain. They've been trending that way too much already.

At least they've yet to really do it, though. There is that at least.

As am emissary from the Krayt thread, I must thank you for aiding our journey to the top

It's perfect. We've already got space whales and Trioculus has the glove of Darth Vader for Kylo to take from him.
