Somewhat-OT: That new "Rebels" TV series is looking so AWFUL it pains me to think we'll be getting ships from it

By xanderf, in X-Wing

Rebels, like Clone Wars, is a show for kids. It's going to contain G-Rated violence and sophistication. And.... it will be DRIPPING with morality lessons. This is a cartoon show, by Disney, that is specifically targeted at young kids. I still don't understand why there are adults who are comparing it to the original trilogy (which was aimed more at young adults).

I think that's probably my problem. If it was one of those 'for kids but with a morality tale' element, I'd be game with that.

From the preview clips, teasers, and interviews we've been getting to date, though - it sounds like they don't have any plans to do so.

They are just going for 'pure blasty-boomy mindless entertainment', which is disappointing, as it's an epic missed opportunity to do...well, anything else.

I think you guys are not getting the OP's point.

its not that the troopers are incompetent, they are keystone cop incompetent in these shorts.

I get they are making a cartoon, but making it comically entertaining is just over the top.

that being said, it is showing on a Disney station so it will not reach the depths clone wars did. some clone wars episodes were pretty dark and strong content for the audience of this show.

I knew Disney was going to mickey mouse this **** eventually, but I see it as getting the kids interested in star wars young, then graduating into the more serious elements of the universe.

I will try to watch this show, but will hold my final verdict until after I see it.

I am hoping that these are just goofy shorts giving us background and a snap shot of who these new characters are.

Stormtroopers are as incompetent as I remember from the D6 days, it would take more than 20 to give 4 PC's a hard time

TIE fighters on the other hand...

I also have to agree with xanderf on this point,

Disney kids shows do not teach kids valuable lessons.

in the kids shows, the kids are always right, the parents, teachers and other authority figures are idiots or over the top intolerant of thuggish and bad behavior. what is this teaching our kids?

that they shouldn't listen to or respect any adults, that's what.

then take into account the foolish shenanigans the kids in all the shows get away with, most of the things are crimes. breaking and entering, stealing, destruction of property, the list goes on and on. and the kids usually have no punishment because they mean well? or the adults were to stuped to listen to the kids who are always right so they had to?

we are not helping our kids with these kinds of show.

then we look around and ask why do kids have so little respect these days, this is not the only reason, but parents who let their kids watch these shows as a baby sitter compound this.

Disney cartoons are to kids what reality TV is to adults........its making us a society of morons. ever see the movie idiocracy?

its coming.....

One of these days they'll realise that they don't need to hamhandedly cram Jedi into every nook and orifice of SW media.

idiocracy?

No.

I think The Inquisitor and Kanan are cool. Ezra's force sensitivity is the only issue I have with Rebels.

But yes, I agree wholeheartedly that we really do not need Jedi in everything.

I feel so outside of the target audience, despite being a Star Wars fan. Probably shouldn't bother critiquing a show meant for little kids.

I must have had a more hardcore GM than you did *L*

Umm, isn't Star Wars essentially mindless fun? Let's be honest, the OT is rather simple in terms of plot and "message".

That said, Dave Filoni (Clone Wars) and Greg Wiseman (Gargoyles, another Disney cartoon) are behind this show. Let's see the show get a season out before denunciations of it's quality and value come out. Sure, they've said they will not be going as dark as Clone Wars, and that is kind of a good thing. The OT is hardly "dark", especially as dark as the Clone Wars got.

So sit back, and try to enjoy the adventure.

I have to agree, the short feels, not very cool. Though I love the Empire so, I didn't imagine I'd like it. But then, it is what it is. So different strokes and all that.

I'm glad (or at least hoping) that most of you aren't lawyers.

Declaring something to be good or bad, from a few promotional clips that may, or may not, even be in the actual show and passing final judgement on it's worth/morality/continuity/whatever seems a bit... over-reacting.

Oh wait, it's the FFG forum, where over-reacting to a situation with insufficient data is expected.

Carry on.

And for everyone who actually committed themselves to all of the Clone Wars, I'm sure they'll all attest that the 1st season was the worst. So don't give up on Rebels, even if they miss a couple times while they get their bearings.

The 1st episode of Rebels, though, already looks better than the Clone Wars.

Anyone go to ComicCon and see the whole preview?

Everything about Rebels looks cool to me. Personally think this may turn out to be better than ep7.

The Inquisitors variant Tie his awesome as is the ghost.

Also I'm a gnarly old SW fan who's happy to see entertaining new elements to the whole SW universe.

What, the Ghost? That thing is going to be the E-Wing of the YT series.

Which is perfectly fine. People will be like, "Buh, the new kid on the block is bigger and better? Whatever..."

'Cept that the VCX-100 is very clearly more modern and bigger than The Falcon. Big enough that it has its very own shuttle that his oh so horribly but delightfully toyetic.

A fully equipped VCX-100- likely The Ghost piloted by Hera in XWMG with as much crap you can put on it being in play, might be essentially the only ship on your field.

And it'd be alright.

And for everyone who actually committed themselves to all of the Clone Wars, I'm sure they'll all attest that the 1st season was the worst.

Actually, I really liked 1st season, it was 4th season I thought was terrible. Whole first half of the season was almost unwatchable. I can't understand what happened, the rest of the series was great, but that half season went so far off the rails.

Personally I can see where OP is coming from. Every character shat out ever now seems to be about nothing but smarming quips and cocky attitudes poorly disguised as wit. Everyone is now Nathan Drake.

How much you like or dislike the characters from a show doesn't affect how the ships will play in a miniatures game. Same reason why people who cite Jar Jar as being a reason for not to entertain the idea of doing a clone war version is stupid. Jar Jar never flew any of the smeggin' ships!

Edit: And as a side bonus, if they released him as a crew card, then you'd be able to kill him. It's win win!

Lucas considered the Clone Wars to be a PG13 show.

This one is more targeted at kids.

If we get ships from this show and it leads to 12 year olds showing up with their ghost builds I would be ecstatic.

My boy is nearly 16 and he is the only young dude in our group.

Looks more like the intro to a Jak&Daxter game than it does Star Wars, both in style and tone. Not for me, but I guess I can tolerate its existence.

A super cool gang of rag tag awesome heroes fight baddies from their spaceship. Who thinks that's bad?

People who don't like Firefly, apparently.

Don't you dare connecting any of THAT to Firefly. Firefly has a script.

This is just...GAH...*terrrible*

...I mean, the mind-boggling level of incompetence of the stormtroopers is just beyond words. And nearly worse is the comically detached attitude of the main character - he's being shot at and has all the emotional involvement in his own LIFE as someone playing a video game...

It's really...grating.

1) It's a show for children, made by DISNEY.

2) Have you ever been shot at? When my cousin came back from Iraq he talked about how surreal it was to be pinned down behind a wall with someone and be in the middle of an argument about some random crap like how long a walrus ***** is while bullets were whizzing all around, and how detached they were. It's probably a coping mechanism.

3) It's looking better than the prequels and both previous tv shows, so I'll give it a chance. *shrugs*

It looks like, and is, a kids show. It doesn't interest me in the same way that every other kid show does not interest me. If I had kids, I might enjoy watching this with them.

Good for what it is, but probably not interesting to most older people except for the subset that likes watching kids cartoons. (which I'm guessing is overrepresented among gamers). I have a hard time feeling disappointed, it's exactly what I expected and I don't think it ever pretended to be otherwise.

He's dispatching Storm Troopers faster than Mace Windu can take out B1 battle droids!

Hold on there, have you ever seen this?

And those are B2 Battle Droids

Edit: on a side note, how do you embed bloody youtube videos here?
