What theme to come next from FFG in the LCG format?

By radioboyeric, in Living Card Games

I'm gonna guess Legend of the Five Rings. :D

I tought you where kidding...

Now I have seen the news section. Well that just blew my mind.

I wonder if they will reboot the setting or continue on with the storyline...

There better still be a Spider Clan!

Robin,

there are a few hints on the timeline in the article, when they mention the Colonies. At least, something should be preserved. This said, I literally can't wait. Especially because it's FFG, so I sense we'll hopefully see much more of this setting coming in the future (boardgames, minis, RPGs, and so on)

Best news in a very long time :)

I must admit I only skimmed trough the article. It's hard to read when you are bouncing up and down with exitedness.

The only thing that came close to calming me down was seeing the expected release date (hoorah!) of 2017 (haroo.)

For me best news is non FFG related: War of light for dicemasters and a new mage wars without that a board.

Can I ask what's your favorite clan?

Yup, I get what you're saying, my husband is still doing some sort of happiness tribal dance on the ceiling. Neighbors will probably call an exorcist in a few minutes if he doesn't stop, lol

As for my fave clan... I love many, but if I had to pick one, then it's Lion. What about you?

Great news for the IP and for FFG and yes this is an easy buy in just on the announcement. I was a fan of the RPG nut never got into the CCG. I look forward to a new jump in point with the LCG and hope we get an RPG and board games as well.

And now the trolling question: does L5R arriving in 2017 mean that there won't be any new LCG in 2016?

Spider Clan... Ever since they got great clan status after the destroyer war. and before that Mantis. (I have a soft spot for former minor clans ;) and before that...uh that's way back in the 90s...Unicorn.

But i'm Spider all the way now.

I actually consider it a bit of a mixed blessing: I was planning to get into 2nd edition of a game of thrones LCG (while keeping up with CoC, Netrunner and 40k conquest) I've only got so much money FFG! :)

Maybe next year they'll anounce a Vampire TES or mechwarrior LCG (and then the 90's will truly be back)

Has idea : He-Man LCG ftw, yeah baby!

Robin,

one year ago Chris said FFG dropped the VTES project. Here you have his post on BGG closing the question.

As for the MechWarrior... don't know, it'll be the third Sci-Fi themed LCG, sounds a little bit risky (and I don't see Netrunner or Conquest being shut down in any immediate future)

But I see your struggle about an evergrowing collection. LCGs are probably the type of games I love the most, so... :D

C'mon Alex, we already have Mr. Skeletor on BGG! Come and join the Emerald madness that will be L5R :D

I second that (re: love for the minor clans). Anyhoo, what actually has always fascinated me through time is the bigger fresco of the game. You actually had the feeling of an entire amazing new world growing in your hands, with stories of honor and deceit, war and peace. It's... fantastic. And new, basically because they invented a new setting and pushed it to a cult status, meaning that the contents were of excellence

And now the trolling question: does L5R arriving in 2017 mean that there won't be any new LCG in 2016?

I would guess--probably yes. Based on comments made be Christian Petersen at Gen Con, I'd also expect that this will be the completion of their LCG line until something is retired.

I hope FFG can make a good L5R LCG. I have to say in the past I was satisfied with how they did the Call of Cthulhu game, but they had it that even before they changed it to the LCG format. But Netrunner which I played a lot back when it was a CCG, never could get me to try the LCG version (didn't like the changes I heard that were made). But I am very excited for L5R, and even though I play that game for a long time, I don't mind if they would change it in many ways, since the game always had many little issues that Alderac never could get right, since they had to carry over too many sacred cows from edition to edition. So, a reboot could be the best thing happen to L5R!

Aye, it has actually no sense cannibalizing their own audiences...

They already are. That's part of the problem so stopping here is a good idea

Probably also part of the reason they're going to let things lie for a couple of years, let the market settle. Also I'm sure AEG wants to give their edition of the game time in the sun for the last expansion cycle.

Yup. Also wondering if the two-year gap implies some of the existing LCG lines reaches an end

Hope not, always seems to be my favourites/investments discussed for the chop..

Hey, investments are something you do for the future ;) I don't see myself stop playing any of the games I collect for the next half century (or so)

Agreed, which is another reason I go for things with solo variants. Its just a shame that once something is discontinued that it usually seems just a matter of time before chatter on the forums dries up. The "current" stuff just seems to have a stronger draw (no pun intended) and obviously also better for shops/stores to run events hoping for sales.

But yes, I dont sell on games, always get a full set to play in future years. Mostly it has been Games Workshop tabletop or book rpgs but this year my discovery of LCG has gone ballistic!!!

So another LCG with a Solo option will not come - I had hoped for it.

So another will only come, the LotR will discontinued.... Not good.

I would not mind a couple more AEG properties, like 7th Sea, but in particular Warlord. Warlod(early) was the 2nd most fun game I ever played. This one TRULY feels like it would excel in a LCG model.

But yea, it is fantasy, so probably not for a while. 7Th Sea is different enough to warrant one though.

Totally bummed about this. I really wanted another coop LCG (though I knew the chances are slim to none for two coop LCGs coexisting). But as a former MtG player, I'm happy for a CCG community (legend of the five rings, in this case) getting its game revitalized in this superior format.

There are things I thought were really elegant about Warlord, but I'm not sure I could get past all the rolling. It would have to be redesigned to exclude that in order to get my dollars. It's not too difficult to incorporate randomization into the cards themselves though, and that's just the most obvious solution.

The less said about 7th Sea, the better. I've pretty much always felt that game was a train wreck. Live and let live, and all that but I'd rather FFG put their efforts toward games that might interest me.

Setting could be good for a coop game, though, for people looking for that.
