Sorastro's Painting

This is like my 17th or 18th mini ever painted, so I'm still very much a novice, and my first time at OSL... Used your Vader vid for inspiration (thanks btw!), and I think I finally 'get' the glaze principle now having successfully done it with medium vs when I mixed water and thought about doing it. Haven't finished the base and I'm going to try to tidy up some of the helmet lines not glazed.

Absolutely stunning work Recon - especially if it's just your 17th or 18th mini! False modesty aside - I'm never prouder than when I see a relatively new painter producing such fantastic results after watching one of my videos (especially with a scary character like Vader!) :)

@Sorastro I have a question if you care to answer. I'm having a heck of a time mounting my miniatures properly while painting. I don't want to pin them for painting (drilled through too many legs) and I don't like to put them on the base until I've washed them and highlighted the feet. I'm trying to find a good method of mounting them to a bottle cap or whatever until I'm ready to transfer them.
DO you or anyone else have tips that don't involve pinning?

Hi Zrob! All I can suggest is that you either try sticking them down onto some putty of some kind (poster putty etc) - although I'm guessing you've probably tried that already! Otherwise I think I'd agree with Aniron's suggestion that you simply super glue the mini down (onto a spare base or whatever) and remove it once you're done. Sorry - that's all I got! :)

Truthfully, I've painted some squadrons for Armada, but I don't consider them "mini's". All the ones I've painted for Legion have been my first 28mm miniatures thus I consider them my first real foray into the hobby. Ships and people/figures are just different in my mind.

To Vader, I've watched hours and hours of vids, so I had some of the concepts down, but I've been light on the practice. I had to watch your vid a few times (with pauses while I attempted to replicate). Certainly ambitions to go after him early in my Legion set, but after muffing the storm troopers (did a lot of things backwards), I thought why not, and gave him a go. Still a lot of learning, but painting more mini's is part of learning and I just need to get some consistent brush time in. .... maybe some of the better brushes like the Winsors or some other Kolinsky brushes will help with some of my lines and details as well.

Thanks for the kind words.

Just to be clear (for anyone else who weighs in) I'm not asking about what to put them on while painting, I have my own preferred platforms and reasons for not using the bases.

This is about getting them stuck and stable and removing them without damage.

Not telling you what to do or not to do, just providing the caveat that I myself don't use the method I suggested.

Stick tac works well for me. I think i've used the same ball now for a couple of years.

Superglue, then snapping them off comes to mind. Put them in the freezer a few minutes beforehand if you are worried about them not snapping off cleanly.

Do you use any particular type of super glue?

I use LockTite gel or gorilla glue.

Most of the brands are very similar if not identical (barring the gel type, or.the.ones that have some filler added).

I use brush-on Loctite.

Sorastro, you're gonna be at Star Wars Celebration officially? Now I wish I was in Chicago.

Will the panel and/or tutorials be available on YouTube or elsewhere afterwards, for those of use who aren't going?

On behalf of an entire Legion...

Would you mind picking up an extra copy of the celebration Vader sculpt for each of us?

Thanks Sorastro - you're the best :)

Krennic! Pathfinders! Death Troopers! Veterans! Vehicles! Tauntauns!

Can we just send Sorastro to a weekend vacation on Kamino and get five of him back? 🙂

The Jim Butcher plan never works. What do we do with them afterwords?

Just wondering, How do you get such fine details on such small minis?

Ya know what, scratch all previous thoughts. We need those Sorastro clones STAT.

Clone wars have come to Legion

Sorastro, would you ever consider having someone do the painting in some of your videos to expedite the process?

We're not getting the clones&droids until autumn. Krennic, Jyn, deathtroopers and pathfinders are out now.

Oh, and the Chewie&Wookie warriors video is finally up!

Sorastro, I tried to follow your boba fett tutorial and while it’s not as good as yours, I am pretty proud of it! My scout troopers are probably the best zenithal highlights I have gotten so far too!

See you at Star Wars celebration!
