Shield of Humanity

By Arbitrator, in Only War

Yes status updated to on the way to stores. I preordered a copy, so hopefully it will get here to Canada quicker than if I waited for a store to order it. So it should be in most US stores next week. Then it ships immediately on friday at the latest, so it will be here in about two weeks. So 23rd ish is what I'm estimating for delivery at the absolute latest.

I preordered mine on amazon as well, can't wait :)

If as it says it is being printed in Minnesota, I have an even longer wait for it to make it across the pond to the UK...

But hey, at least it is one step closer :)

May I ask in advance anybody lucky to pick it up as soon as it hits to tell us, what new 1/ Regiment Options 2/ Regiments 3/ Specializations 4/ Any other cool stuff, does it contains? Pretty please :)

I just want to know if its on store shelves in the states. So I can know when to expect my order to be shipped.

Ooooo sounds so fun. Any new weapons at all?

Several new weapons, including a Ratling sniper rifle, an Ogryn autocannon, integrated weapons (for the Crimson Guard) and some Ecclesiarchy flame and chain (chainaxe) stuff. New vehicles too.

Nothing in this book that reflects the 'new' Ogryn of the Astra Militarum. These are still old-school Ogryn that fear the dark.

Super-Heavy Armoured Regiment?! Like, we start with a Baneblade and work up from there?! That's got to be fun! :D

And how does the Snipers doctrine differ from sharpshooters, if I may ask? (My copy is ordered, but being in Europe, it takes a while...)

I would assume distance and gear. Snipers in real life work in a two man team at extreme ranges. Typically the best of the best get additional training because firing rounds at ush distances requires a lot of calculations.

Sharpshooters would be akin to a squad with long ranged weapons that skirmishes around an enemy line harassing them. While not as long distance and percise as a sniper unit they can cause some serious havoc with their harassment of other troops who are forced to enguage them.

Typically there are no sharpshooter groups in real life though because modern warfare has evolved. Sharpshooters would be used in line battles. Either on the sides or in front to harass the shorter range rifles the majority of infantry would be using. Sharpshooters had to travel light and fast to keep ahead of an enemy. The closest thing to a sharpshooter is the designated marksman role in a squad and it isn't very close of an aproximation.

However due to the slow trench warfare and the unusual battlefields in 40k I could see Sharpshooters having some relevancy depending on battlefield, enemy type, and terrain. Other than their specialized roles associated with being sharpshooters the squad would perform most ordinary IG missions if possible and act like an ordinary squad with additional duties that make use of their specalizaied training.

Snipers are much more precise and have a very narrow job. Destruction of high value targets. Anything from light vehicles, to critical supplies, or key personel. Or anything deemed high value they have a longed ranged rifle to destroy.

Edit

Any new enemy vehicles to use our new vehicles on?

Edited by Gamgee

I didn't see any xenos or Severan-specific vehicles. I'm assuming that many of the IG vehicles are in use by the SD though.

Thanks for the answer, Gamgee, but I suppose I should've been clearer: How do they differ in this game ?
And I don't need precise stats, but I know that Sharpshooters gives an aptitude good for shooting, a talent to reduce penalties to called shots and allows you to buy extra items for your regiment.

What does snipers do? Start you out with camo gear and sniper rifles?

AFB, but you get either sniper rifles or long Las. I don't recall camo gear, but I'm not positive it wasn't in there.

I assumed that all of their combat vehicles are of imperial origin.

There is also another neecessary assumption: that AM are neutral in war against Severans and produce weapons for both sides of conflict. If they won't who will then?

Thank you HappyDaze! Care to list the new Support Specialties please? :) Also are there any interesting new fluff tidbits?

I am tad dissapointed that the delay wasnt justified by the application of new Astra Militarium stuff, but still it looks **** cool. Black horse for me are the Regimental Drawbacks, I see possibilities for some pretty cool regiments, or to mess with players a lot, let them start as conscripts.

AFB (have to work), but Admech gets a few, Ogryn get Bone'ead, some melee bruiser, and a heavy gunnner. Rstlings get fixer, a sharpshooter (even more than usual) and a scout type. Ecclesiarchy gets a melee priest, a flame priest, a smart priest, and (IIRC) one more.

So this leaves a book for the Schola Progenum Types then.... interesting. :) Still sounds like my group is going to have tons to mess around with.

Also IRL Snipers get training in fieldcraft and other skills deemed necessary for operaiton far behind enemy lines or in dangerous areas. A designated marksmen is simply a member of his squad and is expected to act as necessary and bring down accurate precise fire where needed and when ordered. DM's don't get advaned training. DM's are assigned on a squad level. Where as a Sniper is typically attatched at a higher level like a batallion.

What sort of vehicles made it in this time?

Did we get a Valk?

Thanks HappyDaze!

No flyers. A few new LRuss variants. One new superheavy tank. The manticore, tauros (and a bigger one with a turret and some HK missiles), a mortar carrier, salamander. Those are the main ones.

That would be Tauros Venator. I feel so many Generation Kill-ish campaigns incoming. All around, the book sounds like a no-brainer purchase (sorry Faith&Coint a pretty much everything in Deathwatch from Honour the Chapter).

Yes, absolutely sounds like great value!

The mortar carrier sounds like something fitting for the Severan Dominate: Simple and old-fashioned, but easier to produce than missiles.

And the Flame-Priest sounds fiery :D

Heya HappyDaze, can you let us know what new vehicles we're looking at? That was my big draw for this book. Thanks for the preview on the regimental and weapons details. Much appreciated.

Ty HappyDaze for the news! ^_^
