Any idea for an alternative to painting the bases red for elite models?

Not exactly what you are looking for but this is what I do.

I paint the rings of the bases three different colors (Red Green and Blue), then sleeve my deployment cards first with FFG appropriate sized sleeve, then with an uppder deck sleeve that fits around it. If you zoom in on the imperial figures in the picture above it may give you an idea of my plan.

Actually I'm looking for some kind of an elegant 'removable' solution, without glue or paint on the bases.

You could use magnets and poker chips.

My General Weiss is calling for a paint job after work sometime this week using the AT-ST and Imperial Officer tutorials as the basis. The Royal Guard Champion also looks manageable by using the Royal Guard and Darth Vader tutorials as the reference.

Other than that I'm waiting for the rest of the tutorial videos. I almost hope that Gaarkhan is done next so I know how to do Chewie as well. That said it's the Nexu and Trandoshans that I think will be the most interesting to paint.

Admiring the minis from the expansion pack and having a look at their cards I noticed something slightly strange. General Weiss is shown on his deployment card wearing dungaree style overalls where on the mini he had a chest plate. The right sided armament of his AT-ST is also different from the deployment card art.

Luckily I've found a nice reference photo for his different styled uniform. I guess you can just paint it in a similar fashion to the Imperial Officers but using only the green glaze followed by some 'Ardcoat.

I couldn't keep waiting for the newest episodes and after having had the advice of Sorrastro and the introduction to figure painting (had never done anything like this beforehand) I thought it was time to just look up some examples on the internet and go at it alone.
Today I started and finished these 2 guys in about 3 hours, must say I'm pretty satisfied with the results. I will continue doing the rest of the figures though I will also keep track of Sorrastro's paints (and probably kick myself in the head for not waiting ).

Gideon looks outstanding, Nofunatall. And I really like the color choices (although I might have tried for a slightly less glossy finish on the boots).

Gaarkhan looks a little bit odd, with the glossy black leather. And is that woad on his face?

In any event, they both look better than my (still unpainted) miniatures.

It's warpaint , and I figured Gaarkhan to be a bit of a leatherdaddy...

Well I would have never started if it wasn't for your video's, I've really caught the painting bug now .

You're braver than me Nofunatall! I'm only going to risk General Weiss and the Royal Guard Champion without Sorastros videos. Which I can hopeful fit in at the weekend, providing I don't have to pop into the lab for too long.

I know if I chose to paint anything else, say the Nexu, then 30 minutes after finishing Sorastro would release a video on how I should have done it.

My biggest problem is that I took a hiatus from wargaming and model painting (**** you, World of Warcraft!!!) for over 7 years, and have only recently returned to painting with Imperial Assault. Even after 7 years, my methods of painting have not changed and are very ADHD driven, meaning that I am constantly painting little bits on all my models at the same time (usually based on which colors I have put on my palate).

In the case of warhammer, I was painting orcs/orks, and other than green skin, I could pretty much do whatever I wanted to do, and since I lack the ability to visualize a completed model until it is actually complete, this gave my models a very gritty, grimy, cobbled-together look and feel that was perfect for orcs/orks.

But now, there a many units in Imperial Assault where I have reference material to look at and to give me the conceptualization of what "complete" looks like. One the one hand, it feels stifling to "color by number", but on the other hand, it is refreshing to see something come to life as I am painting it. But because it is Star Wars, I really want my models to look like they belong in the universe and too much deviation on "core" units bothers me. So, I deviate on certain things, like the nexu, and trandoshans, but stay true to the source materials on things like stormtroopers and rebel troopers.

While I would love to show off some of my work, none if it is done to a quality with which I would consider "complete / ready for varnish".

One thing I have learned is this: I'm old now! Seeing the details is much harder now than it was before! To combat this, I purchased a desk lamp and got a 1100 lumen, LED Daylight 5000K bulb (lasts 20 years and produces almost no heat!!!), along with a large 2x magnification lens on its own stand so I have both the right light and the ability to see what I am working on. It has been a huge help!

That said, it is awesome to see so many people out there painting these models! And it's awesome to have Sorastro here to guide us when we want/need it, and to him and the rest of the community here to lend encouragement when all we need is a nudge.

Hopefully my stuff will be done before Twin Shadows comes out and I can show off my stuffs.

Hi Muz - I'm aiming to get it finished this week but wouldn't like to make any firm promises!

I've made extra work for myself in the way that I've approached the next episode, but hopefully it's got a range of ideas in it that you'll enjoy and will make it worth waiting for. I think it will require some fresh musical themes too which will also add to the production time.

I really do appreciate everyone's patience. It's quite scary producing these videos in a way, especially as my audience is now rather large! I do need to ensure that I'm giving the best instruction I can which means trying out lots of paint/wash combinations, teaching myself how to create different effects and practicing them - and that's all before I actually begin filming! But the feedback and encouragement from you lot makes it all worth while and is the main reason the series exists.

Excellent! I painted 90 % of General Weiss today after work. I would have finished it but had friends round to play our Imperial Assault campaign.

I'll post the results of this painting tomorrow as it uses what I learnt from your AT-ST and Imperial Officer videos as reference.

Had a great time applying the rust effect on the AT-ST. My Longbeard Grey was a little too dry and I applied too much but I was able to tone it down a bit with some thinned Celestra Grey. That Stirland Mud stuff is awesome!

So here is General Weiss done as per your AT-ST tutorial. For Weiss himself I just used the Celestra grey for the uniform and Mechanicus Standard Grey for the armour and helmet. Abandon Black for the goggles and binoculars then a wash with Nuln Oil.

You'll also see I invested in a cheap hobby lamp. No more poor lighting conditions! I have a paint pallet on route as well.

I assume we are looking at one of the two scum squads? Both of them look really interesting to paint. I'm looking forward to the Nexu and their striped fur as well as the Trandoshans with their reptile skin.
