To each their own I guess. I'm crazy pumped for this show. I think it really has that New Hope feel. Yes, some stuff is going to be a bit silly because it is a cartoon. The Clone Wars had plenty of Jar Jar and droid sillyness too. Don't forget that.

People here seem to be forgetting an entire movie (Empire Strikes Back) where the stormtroopers kick rebel ass the entire time. Who won at Hoth? Who won in Besbin? Who got their asses frozen in carbonite or dragged off as prisoners until they had to be saved by one of the last freaking Jedi in the galaxy?

Also, ask the residents of Alderaan if the Empire is run by incompetent boobs.

If anything, the biggest specific influence on the Rebels show is that of Ralph McQuarrie, the main artist who designed most of the look of the original Star Wars.

They're taking very specific steps to recreate McQuarrie's style and the feel of his illustrations.

They overwhelmed the defenses on Hoth, which they should of done. I mean they only outnumbered the Rebels what, 20-1? Even then they were unable to do more then drive the RA off of Hoth... Due mostly to the incompetence of Admiral Ozzel. They did no real lasting damage to the RA.

Bespin wasn't even part of the RA, they again overwhelmed the station with numbers.

The market those shows are geared towards is not the same that a Star Wars movie or TV show would be, so yes there's a market for movies and TV shows based on the bad guys. But I don't believe there is one for a Star Wars TV show. Revenge of the Sith was 5th out of 6 movies for sales.

Also as a % of movies, TV shows and stories in other media, the ones about the bad guys is a pretty small %. Because most people want the good guys to win, even if they do appreciate seeing something about the bad guys from time to time.

Myself I've read some of the Sith novels, and I really liked Thrawn, so I wouldn't be adverse to something about the Empire. But that doesn't mean it would make it in the mainstream.

You can also ask the captain of the Tantive that get captured in the early moments of Ep IV how much the Empire sucks at it's job. How about all the people who were killed defending it? How is Gold squad doing these days? All of those ground troops on Hoth just walked away? Right.

Never said or even hinted at such a thing. It is the most sound tactical choice. Because then the quality of any one unit doesn't matter.

It's the same in X-Wing, a Tie Fighter is quite a bit inferior to a X-Wing, but because it's cheaper it can be.

Stormtroopers were feared, because they had the might of the Empire behind them, individually they were pretty inept. Stormtroopers followed the same concept that Ties do. Quantity is a form of Quality, they were effective because there were so many of them, not because they were all that good themselves.

Edit: Lets be completely clear here... The Stormtroopers and the Empire were the bad guys and as such they were going to lose no matter what. It was IMO a mistake on GL's part to talk up the "elite strormtrooper" and have them look like bumbling idiots for so much of the movie. Because they kinda had to look that way, it's not like they could actually win, or shoot one of the heroes... No more so then a red shirt is going to survive a trip to the planet in Star Trek.

SWG, in the first year, rebels outnumbered the empire for quite a bit. And it that game, it actually mattered ;P

No it wasn't. It may of seemed that way, but it wasn't. They did enough checking on active characters to show that not every server favored the Sith, and the balance wasn't nearly as bad as some people claimed.

No, and MMO stats the only thing that had provided is that PvE oriented players tend to levitate towards the good races (by 5-10%) and PvP players tend to levitate towards the evil side (5-10% too).

you start in the academy with a unit of rag tag individuals from the same planet, some could have been rivals in school and stuff like that.

they see the empire as the savior to the galaxy and can not understand why the rebels would want to fight them.

they have ordinary families and are just doing their jobs. bringing aid to planets that have suffered natural disasters and rescuing ships in deep space.

fighting off pirates and thwarting smugglers.

yes the empire was ruled by an evil individual, other than the way he took power and his treatment of non-humans, his goal was to organize and make the empire thrive. the common imperial citizen had no idea how the emperor came to rule.

You have to remember that if you include EU, the stormtroopers are elite.

The main force of the empire is 'the army' and they wear grey uniforms, not blaster armour. They have psychotic assault units that are more lucky than elite but the stormtroopers are put on ships by the emperor as an elite (and very loyal) personal force, the elite of this elite are his royal guard.

If its 'film or nothing' then Kenobi says 'only imperial stormtroopers are this precise', which implies they are very well trained.

And that's generally how Storm Troopers have been portrayed in most RPGs - 'elite troops', so that you need to have uniformed (but not armored) 'security officer' NPCs and the like for players to interact with as low-level opponents easy to get around/defeat.

That's probably how Storm Troopers are going to be presented in FFG's upcoming "Imperial Assault" game, too..

...except, nope, now we've got a series of "new canon" that tells us Storm Troopers only hit when rolling '0' on 1d6...

The series will be establishing a new set of standards to the capabilities of ships, units, and personal based on a 'kiddie'-level of sophistication (good guys always good/always win - bad guys all incompetent and have weak equipment), but it becomes canon by merely being in the series.

I had never been that much into the EU than what games had offered to me. And i always had the impression that stormtroopers were just meatbags. Watching imperial troopers missing their shots is even a recurrent joke on star wars conversations.
