PbP Recruitment: The High Republic - Artifacts Unbound

By Sincereagape, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny Beginner Game

@Xcapobl - A lot of the reasoning behind having the force users not start off with light-sabers has to do with my in person table top group. We meet once a month. The started off with Ilium crystal lightsabers and because we meet only once a month for 3-4 hour sessions it has been difficult to run their crystal quest. The second reason is I was flipping through Nexus of Power sourcebook (specifically the Vergence) section, and thought "Wow. It would be a great modular encounter to run!"

But, that should not apply to you guys. I can wait until our tabletop group gets there. It does make sense for the Jedi in this setting to begin with their light sabers, especially those with 215 earned exp. We can also do above Vergence Modular Encounter during the campaign but have it not be centered around LS crystals.

SO..

If you guys so desire and choose. Force Users/Jedi may begin the game with a lightsaber using the Endless Vigil LS creation rules. Feel free to select an official crystal from the sourcebooks with pre-approval from GM. IE: Krayt Pearl and the Nightsister Crystal are off limits. Mechanics and Knowledge Lore (Taken from GM Kit, FaD) will be used for crafting LS hilts. Those who choose a LS begin with 2,250 base starting credits (300 much be spent on materials for the LS hilt). This would also allow the non-force users to not be on hiatus during the LS crystal portion of the campaign.

Players may also choose an exotic plasma weapon instead of a LS with 2,250 base starting credits.

@April Yes, even though HK-47 is a personal favorite, I highly discourage "Evil" characters. Now a droid with a natural tendencies to commit a crime here and there, but is able to reel it in with a support group, then sure. Or a droid prone to take 'moral shortcuts' in order to get the job done, when going up against a brick wall, that is okay as well.

Keep in mind, the droid will be flying with altruistic characters as @Xcapobl and @P-47 Thunderbolt mentioned. They also should have a reason to be working with the Jedi in peacekeeping the galaxy, and eventually preventing the nemesis of the story from collecting Jedi and Sith artifacts.

The more I attempt to flesh out the High Republic era (Because it is new to us), the more "It is a golden age where there is much more peace and calm in the galaxy." along with "The threat and tension comes from the Republic's borders. Because the Republic does not extend from one side to the other." keep popping into my mind.

I imagine that the High Republic era is the pinnacle of the stability of Republic. The Senate lacks corruption, the Core Worlds & Mid Rims are at peace and stable. Organized crime syndicates and mega corporations like the Black Sun and Czerka have been dealt with by the Jedi.

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round were very proactive in dealing with threats the Camelot. Sheriffs in the wild were were men of action.

The threat level maybe low and you guys might be able to "walk" through everything, however there is a GIANT surprise at the end. :).

So yes, I am asking for a more light side or grey characters in this campaign.

That being said, for the pilot - I would be more than happy to open up the Smuggler Career - Scoundrel and Pilot specializations for the droid (No charmer, thief, gambler). Gunslinger is a maybe if it fits the character.

Obviously a work in progress, but since lightsabers are in play, I decided to go with an aggressive negotiator, an alliterative arkanian arbiter archaeologist.

@Edgehawk :

I've been toying with the idea of an arkanian Jedi. Would you be interested in them being friends or related to each other (and/or rivals)?

@Sincereagape :

My lightsabre crystal of choice is a Lorrdian Gemstone (FaD p. 199).

Future plans for the lightsabre include a Cyclic Crystal Array (Keeping the Peace p. 53). If that comes to fruition, then I'd be interested in a Christophsis crystal (Collapse of the Republic p. 62) as the second crystal. But like I said, those are just future plans/dreams! :)

Shien is definitely my character's goal, but she's getting there via Padawan and Knight first. (So much good stuff there which I want to get first! Also, I hope to get Peerless Interception eventually.

My character will probably focus on Mechanics.

@MrTInce :

Both look good to me each in their own way. :)

I might have a slight preference for Fog - particularly after seeing how a fully trained Healer/Doctor can keep the party going.

Sure! Friends, relatives, rivals... the write-ups are a clean slate, at this point. We can coordinate once the characters are closer to completion.

@Sincereagape Would you approve my character taking a free rank in Xenology, as opposed to medicine, as the species bonus? I believe it would be appropriate, and more fitting for the character I’m building (Also, I think the party has a Healer, and it looks like another Arkanian). I know you expressed an interest in avoiding overlap, so I thought I’d ask.

Just in case there was any question, I'll state that my character is not going for any form of specialised healer/medical doctor. She has enough knowledge for easy first aid situations and can in a pinch do a little bit with the Force, but it's definitely not going to be her forte. :)

Here is my very much WIP character, an arkanian Padawan/Knight/Shien practitioner named Vigdis [surname to be decided]. She might be Astrid's sibling, fraternal twin, or cousin, also depending on how @Edgehawk develops Astrid.

  • Equipment

Does the 1,950 + 300 (hilt construction) credits include the 500 + 1d100 starting credits, or would they be separate?

If Vigdis is okayed ( https://swsheets.com/c/qecjgasnr-vigdis---- ) then I'm ready to do the dice roll(s) for constructing a standard lightsabre hilt with (I hope) a Lorrdian Gemstone crystal.

Once I know what the hilt is like, then I can spend credits on attachments, armour (maybe), and other gear.

@Bellona - The 2,250 bonus credits does NOT include the 500 starting credits at CC. and 1D100. So you may add those to the character.

@Edgehawk - Yes. You may sub Healing for Knowledge (Xenology) for the special species bonus skill

@P-47 Thunderbolt Developed a ship for the team (With modifications). We'll be using that as the team ship.

Dankes. Team is looking good so far.

Thank you for the clarification! :)

One more question, may I craft the lightsabre hilt from scratch as per the rules at the back of Endless Vigil? That would let me save a little money on the hilt (100 cr. in stead of 300 cr., assuming that I don't roll terribly and have to try again).

I rolled a 42, which puts me at 1,492. Any chance I could lobby to round that up to 1,500 and make my OCD happy? ;)

Anyway, finished mine yesterday, and since we're all posting them: Prok Espio

@Bellona Of course.

@P-47 Thunderbolt - LOL. Sure. My wife has OCD, so I understand.

Wrong man Mate I'm @Shlambate you are thinking of @Xcapobl

The curse of identical avatars strikes again!

Crafting Spam, part 1:

1d100 extra starting cash : 1d100 28

Total budget for equipment, etc. = 2,250 + 500 (CC) + 28 (random roll) = 2,778 credits

Re-roll of random starting credits : 1d100 59

Total budget for equipment, etc. = 2,250 + 500 (CC) + 59 (random re-roll) = 2,809 credits

Onward to the spending/crafting!

First attempt to craft a standard lightsabre hilt ...

Craft standard LSa hilt w. Manipulete power : 2eP+1eA+2eF+2eD 1 success, 1 advantage, 3 Dark Side
p-a-a.png p-s-a.png a-s.png f-ds-ds.png f-ds.png d-th.png d-f-th.png

Failure. Six hours. Cost = 100 credits.

Not impressive, not-so-young padawan. Try again, and this time remember to use the Jedi Multi-Tool (Keeping the Peace p. 53) so that there's +1 Advantage!

Buy fully-stocked Jedi Utility Belt (Keeping the Peace p. 52), complete with Jedi Multi-Tool. Cost = 1,000 credits.

Second attempt to craft a standard lightsabre hilt, technically re-forging the first attempt (to save 50 credits as per sidebar in EV p. 85) ...

Craft standard LSa hilt w. Manipulate power + JMT (+1 Adv.) : 2eP+1eA+2eF+2eD 1 failure, 2 advantage, 2 Light Side, 1 Dark Side
p-s.png p-a-a.png a-a.png f-ls-ls.png f-ds.png d-th.png d-f-f.png

Result (using 2 LS pips for +2 Successes, declining to use DS pip, +1 Advantage from JMT): 1 Success, 3 Advantages.

Success. Personalised Design (3 Advantages) = +1 Success on successful LSa combat check when using this weapon, other users add +1 Threat when using this weapon. Six hours. Cost = 50 credits.

Much better, padawan-mine!

Total spent so far: 1,150 cr.

2,809- 1,150 = 1,659 credits remaining .

Edited by Bellona
Forgot to buy the Jedi Utility Belt. Then was allowed to re-roll random credits.

Crafting Spam, part 2:

Total budget now reduced to 1,659 credits.

Let's see how we can spend that ...

Gadget crafting (Special Modifications p. 84):

Vigdis would like to craft her own Tool Kit, in case she need to repair things away from the Dawn Temple and its workshops ...

Gadget craft a Tool Kit w. Manipulate power : 2eP+1eA+2eF+1eD 3 successes, 2 advantage, 3 Light Side
p-a-a.png p-s-s.png a-s-s.png f-ls-ls.png f-ls.png d-f.png

Result (using 3 LS pips for 3 Advantages): 3 Successes, 5 Advantages.

Success. Time reduced from 2 hours to 1 hour (+1 Success; final Success just evaporates for lack of better things to do). Safety Features = +1 Advantage when using Mechanics skill with this kit (3 Advantages). 2x Lightweight = kit's Encumbrance is reduced from 4 to 2 (2x Advantage). Cost = 50 credits.

Excellent! (Creepy villain voice optional.) I might re-visit the gadget crafting if there's cash left over, but Vigdis has other fish to fry right now ...

Lightsabre-related work/purchases:

Find/receive a Lorrdian Gemstone (sapphire) lightsabre crystal attachment, and install it in her standard lightsabre hilt. Cost = "0" credits.

Buy and install a Magnetic Weapon Tether attachment on/in her standard lightsabre hilt. Cost = 250 credits.

Buy a separate Weapon Maintenance Kit for Lightsabres (Savage Spirits p. 49). It's a bit heavier than a Jedi Multi-Tool and gives different bonuses than a JMT, so I'm guessing that they stack. Cost = 450 credits.

Take a deep breath and start modding the Lorrdian sapphire, using every means possible to add bonuses to the roll (Manipulate power, Jedi Multi-Tool, Weapon Maintenance Kit, Vigdis' personal Tool Kit) ... yes, I'm paranoid about mucking up these particular dice rolls ...

Mod Lorrdian for #1 Deflection +1, using many bonuses (see IC OOC post spoiler) : 2eP+1eA+2eF+2eB+1eD 4 successes, 3 advantage, 2 Dark Side
p-s-a.png p-a-a.png a-s-s.png f-ds.png f-ds.png b--.png b-s-a.png d-th.png

Result (declining to use DS pips, +1 Advantage from JMT, +1 Advantage from personal Tool Kit): 4 Successes, 5 Advantages.

Success. The Lorrdian sapphire now gives the Deflection 1 quality to the lightsabre. Cost = 100 credits.

Mod Lorrdian for #2 Deflection +1, using many bonuses (see IC OOC post spoiler) : 2eP+1eA+2eF+2eB+2eD 1 success, 4 advantage, 2 Dark Side
p-s-a.png p-a.png a-a-a.png f-ds.png f-ds.png b-s.png b-a-a.png d-th.png d-f-th.png

Result (declining to use DS pips, +1 Advantage from JMT, +1 Advantage from personal Tool Kit): 1 Success, 6 Advantages.

Success. The Lorrdian sapphire now gives the Deflection 2 quality to the lightsabre (instead of Deflection 1). Cost = 100 credits.

Mod Lorrdian for #1 Defensive +1, using many bonuses (see IC OOC post spoiler) : 2eP+1eA+2eF+2eB+3eD 2 failures, 3 advantage, 2 Light Side, 1 Dark Side
p-a-a.png p--.png a-a-a.png f-ds.png f-ls-ls.png b-a-a.png b--.png d-f-f.png d-th-th.png d-th.png

Result ( using 2 LS pips for +2 Successes, using DS pip for +1 Success and +1 Conflict, +1 Advantage from JMT, +1 Advantage from personal Tool Kit): 1 Success, 5 Advantages.

Success (but at the price of 1 Conflict ). The Lorrdian sapphire now gives the Defensive 2 quality to the lightsabre (instead of its innate Defensive 1). Cost = 100 credits.

I'd been hoping to avoid it, but it looks like Vigdis is going to start the session with 1 Conflict already on her character sheet. :(

Total spent so far: 2,200 cr. and 1 Conflict.

2,809 - 2,200 = 609 credits remaining .

Edited by Bellona
Forgot to include the crafted Tool Kit advantages (not that they made a difference on these particular rolls).

@Sincereagape :

Sorry to do this, but could I possibly get that randomly rolled 28 credits raised to 50 credits, please?

That would allow me to craft the equivalent of a training sabre (stun damage only), which is the only way - short of spending 2,000 credits on a Damping Emitter lightsabre weapon attachment (Endless Vigil p. 51) - to inflict clearly non-lethal damage.

(I need to buy some form of armour, so most of the remaining budget has already gone to that.)

I’ll let you roll one more time and if the roll fails then you can borrow credits from another pc
