THE MANDALORIAN, in a Civilized Age

Again, it should be obvious at this point... this is what the show IS. A few episodes that “move the plot” and a few “random encounter” episodes.

You’re thinking that this show is something it isn’t. It’s the X-Files. It’s Clone Wars. It’s Smallville. It’s The Incredible Hulk. It’s Quantum Leap. It’s Star Trek. It’s not Breaking Bad. It’s not Watchmen. It’s not like a lot of prestige television. Not every episode is going to be connected to the mythology or the plot. It’s only “filler” if you’re expecting the show to be something other than what it obviously wants to be at this point.

It’s not padding... it’s the whole point.

Ironically, I've never actually seen either Breaking Bad nor Watchmen , but am very fond of the other shows you mentioned. That said, your comparison is flawed. Let's look at Trek in its final incarnation, Enterprise , or Smallville later on in the show. (Let's also, for the sake of argument ignore Trek 's best incarnation, DS9 , which went completely serialized by the end of its final season) Both had moved on to season long story arcs from the completely episodic beginnings. They would include quite a bit of filler episodes even into these arcs, but made sure to start the season with the resolution/continuation of the problem of the last season, and then go into filler/adventure of the week.

We haven't gotten that this season. Instead, it's Tremors: Star Wars Edition , and last week's jumble of an episode. Now, if you're happy with a show that has random things occur, and then it cuts to Baby Yoda for an "awww" moment, fine, but it does get a bit dull for me. Also, it's hard to say that's what the show is when the first season was 5/8ths story episodes, and of the remaining 3, at least two helped push the story forward in minor ways. Until we get more, this season is the oddball, not anyone's expectations of a story driven show.

Spelling is hard

I'm loving the show, but am kind of middle of the road on the current trajectory. I enjoyed both episodes. Yes, they're both encounter episodes, but still fun. That being said, I'm really hoping we get to progress the main plot this Friday.

Not long enough, but cool to see the water worlds, creatures and the Other Way

This episode was awesome if you like star wars

But y'all are right, i need more episodes

I know! it seemed really really short! when the credits rolled I thought dang its over already?

Great episode focused on the overall plot. Addressed some questions we have had for along time as well!

all 3 of the episodes this season have pushed the main arc along, the first episode saw him searching for another Mandalorian and being told that Tatooine was the place to go, he goes there and that lead dries up as it is not a real Mandalorian wearing the armour, second episode starts with him finding another person that has news about Mandalorians and following the rumours to them and the journey to that new planet, the third episode is him finding the Mandalorians that he has been searching for all season so far only to find that they are different to him and need his help.

The Plot for the main Arc this season has progressed pretty far considering that it is only 3 episodes in.

10min shorter at least than average. It was only 35min and that included the theme song at the end and beginning credits.

I hope they did it just to make sense in the episode timing. So we get aome longer ones with the Jedi and hopefully a mandalorian terrorist assault on an imperial base or something

I KNEW he was in a cult.

I loved it. We were going all geeky for Bo-Katan and crew showing up. And, indeed, I love the added elements concerning the helmet way. It will be interesting to see how much of this season is about Mando escaping not only the Imperial Remnant, but also the trappings of religious fundamentalism.

I'm pretty sure "The Way" is practiced by an exile sect of Fundamentalist Death Watch adherents and seeing as how out protagonist was adopted by them during the clone wars he has no idea that all of the other Mandalorians can do fun stuff like take their helmets off and not live in some dour toxic warrior caste cult.

I'm guessing his arc for this season or perhaps the next will be realizing that he doesn't have to live behind the armor.

(My evidence for this is that Dave Filoni wrote most of the existing canon history of the Mandalorians and I don't think he would agree to throw it all away. I also don't think Disney would take a mulligan on everything they put out regarding Mandalore in seasons 3 and 4 of Rebels.)

Called it.

This also explains why in season 1 the armorer lady talked about the Jedi like they were maybe not even a real thing.
I mean sure, they got purged by the Empire but that was 28 years ago and prior to that they did a lot of important stuff for thousands of years up to that point.

So this is something that industry people have been talking about since House of Cards first came out. With series being on in demand services and not tied to any particular time slot or commercials or even a concern about how it impacts programming before and after and what is playing on other channels producers can start to make episodes as long as they need to be. Traditionally this would have included some cut away B plot stuff probably involving BY's stay with the Frog people. It would have messed up the pacing of the episode and would have been throw away filler. They didn't need to do that here. They gave a tight 28 minutes of A plot and no need for any kind of filler.

Presumably this will be made up elsewhere in the series....or it kinda already has. Chapter 9 was 55 mins long.

Uh, no. The first episode told us he was looking for other Mandalorians, and that's about it, unless Boba's armor has major significance later. The second episode was a traveling episode, and could have been covered in its entirety with a one minute set piece about the ship being damaged on the way to the next planet. Considering how short this last episode was, that probably would have helped its run time.

Latest episode thoughts: Finally, the story is pushed along. Loved the info dump they gave us on the state of the galaxy, and the name drop. Glad to see they're not beating around the bush and dragging out a certain someone's appearance in the show. She almost certainly won't be in the next one (yay, filler) but will be in the following one. I'm fine with that, just wish they had found a way to push this episode up in order of things. It was cool to see Mando basically stumble backwards into galactic geopolitics and to get a glimpse of the state of the Empire right now. Definitely looking more like Gideon is doing his best to establish a remnant force, hopefully one that will stay semi-competent and not go full First Order on us.

I think she'll show up at the very end (cliffhanger!) of the next episode.

I hope there is a recurring role for BoKatan (I don't want a main show about her, but having her bop in, kill 400 stormtroopers in under 7 min and get out is super cool) I hope the Mandolorian keeps tabs on what's happening with the home-world.

There's no way the older Greek guy is Tristen Wren, is there?

No, IMDB lists his character's name as Axe Woves.

Forget Bo-Katan. Best part of last week's episode was the Mon Cal Dockworker in the sweater. Don't agree? Fight me!

Nah. The emotional reunion of Frog Lady and her Husband. That was the best part.

I thought he was yelling at her for bringing the wrong canister of balls.

"I wanted my clubs and golf balls, not those freaky eggs in blue jello!"

So true. And when the first egg hatched my first thought was "Congratulations ma'am. It's a tadpole."

Also, the smile on The Child's face when he saw the first egg hatch made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

After seeing what the Imperials have available to them in the latest episode, I'm really worried about Ahsoka's survival in the next episode.

More deep video game cuts. And the facility hints towards what I predicted the child was being sought after for. Though I think the contents themselves are a red herring and it's more linked in with the final scene than with you know who.
