You’re thinking that this show is something it isn’t. It’s the X-Files. It’s Clone Wars. It’s Smallville. It’s The Incredible Hulk. It’s Quantum Leap. It’s Star Trek. It’s not Breaking Bad. It’s not Watchmen. It’s not like a lot of prestige television. Not every episode is going to be connected to the mythology or the plot. It’s only “filler” if you’re expecting the show to be something other than what it obviously wants to be at this point.
It’s not padding... it’s the whole point.
Ironically, I've never actually seen either Breaking Bad nor Watchmen , but am very fond of the other shows you mentioned. That said, your comparison is flawed. Let's look at Trek in its final incarnation, Enterprise , or Smallville later on in the show. (Let's also, for the sake of argument ignore Trek 's best incarnation, DS9 , which went completely serialized by the end of its final season) Both had moved on to season long story arcs from the completely episodic beginnings. They would include quite a bit of filler episodes even into these arcs, but made sure to start the season with the resolution/continuation of the problem of the last season, and then go into filler/adventure of the week.
We haven't gotten that this season. Instead, it's Tremors: Star Wars Edition , and last week's jumble of an episode. Now, if you're happy with a show that has random things occur, and then it cuts to Baby Yoda for an "awww" moment, fine, but it does get a bit dull for me. Also, it's hard to say that's what the show is when the first season was 5/8ths story episodes, and of the remaining 3, at least two helped push the story forward in minor ways. Until we get more, this season is the oddball, not anyone's expectations of a story driven show.
