are the stairs on the other end of the hall?

Yes. Just past Short range from the entrance.

Rancor:
Action: Try to grab Kara: Fooood...: 2eP+4eA+3eD+1eS 7 successes
p-s-s.pngp-s-s.pnga-s-s.pnga-s-a.pnga-s.pnga-s-a.pngd-f.pngd-th.pngd-th.pngs-f.png

It doesn't succeed in grabbing her (aka triggering Ensnare), but it does deal 20 damage before Soak. O_O

Ouch.

Flipping a DP to have that Glow Rod fritz out. Thought it was thematic.

ouch.. she'll need Wu to patch her up.. she's almost out of the fight.

On the bright side, you've got an extra Light Side Destiny Point.

On the dark side, you don't have light anymore. :P

As previously stated, the Rancor has Slow-Firing 1 on its arm attack, so if you can get into the tunnel on this turn you'll be fine for next round.

But, it's trying to block the entrance.

Getting past is an Easy Athletics check, upgraded once. It'll take 2 Maneuvers for the others to get into the tunnel, and if they all make it the encounter will conclude since the rancor can't do anything (since you intend to keep going up and ignore it).

You're lucky you succeeded on the check!

However, with the Despair his jetpack gets damaged by one step, knocked against the doorframe when he got bumped by the Rancor.
With the Advantage, it adds a Boost to the next two PCs' attempts.

I spend the additional Success to increase my distance travelled with that move, and spend two Advantages for a free maneuver to shut the door behind me. The last Advantage I’ll use for a boost due for a later physical check.

It takes 2 Maneuvers to get into the hall, so you can't close the door as that would take a third.

The additional Success I rolled allows me to increase the distance I can travel in one maneuver.

Marginally, not by an entire Maneuver.

Besides, this wasn't a check to move a distance, the check was just to get past the Rancor. The distance would normally not require a check.

Yeah, I got that. Based upon your post, though, it’s also because of needing to get around the Rancor that the distance traveled to get into the tunnel costs two maneuvers, since moving from Short to Medium range (or vice versa) normally only takes a single maneuver. Thirty yards or so falls under Medium range. She’s sprinting full tilt, taking a shortcut, so to speak, sliding between its legs, as she passes it and the others, not running around it.

Cade and Kara were closer to the door than the rest of the party. Kara went to look at it more closely, then Cade tried to open it.

Everyone else was farther away.

You started at Medium range from your destination. So Medium-Short, Short-Engaged to reach the destination. One maneuver to get to about the Rancor, one maneuver to get past the Rancor and into the tunnel.

The check was for, as you say, sliding between its legs, or dodging around it, generally just being quick and alert enough to avoid it.

Edit: Please just post IC. My decision is made and is firmly founded on several levels, you aren't going to change my mind.

Engaged range simply means you’re close enough to be engaging a target. Otherwise it’s considered part of Short range. Secondly, while the base Success I rolled, allows me to succeed at the base task, it is the second net Success that allows me to cover that distance significantly more quickly and thus with fewer maneuvers. F&D page 142 specifically states that additional Successes allow a character to either cut the amount of time to make the Athletics check or increase the distance covered when moving. Short range only covers a handful of meters. So it’s already a “margin-able” distance. It’s the difference between a quick walk (or light jog) and a full out sprint.

It should also be noted that using Athletics to move past the Rancor means I’m using an action to move, not a maneuver because there was a risk of failing to cross the additional distance because of the Rancor. Thus, I would still have one maneuver to kick the door shut on my way past it.

I said no.

By the way, this would be arguing yourself into 2 Strain and nothing else. Even without the Rancor, it would still take 2 Maneuvers to get to the location. This would just mean it takes an Action as well. In fact, if I wanted to be really legalistic, it would take a Maneuver to disengage from the Rancor, so you'd still be within Short range of it.

1 extra Success isn't enough to skip a Maneuver, in my opinion, and it isn't supported by the RAW. Most Athletics checks aren't a matter of Maneuvers, and that extra success rule is more in line with the damage rules, Advantage expenditure on an Astrogation check, or Success on a Negotiation check: You get a marginal increase. You don't get a hit for every success on an attack.

@RuusMarev, @Tramp Graphics, unless you want to stand within short range from the Rancor and thumb your nose at it, we're out of this encounter. Go ahead and RP as desired, I'll pick up once you get to the top of the spiral staircase, which goes up a decent way, about 30 feet or so straight up.

Wu will use two stimpacks on Kara, healing 13 wounds.

Wu has 3 Strain, and 3 remaining stimpacks.

Working on the IC post now, sorry for the delay.

@RuusMarev, please make a Hard Deception check, upgraded thrice. Take both a Boost and a Setback.
