Call for suggestions: What are you having fun with that we should try??

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing

What's your most brutal and powerful death shrimp (Res bomber) build?

I want things to die. I want to look at them and see them wither before my eyes. I want to throw this ship right into the fray, up the enemies alley and punch them in the face.

I was thinking PS1 or Vennie + VTG. A few problems: 1 more upgrades it starts getting expensive fast. 2. Vennie isn't PS1. 3. Darn thing has no Reinforce and other mods to save it.

Very cool, what's his team?

I'm considering:

Scorch with Fanatical + Advanced Optics

4x Zeta Squadron Survivor with Passive Sensors and Cluster Missiles (or perhaps Homing Missiles?)

He fits in most lists pretty well. Whether you use him with Kylo and QD, a mini-swarm, or a list with Upsilons.

Most fun right now:

Kylo Ren — TIE/vn Silencer 76
Hate 3
Proton Torpedoes 13
Ship Total: 92
Half Points: 46 Threshold: 3
“Scorch” — TIE/FO Fighter 34
Fanatical 2
Advanced Optics 4
Ship Total: 40
Half Points: 20 Threshold: 2
Lieutenant Tavson — Upsilon-Class Command Shuttle

64

Tactical Scrambler

Biohexacrypt Codes

2

1

Ship Total: 67
Half Points: 34 Threshold: 6

Kylo flanks and unleashes the fury, Tavson jousts while blocking for Scorch.

Conversely, you can take the torps off Kylo and give him Optics, and Afterburners to Scorch.

I was having fun trying to nail down the synergy for this list. I think it has potential, but it feels too much like a “Everybody is there to buff Guri!”

I'm still trying to get Wullffwarro War Crimes to work, just because it's fun enough to play long-term despite most likely losing. Tomorrow I'll try this variant, switching out Biggs for Zeb and Moldy Crow to give the list a bit more bite:

Wullffwarro (56)
Saw Gerrera (9)

Ship total: 65 Half Points: 33 Threshold: 4

"Dutch" Vander (40)
Ship total: 40 Half Points: 20 Threshold: 4

NSpace told us about a list he'd fought and it's interesting, so I'm trying to reverse-engineer it. It used Tobias and Boba Fett crew to position a Hound's Tooth at very close range of enemies, and a Lancer to race forward at speed 5, creating a first-turn killbox. He wasn't able to deal enough damage to it on the first turn, and his fleet was wiped out in a few turns. Kind of a more thoughtful and less overpowered version of the triple-upsilon tactic: zerg-rush onto the opponent on that first turn. He's not sure what else was on it (maybe Static Discharge Vanes?), so I'm trying to extrapolate. Maybe they should be lighter to make room for a quadrijet or other filler ship; not sure.

Had a ball with this list past sunday. Dalan can theoretically always have a shot with after burners working before your action or pilot ability if you need emergency repo for a good r1 shot. Adsen is good alternative on him, but not necessary, it is very easy to arc dodge and get shots with his pilot ability.

Kad is a great flanker or drive by and should never be without mods. Elusive synergizes well with his pilot ability and makes him that much harder to kill. DON'T get in enemy arc range one without a focus token. He blows up immediately and all your defensive tricks will fail at once.

Dengar HAS to fly counter clockwise. If he gets caught going the wrong way, it is very difficult to get back to on track. You want initiative for this list. Dont be afraid to scrum and block all the nasties. Dengar likes to run and regen some hull after brawling and to realign his normal flight operations. Don't rotate turret. It's not worth it, he flies better as a forward arc only.

Against FO ties and sf ties, I had shots galore, kills galore and blocked a ship or two every round. No one shot at dengar until late game when they had too, and he performed well. I lost to very unfortunate dice rolls and after misjudging a 4k on Kad.

The second list was moralo in the yv666, cloaking hawk with bombs and usual torani in the kimo. Dengar face tanked all three in an honorable joust and burned the kimo down, while dalan and kad flanked. Dalan died to a perfect proxy mine roll from the hwk, while Kad burned down the hwk with lovely r1 focused shots and k turns double focused r1 shots. End game was a moralo that finally took out dengar after being put to 1 hull which a Kad, taking the scenic route around the board, handled very well for the win.

Don't cheapen dengar, he needs to be loaded with upgrades to compensate for his dual. I like Kad for the always focused style of play. Dalan needs something else that isnt Predator. Adsen maybe, daredevil maybe. I just dont know.

Four starvipers with Crack Shot.

I know what you mean. Dalan is a great pilot to fly, but lacks that edge. I4 and cost make him hard to balance in a list.

I flew him with AS, Outmanoeuvre and ProTorps, before the last point adjustment. He was honestly fantastic but cost way too much and made the squad a little off kilter. Also got pwnd hard by a cheaper Guri, there are many things that just tie his laces together.

AS is brilliant, allowing the focus or lock on turns you use the rotate. The stress switching AS off the following turn, then attempting to navigate it, without using a linked action/rotate, and switching it off again, is challenging....

Would like to have a go at AS, Afterburners and Outmanoeuvre..... A mere 76pt that. Bargain.

Been wanting to use Kad again too, very underrated.

Looks a fun list :)

Daredevil and Adv Sensors are all I usually give him. I find he really doesn’t need much else, and Daredevil works disturbingly well with him.

—Addendum— My issue with Afterburners on Dalan is that it tends to conflict with Adv Sensors. On turns where you want to use Adv Sensors, you can’t use Afterburners. But for the turns where you don’t need to use Adv Sensors you have a Boost > Focus linked action, or they are NOT the turns where you are wanting to pull a Dalan maneuver.

The only times you’d want to use Afterburners are the times you’d follow it up with a Focus > Roll, Lock, or perform an S-Loop without an AS action beforehand. Double positioning is nice... But Advanced Sensors on the Starviper seems to practically replace the utility of Afterburners.

Hmm. I hadn't really thought through the whole chain with Afterburners. That makes him even more challenging.

Haven't tried Daredevil with him. Definitely had the intention of trying him properly , i.e. efficiently, not loaded to the gills. So just AS and a talent, Daredevil is an interesting choice there. I do very much like the passive mod of Outmanoeuvre teamed with AS though, on anything that could do with both.

I have tried Daredevil on Guri. Honestly think it didn't really add much that she needed, but I imagine Dalan can do some quite silly things with it.

Gonna be trying this

Sun Fac (54)

Stalgasin Hive Guard (34)

Count Dooku (63)

I’ve tried Daredevil on Guri as well... And pretty much came up with the same assessment. She needs something... else. I tend to favor Elusive on her as its saved my bacon more than times than I’d like to admit. But Outmaneuver and even Fearless have worked well for me so far.

The thing that makes Daredevil so awesome on Dalan, besides giving you the ability to nickname him Super Dalan Osborne, is that his ability plays so well with it when you slot in a blue maneuver and lead off your activation wth Adv Sensoring a 1-turn boost. Players who don’t realize it’s a possibility, suddenly find their higher initiative ace completely flanked by a Dalan that was set up to joust head-on during the planning phase.

I've been having as much fun with this build as I have with a couple others (interceptors and Rz-2s) I've posted here.

And yep, it's four BSAs with Crack. I've tried them with Predator, but don't think it works quite as well as Crack.

Against lower initiative builds they can be very hard to predict (and thus block), and as long as you don't put them directly in front of swarms, they can last reasonably long.

Going against higher initiative ships can be trickier, so you have to play a little more conservatively.

The nice thing about the build is that you can fly it in formation, similar to how phantoms were flown, or split them up and fly them more independently.

But as always, you want them pointed at the same target, if possible.

Talk to me about wave 5.

Can't test it yet, but I'm planning on Nantex Shenanigans. This is a first pass at the idea. It won't be competitive, it's just stupid fun with my favorite Sep ships. I figure I could ensnare some aces into mines, bombs, buzz droids, and obstacles, and use Snap Shot to make range 2 dangerous as well. Though I may need to upgrade one nantex to Sun to tangle properly (by removing butter bot, giving me a 5 point bid ; most ace lists will beat that, but it's still useful against others, and ace lists do have to think about snap shot timing).

Not enough points in the list. I used the others to set up his shots and skirted the battle and tractored him out of arcs or in to better positions. 3 Ensnares cast a large net. To be honest I feel like flying a 3rd Ace with ensnare instead of Sun would be even better. Sun drew a lot of the attention but the other ships are just as deadly and they are all around the same points in the end. The first game he died early to a range three 4 dice blank out but even then I only lost by 22 points due to an Ace getting to half points on the last turn Vs Chertek, Maul, Grevious. Won handily vs Kylo, QD, Tavson and 200-0 Vader mini swarm. The game I lost was the most fun one. We were both learning the Nantex and had a blast.

I haven't yet put any on the table. They're thematically supposed to be a swarming unit (?), so it's possible FFG built them with that intent in mind. Two scrubs in the fray with 1 or 2 aces exploiting the opportunities they create seems reasonable conceptually. But I'll have to get a physical feel for them before I know.

I purchased two out of love of the ship's quirks and features. ^_^ But whether more are warranted requires some science to answer.

Yeah I haven’t gotten any play time with them
