DBM is a like 40 point missile that might do half a splash damage once. In hyperspace, the only faction that can play it is empire on bombers, which means you're playing a bomber without barrage rockets. You can also play it on a Baktoid Prototype, which would be cool but even if the expected damage on that missile is good (it isn't) there's a 0% chance that baktoid prototype gets to fire it. Unless you're also bringing swarm tactics grievous, neato.

(Weak) Counterpoint: one surprisingly successful list was Vader, Soontir and one Bomber. I‘d argue that a DBM might be ok there.

worth noting that DBM doesn't say "other" on it. You will always "splash" an extra damage die to the original target (if you hit and spend the charge, blah blah blah).

This has been fascinating, but I totally brainfarted on "Hyperspace" and was just absent-mindedly petting my Gunboats when I started all of this.

Tomax jousts the TIE swarm, inflicts 0.5 damage per TIE and maybe pops Iden's ability, then promptly dies.

Question is, who does that endgame favor?

That Tomax should hit even a 3agility+focus ship without crackshot (60%) or with (86%). And as @skotothalamos pointed out, a mere single hit is already 2 damage, plus 0.5 on every ship nearby. That is a bit more expected damage than a proton torpedo!

Because, as pointed out, DBM has even slightly higher damage output. (E: with the 50% ignored)

The only argument for protons is that 3 agility ships are harder to hit. For everyone else you should prefer DBM - and that's a meta call, which is usually interesting and has a correct answer in the past.

well, it's another die rolled... which could have been in your initial offering, which could have been focused and/or target locked, so it should be a lack of mod lower in expected damage output than a protorp. Unless padme is there and you rolled a focus already, in which case the odds are the same.

Crack Shot doesn't work with torps unfortunately. I agree on 5th bro being gud though

I actually kinda like crackshot on tomax if I dont 100% need more bid. He ends up Range 1 pretty regularly and has 1 force charge and barrel roll locking. Its pretty ok.

You know, I'm also ok with cheap i5s with blank abilities. Tomax's ability being that he's a Bomber who actually gets to shoot when he jousts things is pretty nice.

Still feels wrong. "Hey, here's a dedicated bomber/ordnance carrier with an ability that only supports primaries". Of course the i5 is the main thing and he doesn't need an ability that makes ordnance better. But maybe then something independent of initiative? I don't know, it seems as if they never bothered to rethink the ability or felt they couldn't change it.

Also, by the way, at this point @Boom Owl you are right with your remark about protons... rather put those or barrage rockets and call it a day. Maybe switch to Jonus if using barrage.

If time allows, all ideas should be explored. A lot is dismissed by most folks at headsim level, which I think is a mistake if time allows.

For sure. There are a lot of good things overlooked because not enough people are willing to explore.

For sure, we are talking about X Wing. Attention is currency in the marketplace of ideas, and some ideas do not deserve said currency.
