I just hope the Orcs come out soon... Daqan Lords interest me a bit, but the Orcs interest me the most and I don't want to have two separate armies.

I hope they are quick to release factions, otherwise the game may not gain the much needed popularity for long term support it would otherwise have if everyone's favourite factions were available.

On another note it seems strange that we haven't received any news today.

Agreed. If I have to wait ~1 year for an Elves expansion I'm sure some other new hotness will grab my attention before I give this a second look. I also wonder how sharing faction units will work. Will it be a good guy/bad guy thing? Or all units must be from your faction. I could see a smaller Elf and Orc faction box if you can sub in the humans and undead to complete your army.

The Elves and Daqan Lords were allied in the past, there was a city where all the species lived together and the Daqan still have small populations of demihumans throughout their baronies.

There apparently was some big political outfall from some massacre between elves and humans that I haven't read much about and that ended with the Latari cutting diplomatic ties and retreating into the forests.

So who knows if those ties will be rekindled.

Are there any sources of lore currently? Like a wiki or something? Or is everything from games and novels?

afaik everything currently available has been culled from the various games.

Considering Kari's ability, formal diplomatic ties might be strained but it seems like some relationship between the Latari and the Daqan still exists. Limited as it might be.

This specific lore is from the Runewars board game. A human hero is escorting a vampire prisoner to the latari and they have a conversation about the Daqan attack on a latari stronghold. His answer was something like, this is war baby, I had no choice.

I'm looking forward to them adding Dwarves and Orcs to the game, but I might jump in sooner if I am confident that they will be released later.

And I hope they release all of the armies paired in core boxes. They seem to be a much better value than the expansions and it makes it easier to start playing with your preferred army rather than needing a core box and then the army you actually want (three forces total) to start playing.

I think it is good to remember how fractious the Daqan are. They have no king, just individual Barons, along with the loosely aligned Free Cities.

This can lead to very different Daqan forces, and potentially different relationships with the Latari. Maybe some are reconciliatory, maybe some remember how reluctant elves have been in the past to step up against the evils of the world and think the pointy eared daisy eaters should just bugger off.

Should leave Daqan players room to customize their force presentation for some uniqueness that would otherwise be missing from the "yet another group of knightly humans" faction.

I think I would like to see them release something like 'army starter' boxes for new factions. If I want to start a second army I would rather not have to buy core 2 and find myself with a little of everything. I think we could start a neat culture with this game though where you turn to one of your friends who wants to play and just say 'happy birthday!' and hand him a starter army with all the extra tokens and dice and cards and crap you don't need after you pulled out your elves. Now he will get into playing and can just buy the expansions. I've seen casual players do it with xwing because they picked up a core cheap for some specific card and a few ties, and hand off a few rebel ships they never fly to give them a full list.

I look forward to see how this is portrayed, I'm going to assume we are going to see a lot of interesting army building skills on the heroes of Daqan to create the feel of different baronies.

This is why we need the lore book! I'm sure the different baronies will have different heraldry and colors. It would be really nice to have some reference point for painting up your army!

Yeah, I want to see what the Barony of Tamar would look like. In Disk Wars their Baron decided that they needed to fight dirty to defeat the Uthuk and I think turned to the Ynfernal, they had abilities to sacrifice in order to summon what I assumed were demons, weird reaper like creatures, to fight the Uthuk.

Now Timmoran's apprentice Lumii Tamar also came from there, so I'm curious as to what happened to the Baron Vallyr and his faction once Daqan became king, and what has become of the Barony in these hundreds of years. I'm hoping for perhaps a less honorable and more practical people.

Yeah, the lore book is really needed sooner rather than later I think.

A lore book comes in the core set.

yeah, but isn't it like 30 pages? That's a good start, but I'm talking one like the Worlds of Android book.

I'm sure they have some people working one up to sell to us for money$. What I'd really love to see is them work up something like an epic trailer with just still images and dramatic music that explains the conflict and shows off the minis and artwork. Put it on youtube and let us share it on facebook or something to get an 8.5X11 print-your-own-poster PDF of runewars to hang up in our painting area to inspire us.

I would love to be proven wrong, but i expect to see the elves and uthuk at gen con this year. and hopefully the dwarves and orcs the gen con after that.

I would love to see elves/uthuk soon, and dwarves/orcs eventually (but I doubt factions 5/6 will happen for a few years at least since we haven't seen any concepts). I have to wonder how long it will take, and how it will be implemented. When they introduced Scum for XWing, they pushed it off for a few years, and then we have seen a lot of waves with a majority of scum ships to catch up, and now that the faction is established the waves are starting to balance back out. I see two possible options:

  1. They will be focusing on just rolling out Daqan/Waiqar for the first 2-3 waves (about 1 year) with us getting 2D/2W unit expansions per wave. Then we see elves/uthuk core 2 release, with 2E/2U/1WoD waves of unit expansions after that. If they follow that kind of schedule, we may have the D/W Core plus 4-6 D and 4-6 W expansions before the E/U Core releases. Wave I will be D Inf Comm, W Inf Comm, D Cavalry, W Archers (already announced). Then, I think they will have a mid-wave release of the mounted Daqan hero (now that their cavalry is big enough). Wave II will probably be Waiqar/Daqan siege expansions, and I think introduce Waiqar cavalry, and some new Daqan ranged unit. I could even see them releasing an -elf- unit with this wave instead of Daqan ranged, as a unit that Kari could take and to begin building the hype for the E/U Core. Then they might announce a mid-wave Waiqar mounted hero (since they have cavalry now). Wave III might some new D/W units to shake up the metas that have begun to establish, like cavalry command expansions or some kind of specialist units. Then announce E/U Core as a mid-wave release post-W3, and focus on building up those factions for a few waves, alternating between a new unit for Waiqar and Daqan.
  2. They focus on D/W for the first wave (as announced), and announce the E/U Core as the first mid-wave release, and follow with a 2E/2U Wave 3. Then Wave 4+ is 1E/1U/1D/1W. I see this as a very balanced option, giving players a lot of time to work out the kinks of the core and allowing them to introduce a few factions at a time, and then a balanced release of new units that doesn't need to be equal for all factions. Wave 4 could be rune golem, waiqar cavalry, elf pegasus, and some cool uthuk (sorry, I don't know the lore well enough!), with other stuff like carrion lancer to follow in other waves.

It all really just depends on how long they plan to develop the game with the first two factions. I definately think they would release a E/U Core as a mid-wave release, like they did with the Core II in XWing.

I predict we see Uthuk Y'llan and Latari Elves displayed as prototypes at GenCon to be sold about a year after the core release.

At a guess, I'm agreeing with Budgernaut. Elves and Uthuk demo at gencon, release around this time next year. With us perhaps getting Hawthorne/Vorakesh and unit expansions at gencon.

So the new Daqan article mentions Latari as 'soon to release'. Hopefully that is a good sign!

We have already seen an unmounted and mounted version of Vorakesh. So I expect when this hits we'll also have a Bone Horror cavalry unit for Waiqar.

Edit:

On an unrelated note I hate the necromancers chest. It looks like it's supposed to be bony with the ribs poking through but looks unnatural as it is lacking the sternum.

That may be some sort of bone vest not his actual ribcage.
