1. Standard Rank1 characters (the adventure is scaled accordingly). Backgrounds should be appropriate for a Rank 1 character: e.g., "promising student" rather than "acclaimed scholar" for an Adept.
2. Pretty much any of the homeworlds, backgrounds, packages, etc. are avaiable (with the exception of some in the Radical's handbook -- check with me). I'm trying to avoid repetition of character archetypes and unusual/exotic backgrounds, so the following are taken: Feral World and Monastic Upbringing and Gunmetal City homeworlds; Guardsman, Scum, and Adepta Sororitas/Adept (one character is a Sister Hospitaller); Metallican Gunslinger alternate rank. Feel free to take anything else.
3. When the adventure starts, the characters have no connection with the Inquisition at all, so when you make up a background, don't worry about that part.

Background:
The Imperium as a whole is stiffling and oppressive, with few places to seek freedom and a place where every action is not bound by endless laws. Space travel is a luxury available to few and one that Xanthis was lucky (or cursed) enough to have been born into. The Shining Glory guild is a fairly small collection of minor noble houses and their employees and retainers.
Xanthis' family had served faithfully for several centuries and his skill at trading and calcution were an indication that he might do well in his future there, a bright hope that was dashed by one, fatal mistake. He had greed to pick up an extra cargo on an otherwise routine collection from a Forge World. Most of what the ship he was on colelcted were standard items, bound to a nearby Imperial World, but he was unaware the extra, small crate he'd collected, contained a Xeno artifact that was being smuggled, but was also being tracked by the Inquistion.
The artifact, the smugglers and Xanthis were all seized, effectively and quietly. It was at that point that Xanthis was given a choice. Either he would assist an Inquistior with his skills and contacts throughout the sector, or he would be given the Emperor's mercy, after seeing his entire family be put to death.
Xanthis agreed to serve and does so almost fanatically, as he knows the price his family will pay if he fails.
