Somewhat-OT: That new "Rebels" TV series is looking so AWFUL it pains me to think we'll be getting ships from it

By xanderf, in X-Wing

That's a problem.

EVERYTHING IS WRONG AND BROKEN AAAAAAAAHHHHH

Yeah, when you look closely it's not the Clone Wars style at all. It's all VERY McQuarrie. Just pause any moment in the clips, it'll look like a Ralph McQuarrie painting.

That was my first thought at the opening scene of the Zeb short. It just LOOKS like McQuarrie's paintings!

Precisely why Rebels has its own charm separate from The Clone Wars. Both attempt to emulate a style, but very, very different styles.

...except, nope, now we've got a series of "new canon" that tells us Storm Troopers only hit when rolling '0' on 1d6...

The series will be establishing a new set of standards to the capabilities of ships, units, and personal based on a 'kiddie'-level of sophistication (good guys always good/always win - bad guys all incompetent and have weak equipment), but it becomes canon by merely being in the series.

That's a problem.

Uhm... what?

The incompetence of stormtroopers has been a long-respected Star Wars joke. As far back as the mid-80s I remember the joke "Assuming no outside influence, what happens between a squad of Imperial Stormtroopers, who can never hit anything, and a squad of Enterprise redshirts, who must die immediately after beaming down? Paradox!"

The idea of slightly competent Imperials in gaming has somehow managed to survive THE ENTIRE COLLECTION OF FILM EVENTS. I think it'll survive Rebels.

I mean seriously, "an entire legion of the Emperor's best troops!" completely annihilated by 16 Rebels and a horde of rock-throwing teddy bears. The impressive thing is that anyone ever got the idea that stormtroopers could be competent at all. Ever.

I dont know what server you were on in SWTOR lol because it was almost like 10-1 on every single server I rolled a character on haha.

No it wasn't. It may of seemed that way, but it wasn't. They did enough checking on active characters to show that not every server favored the Sith, and the balance wasn't nearly as bad as some people claimed.

Again I don't care what some people have claimed lol... I know for a fact because I played on 4 different servers on the Republic side and was outnumbered at least 3-1 if not waaaaaaaay more in each PVP zone. Again small sample size, yes but the results were enough for you to make an educated guess on the populations of each side.

No it's not, it's not even close to being large enough to draw any sort of conclusion from. I did however see the stats back in the first few months of the game, and those based on an addin that counted up the /who list for each zone people entered, said that the difference was not anywhere near 1-3.

So on the one hand you have objective stats based on thousands upon thousands of players both PvE and PvP, vs your completely subjective experience in PvP zones.

The impressive thing is that anyone ever got the idea that stormtroopers could be competent at all.

I think it has a lot to do with the Boba Fett effect... We haven't seen Stormtroopers in a long time, and over time, and in some of the EU books, they started to become better at their job, and after a while started to achieve actual competence and perhaps even beyond.

Just like Boba, who if you take his in film actions as evidence was not much better then a typical stormtrooper.

In the movies he manged to stand around, second guess Han's trick, stand around some more, get whopped on by Luke who apparently figured he wasn't a threat, and then get knocked into the Sarlak pit by a blind Han Solo.

Yet he has become according to some, the most deadly bountyhunter in the galaxy...

I dont know what server you were on in SWTOR lol because it was almost like 10-1 on every single server I rolled a character on haha.

I played on Wall of Light, and we had at least as many Republic players as Sith, if not more.

As of 2012 when I stopped playing... correct me if I am wrong but most of that data fully supports exactly what I said 3-1. Ilum data is more than 10-1 lol.

So maybe closer to 2-1 but we were still outnumbered on almost EVERY server.

And before anyone says thats just PVP servers, of course it is... I don't count care bear players in any calculations, pansies........ :P

Still not 10-1 it's not even 2-1. It's 1.84-1 for PvP and 1.2-1 for PvE servers. So that means there were slightly more Imps the Reb's on avg.

Imperial troops are as imcompetent as they have to be for te stor. Yes id like to see characters have to patch themselves up and even die. But that isnt the Star Wars way much as id like it to be. Remember Harrison Ford begged Lucas to kill off Han but was declined with extreme prejudice (which rendered the line "I just got a feeling...like im never going to see her again" completely daft)

The heroes have to be able to avoid withering fire. Indiana Jones (slightly ot but related) survived a hail of darts from tribespeople who in the real world can pick off a monkey jumping through a treetop and then through the best of the films seems to have faced the entire Third Reich.
I am ok with regular joe Stormtroopers not getting any awards for marksmanship. I cant remember the ratio of shots fired per kill in an actual war situation but it is pretty high. But the writing should make us feel like the characters are in a life and death situation.

When Han chased the Stormtroopers in SW he was pumped on adrenaline and the probable urge to be the big man in front of the princess (oh the 70s) after she had been putting him down since the rescue. But upon chasing them into a corner he panicked and bolted the other way knowing ,as we the audience knew, that staying would result in a smoking corpse.
These things work best in a movie where the story is short and concise. In a series format they need to bring in different levels of Trooper competence and enemy threat to ramp it up over time.

In the d6 game (just for example) our characters had gotten to the point where a frigate wasnt that big a deal anymore. our skils and the Ravenheart (ship) had been improved to the point where we were all bad ass so while a frigate would hurt our ship the odds on it taking us out were slim.

Then an old friend who had turned to the darkside showed up and things got a lot harder for us since he was working with an Imperial Admiral who had a custom Battle Carrier, This drove us into the rebellion and the result was that Admiral Lainous was defeated...or so we thought.

Until he showed up again with our old darkside buddy in a Praetor class with an imperial fleet which all eventually led to a desperate battle between Rebel and Imperial fleets over the blasted remains of the planet Corvus.

So if the regular troops arent cutting it throw in some elites. Ecalation works. But admittedly only up to a point then it becomes silly

A) It's a cartoon

B) The only thing Storm Troopers have ever been able to hit accurately is the tracks of a sand crawler.

C) It's a cartoon

It looks really fun, and the fact that it's a new Star Wars thing set in the decent era is brilliant!

Have you seen the this one?

I can see where they are coming from though. Just because its animated doesntmake it less canon than live action.

On the other hand its shown in lore that stormys have very good aim its the E-11 thats the problem. Even Han Solo misses with it at near point blank range. The good thing about the e-11 is its heavy hitting power , its mag can be 50 - 100 - 500 rounds. Its better at being a street sweeper.

Anytime an argument is made for one side vs another in MMO population wise; it only matters in PVP. To say it does in PVE is semantics and people will use it to prove their point, "look when you add the carebear servers, were slightly outnumbered"... Well guess what, it matters a helluva lot more on a PVP server than it does PVE which gets back to the original debate... people love baddies nowadays.

This is sarcasm, right ?

If you're arguing that people like to play the bad guys for flavor reasons, then PvE and RP servers are probably more indicative of that than PvP.

LOL was I laying it on too thick??? Ok fine, I admit maybe it wasn't as one sided as it felt playing the game. Happy now jerks

I genuinely asked, because if you are talking about Faction popularity for a TV show, even in the simple minded case that you only took into account the data from one MMORPG, you also decide to ignore more than half the data (PVE servers have more players than PvP, just so you know) because they are carebears.

Not to speak, that open world pvp on Swtor is almost nonexistent and a joke anyways. If we were talking about games like UO, original darkfall, eve online or AoC hardcore, FFA open world PvP games, i would say, yeah it is cool to play that games on PvP servers. But Swtor ? Even if i played on a PvP server because i always do, the open world pvp experience is so lacking that you are not missing much by playing on a PvE server.

Aint that the truth... and I had such high hopes for that game... and don't get me started on "wait what do you mean I can't speeder bike to Anchorhead??? I can see it from here"

Pale shadow of SWG.

Not going to get sucked into this, because i'm super excited for this show, and seeing The Ghost in X-Wing.

Just wanted to point everyone in this thread towards my signature. Keep that in mind.

I have to say that I'm very happy that we're finally seeing an actual twi'lek character. Oh, sure we had Aayla Secura before, but she did nothing of note in the movies, and her appearances in The Clone Wars could have been fulfilled by any other Jedi.

I like that Hera's not some thug's eye candy and that she doesn't follow the twi'lek trend of needing to show off skin all the time. I don't have a problem with that. I have a Jedi Guardian in TOR that wears about the same amount of clothing as Aayla did. But, it's nice to see a character break that trend. I'm interested in seeing her story told.

Still, I have no doubt that there'll come an episode where Hera has to "dress up." it is inevitable.

Elsewhere in the Star Wars universe, Mark's looking promisingly Obi Wan...

Which I've got no problem with. SJWs do but eh. SJWs.

Yep. Been sayin' that for a while myself.

He also looks kinda' buff. Much moreso than he did ~30 years ago.

Perfect way to go for an older Luke imho. Not many actors get the opportunity to return to a character 30 years down the line - huge opportunity for Mark really!
