Why do you think the Alliance is cooler than the Empire?

By ErikB, in General Discussion

Hi people!

Well, its simplistic but "I love the good side". Here's the extended version.

As probably most of you will know George's Lucas Star Wars its a simplistic/almost classical story where good is good and bad is bad. Classical theatrical story where you don't have to think about what are you doing because "you are with the good guys!" (Of course refering to the old trilogy).

Its not a bad critique, just a commentary. George old movies wheren't those new ones where sometimes you don't know who is the "good guy" or if he/she ever existed.

Rebels destroyed the "evil" Death Star killing millions on people? Don't care! Everyone there was a bad person! XD

Bad guys can only make two things: Be killed be underleveled-heroes or redeem and become good guys.

Asoka in Clone Wars... SPOILERS made a reallly mature affirmation focus where she ruborized even the wise and powerful Yoda and Obi-Wan saying that Jedi failed themselfs because their choices SPOILERS OFF

Thats because the new "expansions" of the old trilogy where more rich in backstory and narrative aspects.

Despiting this facts Rebelion wants to bring "Democracy" to every creature in the galaxy, without care if alien/Force Sensitive or not without (or not so apparent) fear doctrine (They still have death sentence and Mon Calamari cruisers there to "disuade you") XD

Classical Democracy isn't the best way of rule because uses to win the one who have more mass-media resources to convince people but probably is the least bad system we know actually. But this things fall apart because uncle George says "you are the good guy Luke" XD

And if you let me give you a tip ErikB. Sometimes, some of your point of view expositions are "a bit agressive" (someone even can consider them offensive).

I'm with you with some of your points of view but the way you expose them sometimes can harm other people.

Isn't the same say:

"I like green because its a soft color and personally I dislike yellow because makes me feel a bit sad" to...

"Green is the only good color, yellow is awful and eveyone who likes yellow is a criminal!!!" XD

Sorry for the exageration. As I said, I agree in you with some therms in some posts but, please, respect the other points of view and share your own please! Share and cultural differences are good.

About your other post (divide forums)... NO please, no more Berlin Walls. With respect we can live in peace.

Another day I will told you about a breakfast in a terrace with a Communist, a Fascist, a Republican and a Religious guy... was awesome! (We ended speaking about soccer and laughing) XD

Take care people and sorry for the long post :D

PS: Luke last scene "I'm a Jedi like my father before me and Palpatine angry face was awesome" XD

Not true. Lister had some redeeming qualities. He's more like Rimmer.

Indeed. But I wasn't comparing him to Lister as a person, but more to his inability to play a guitar "like the ghost of Hendrix", despite his steadfast assurance that he's a master of the instrument.

He's like a guitarist who claims to play dozens of chords...all of which coincidentally involve the same two strings as all the others.

Erik is to these boards what Dave Lister was to guitar playing.

Woah there. Rimmer grew to have some very redeeming qualities. Remember, the first Rimmer became the new Ace.

You, sir, are the master of understatement.

I guess some people can change. Maybe there is hope for others.

I loved Red Dwarf. And, to be fair, Rimmer grew on you after a while...

You know what? This is officially a Red Dwarf thread now.

I never saw Series X. How was it? I saw Series VIII back in 2008 or so, and I hated how it ended on a cliffhanger.

Series X is classic. Back to the good Doug Naylor scripts. There was even talk, I believe, about another series...

Also, the Red Dwarf RPG is epic. I miss my human, Russell, who travelled with an android with MPD and a hologram of the woman he continually tried to woo (and failed. Epicly.)

Fellow workers and peasants, this is the socialist and democratic revolution of the working people, with the working people, and for the working people. And for this revolution of the working people, by the working people, and for the working people we are prepared to give our lives.

As I have said before, the ever more sophisticated weapons piling up in the arsenals of the wealthiest and the mightiest can kill the illiterate, the ill, the poor and the hungry but they cannot kill ignorance, illnesses, poverty or hunger.

Shut this thread down, we've already had the best answer... but now I suspect that That Blasted Samophlange is actually a Mon Calamari .

It was just good to have the crew back. Frankly I thought "Back to Earth" was a bit... well derivative. Lots of references to other shows and movies. Still worth watching for any fan, just not a place to get new ones.

I really wish that Grant & Naylor would reunite for another season. They worked best together.

Amen to that!

Well, you've sold me. I need to go back and re-watch the entire show so I'm all caught up and fresh for Back to Earth and Series X.

I didn't know there was a Red Dwarf RPG, though. What was it like? And what was the core mechanic?

Looks like you can still get a copy of the core book at a sane price, at least by current standards. It's ten years old now, but the style is very appropriate, and the core mechanic is a suitably simple 2d6-based arrangement. (I'd say more, but I'm at work, and I'd need to refresh my memory before I tried to add any detail.)

Core system is Deep 7's XPG system. 2d6 for Stat+skill+difficulty modifer or less. Same engine is used in Radz, Arrowflight 2E, and a few other of their games. Stats run 1-7 (typically 2-6), skills sta rt in the 1-4 range, with 4 being pretty rare.

Typical stats are 4's, typical starting skills are 1's and 2's. Difficulty modifiers run +2 to -3. Characters fail most tasks.

It's a wonderful source for information about the setting, and has good advice for running it, but it's not adapted from the standard XPG mechanics - it uses them straight up. And my players really didn't find it funny.

The RPG is awesome. We ran four series worth of material before it died - and that ONLY because a player moved away and the group didn't want to run it without him (me included).

Sorry for the delay. Thanks Maelora! :D

Wouldn't this system (EotE and AoR) work well for a Red Dwarf RPG?

With the threat and advantages you could create lots of Dwarfish situations, the crew rarely 100% succeed and often what they do causes more problems (threat)

You would probably need to add some kind of personality flaw system :)

Deep7 certainly did (Rimmer's stats include a lot of 'em, and of course none of the other main characters are slouches in the personality flaw department). In fact, it might not be too hard to adapt that system, but it does include advantages as well.

You know, that actually sounds like a wonderful idea. With some minor exceptions, I doubt that it would be terribly difficult to re-skin EotE as Red Dwarf and run with it. You've got humans, droids, and cats. Well, Bothans. Do you think the Obligation mechanic would adapt well to a "flaw" system?

Everyone else, thanks a ton for all of the info on the Red Dwarf RPG!

The flaws could simply be altered obligations and motivations.

That's kind of what I was getting at. Instead of Obligations, the characters would have "flaws" and if a d00 roll at the beginning of the session was less than or equal to the total number of flaw score, the flaw would have some sort of impact on the session, in addition to affecting everyone's strain thresholds.

Lister's motivation: Curry. Oh, and getting back to Earth. Haha.

Well smoke me a kipper and call me a GELF's uncle, I think we're on our way to creating a Red Dwarf hack for this system.

"A game of Edge of Smeg anyone?"

Rebels are cooler as they have constant facelift to current tacticool Call of Duty-ish standards.

Funny how humble, slightly goofy and "scary" stormtrooper remains the same, iconic, and badass.

I think they are cool because they are the scrappy underdog. I do not want or need to make them out to be Rambos or CoD replicants.

My point. They best work as combination of partisans and various armies-in-exile, fighting for what they think is right, and willing to make sacrifices for their ideals. That is their main appeal, not their equipment, not numerous dogmatic arguments how really good guys they are, and making them superficially and artificially cool.

I think you mean Obligation: Food Stand on Fuji

Edit - This is a much better thread now.
