Specialization Decks?

By Desslok, in Star Wars Roleplaying Specialization and Adversary Decks

Wait - we're turning this into a card game now?

Perhaps it's a random adventure generator? Flip over a card from the Badguy pile, the Task pile and the Location pile? Boom! Instant adventure?

***EDIT***

Here's the appropriate link: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4300

We've got decks ($6.99 each) for

* Bodyguard

* Marauder

* Mercenary Soldier

* Scout

* Trader

* Fringer

I guess they are cards with the pertinent details that players can set in front of themselves. Less book checking.

I really don't know.

I think from the description that it is just cards for the talents in the trees, letting you keep the ones you have bought with experience in front of you without having the whole tree.

Specialization Decks almost sound like a way of keeping track which talents in the talent tree they have...

Looking at the page it suggests to me that they are cards for each Talent tree. One talent to a card.

Good link, thank you.

I guess that is why they don't have PDF versions of the Talent Trees available for sale. After reading that, I would still prefer to have the full talent tree all on one page though.

Looks like a handy resource. Sort of like 4e power cards. Just print the ones your character has. Less page flipping.

I think by "Print on Demand", it just means that they print the pack when you order them. I just ordered several, and you order a pack containing the skills for a specific specialization, each pack having 19 skills in it, I believe.

Well, that seems kind of cool. Not sure how useful they'd be, and do we have to get more than one deck - AKA a smuggler deck, a politico deck and so on - or does one deck encompass every Talent? 20 doesn't seem enough, even accounting for the duplicates like Grit and the like.

Yup, one deck per spec. At $6.95 each, really not worth it for me compared to a printed talent tree. That said, lots of people will probably love them.

Each specialization has a total of 20 talents right? So one deck of cards will cover one complete specialization. If you're a smuggler, get the smuggler deck, etc. No need to buy it more than once.

I am wondering how they deal with Talents like Grit where you can buy multiple instances of the Talent, but they're located at different places on the Talent tree.

Each card has its prerequisite Talents listed on the card, so we will see...

Yeah, I'm a stupid-head. I found the Buy Them link a few moments after I posted. Yup, big ol' stupid-head!

Anyway, here's the decks they have:

Bodyguard

Marauder

Mercenary Soldier

Scout

Trader

Fringer

(The grand total for the whole lot, before shipping is 41.70, by the way)

I wonder if this is all the decks we'll see (AoR not withstanding). I don't see anything for Colonist at all.

Well, even if the same talent is on one tree multiple times, the cost is different.

As for the price, I can't imagine buying them all for myself. Just the ones for my character.

I have to believe they'll make a deck for each spec eventually.

I think on the product page it says "six are available now with more on the way" or something.

I'm a pretty big fan-boy, and like to have every book there is. That said, these look like a big ol waste of money to me. None of the talents are that complicated, a brief note on a character sheet seems sufficient. If I need more information, that's what the book is for.

It's not like we can't make our own cards just as easily.

Naw, I'll probably pass - depending on the early reviews, this is. :)

Aw, who am I fooling. I'll no doubt get a full set when I go to order the AoR beta (another product I don't actually need)

Looks like the first six are available at Gen Con, so maybe someone will post a review of card quality, etc.

personally i'm not that interested in talents as PoD cards. but i'd love to see adversaries presented this way. like the creature cards from WFRP3.

I'm in. Thinking of ordering some soon.

I have to be honest, selling them for the price that they are and in individual specialisations (not even careers) I am highly unlikely to buy these. I would like a deck of Antagonists, that would be very useful, perhaps even a deck with random encounters.

I see these PODs as player driven. You really can't expect the GM to start buying decks of every specialty his players might have. If a player wants them, go buy the deck(s) he/she needs.

I like bits and pieces. It's POD and not a replacement for what is in your book. So, it's completely optional. I applaud FFG for doing these and hope we will later see some location cards, adversary cards, ship cards, etc.
