Any SE Michigan games?

By Johdo, in X-Wing Organized Play

i'm thinking about entering into nationals at GenCon this year...if for nothing else to get the participation card. Sacrificing what equates to an entire day at GenCon is tough for me, but i may just do it. Even if i go 0-8 (or however many rounds there are), at least i'll have played X-Wing...against good players no less!

I would recommend going to a National tourney if you can. A bunch of us went to Canadian Nationals and it was worth it just for the exclusive card and the chance to play some games against stronger opponents. The fact that US Nationals is at Gencon makes it even better in that you could pickup early releases of stuff. You should totally do it! I know missing a day of "shopping" at Gencon is a bummer, but if you get knocked out early you can go back to shopping, if you're winning then you'll walk away with some good prizes.

This year will be my 11th year at GenCon, so i'm no stranger to being there. I am, however, a sucker for alternative art cards...

Anyone else planning to show up to RIW tonight?

Been a while since I've played, but I'll be there with my stuff and I'd be up for a game or two unless pathfinder needs me.

I'm planning to be there.

Hello all,

I apologize in advance for not reading through all 80+ pages of this thread!

Does anyone here play at Eternal Games or Gamers Gauntlet?

I've played at Eternal a few times -- nice places and good folks. I won't be back for a few weeks due to work commitments, though.

I play there when I am at my in-laws. I'll be at the flatland store championship tomorrow.

Lots here play at gg and eternal. Eternal has regular tourneys every friday and gg has casual play every tuesday. Eternal is probably is the best place if your looking for some tournament style games. They had 12 there tonight.

I go to Eternal maybe once or twice a month. They have a pretty good crowd of between 6-12 who show up on Friday nights between 6:30-7 PM. Eternal also does tournaments with larger prizes once or twice a month on Saturdays around noon or 1PM if Friday is dedicated exclusively to date night.

Gamer's Gauntlet I've heard has a decent group too, and there is some co-mingling of players between the two stores.

RIW also has a Thursday group, and there are some super knowledgeable players over there if the south side is closer to where you are. The first post in this thread has a good summary of where in the greater Detroit area you can find games.

I'm in Warren, so RIW is not close. I've been to both GG and EG a few times already.

I went to EG last night to pay my first real games of X-Wing. As I suspected, I need a lot of practice!

I hit plenty of asteroids, forgot half my upgrades, clumsily bumped ships with my hand, sentenced Tycho to death for no reason, and in general was a complete n00b - but I had fun. I did manage to kill every enemy ship I faced except the two Decimators though, so not a complete disaster.

Clumsily bumping ships still happens to me after about a year and a half of play. Hitting asteroids still happens, and my ratio of forgetting upgrades has fallen from about 75% of the time to 25% of the time, but it still happens. As long as you're having fun that's what matters. Welcome!

Great tourney last night. Thanks to Flat Land for hosting. Some great wins and some crushing losses, it was a lot of fun.

On the first post, i have Eternal on Monday night. Has that moved to Friday, or is it both Monday and Friday? Would like to make sure it's accurate as much as possible. :)

Every friday night $5 buy in with 100% store credit given to the top 2 or 3 depending on how many show. Usually a bigger saturday tourney that replaces a friday once a month. 6:30 register 7:00 start on fridays.

Yeah, Eternal moved it to Friday nights at 6:30

Actually, I believe about half get at least their money back in store credit. Last night, there were 12 that showed up and I think 5 got store credit.

First page updated to reflect Eternal on Friday nights and not Monday nights.

If anyone else sees any changes that need to be made, please let me know.

Agreed, had a blast at Flatland Games' store championship yesterday. Will definitely make the trek down from Lansing for future tournaments. Thanks for hosting!

Signed up for AFK's store championship today - it's next Saturday (2/7) at 11 AM.

Minor thing about Flat Land's Store Championships, if they get a regional I hope they recruit a T.O.

I know their staff was doing the best they could without being hard core X-wing guys, and things turned out ok for the Store Championships. But for regionals it would probably be helpful to have someone familiar with the rules who isn't playing designated to resolve rules questions and to calculate the tie breakers and such. The staff came up to me a couple of times during my matches to ask questions about rules, which didn't bother me too much, but it did distract me a little from the matches I was in the middle of.

Probably putting the cart a bit before the horse, but that was the only negative from the Flat Land tourney. (Aside from the late start, but these things always start late no matter where you go ;) )

Anyone down for some X wing tonight?

I'm headed out to RIW Hobbies in Livonia today for their open play. This will be my first time going somewhere to actually play. Will anyone else be there? I'm a little afraid of showing up and being the only one there.

Welcome to the forums and to the game. I should be there, but I have to stop by the dealership first, so I might be a bit late. The past few weeks we've had a good showing of 4-6 people, so there shouldn't be any problem finding games.

Note: Recently Warhammer 40k has kinda taken over our usual play area, so if you don't see anyone in the "lounge," that's probably because we had to move to the "competition hall" right next door.
