I will be at eternal Monday.

Awesome, I have a new list I'm excited to try out.

A4rino, that can work for me.

I just got home, so I can't do a full report now, but 1st round I used my second and final store bye for... 2nd round was against phildo, which was kinda annoying that I drove 4 hrs to play against someone I play locally. When time was called, he had the win, but it was still open as far as who should win (though in the detailed report, i'll explain why it shouldn't have been). 3rd round I played against a complete noob that had no clue wtf he was doing... but that didn't seem to matter since i couldn't roll to save my life... Literally... To reiterate how bad this guy is... he was the first and only win that Toresse's girlfriend has had now in the past two weeks of playing, and she's doesn't really like the game and has only played in the two regionals. But again, doesn't matter if dice are cold.

4th round my dice continued to be cold, I was playing a dual shuttle + Firespray w/ HLC list... And at the end of turn 1 I lost both X wings (Firespray HLC 1 shotted Biggs at range 3... hit hit hit blank, krassis reroll = direct hit... biggs = blank blank... and dual shuttles both rolled 3 hits, and I rolled 6 blanks on Hobbie)... so there was no way that I was going to come back from that, but the poor little a wing tried his best... got a shuttle down to 2 hull and the firespray down to 3 (with the occasional help of roark) ... when I realized that he had both engine upgrade and anti-pursuit lasers on both of his shuttles, so the TO disqualified him and I got a win out of it anyways. Then I played a 6 named TIE swarm, and my dice decided that they were okay rolling hits every now and then, so I slowly whittled him down, I did lose Biggs, Roark and Hobbie were rather injured, but I walked away with the win. I think they guy started pouting there at the end because I was only giving him shots on my A wing, and he couldn't hit the **** thing to save his life (I mean, when you're throwing 2v3/4 and I have F+E... you're not going to do much damage). After that win, I was in 12th, with an outside chance of making top 8.

I got matched up against Rinehart, whom I've never played in person, but we've played online quite a bit against each other, so we were both familiar with each others lists and strategies... And while I outmaneuvered him in the beginning (A wing caused his Garven and Red to bump, and then the red was ionized and plopped on an asteroid) and so I had the advantage, my dice were on fire!! So it wasn't really a fair match... He had 2 rounds of 4 ships shooting at Biggs, and a 3rd of 2 shooting him, and Biggs lived through it all. There were back to back R3 through an asteroid that I rolled 4 evades each time. Given the first time he only had 1 hit, and the 2nd he only had 2... but that's not the point... my dice were brutal that game that I could have been the most incompetent player and still won (See round 3 for an example).

And some how, winning in round 6 dropped me from 12th to 14th. No one else I played won that round, so I didn't gain any SoS, and was dropped to the bottom of the 4-2 folks (where as I was rather high compared to the 3-2 entering the final round). I'll do a more detailed one later, but there's the run down. Phildo went on and snuck into 8th because I won that final game though, so I guess it was worth winning :)

I will be at eternal Monday.

Awesome, I have a new list I'm excited to try out.

I should be there as well.

I'll swing by Eternal on Monday as well.

I've got my first bunch of B-wings I might want to try out just for fun.

A4rino, that can work for me.

A4rino - Thanks for the good games today, had a good time!

Thanks for the games at Eternal Games last night guys! Now we have first hand experience showing that a 3 bomber list is a bit... risky.

Thanks for the games at Eternal Games last night guys! Now we have first hand experience showing that a 3 bomber list is a bit... risky.

It definitely is.

Definitely a few good games at Eternal last night. I will crack that dual-HWK combo yet, getting closer.

The owner ended up buying a few starters and expansions to learn the game. A couple of the regular monday night magic players started learning the game so Monday nights may be growing a bit.

Alrighty, I know a few of you were asking for a report from the Ohio Regional. I’m not going to bother putting this up in the battle reports because I’m not too proud of my showing there and wouldn’t normally do a write up, but I’ve gotten notes from several people asking for it, so I figured I’d put it here in my “home thread.”

First off, for whatever reason, they decided to do a 6 “70 minute” rounds, because according to them, those were the instructions FFG gave them. There were 40 people that showed up, so someone did it wrong between PA and OH since PA was instructed by FFG to do 5 rounds. I’m inclined to think OH did it wrong because PA was run so perfectly. With 10 store championship byes, assuming a binary win/loss distribution (aka, ignoring drops, modified and draws), the math at the beginning told me that there would be one 6-0 person, and only 5 5-1 people, meaning that 4-2 would be good enough to sneak into the top 8, but per my usual thought process – it would require you to go 4-0 and then 0-2.

So I started off by using my second and final store championship bye (and now I’m wishing I went to Fanfare and won a 3rd). I had some Subway with Phildo and talked with Eric (from Lansing) and Jeff (from Ohio, Eric’s brother). I’d met them both last year at RIW’s regional where Jeff won, and I’ve seen Eric at several other local tourneys, most recently at the Escalation I ran at RIW a few months ago.

Second round I ended up getting matched up against Phildo right away, which I was bummed about. Here I am driving 4 hrs to play someone I play all the time back home. Oh well, at least I knew it’d be a good match… Or so I thought. He was running his Buzzsaw + 4 Academies + HR w/ Swarm… A list I’ve seen him play (and lost to) all too often. He setup in the NW corner, so I setup in the SE corner, trying my best to force his shuttle in through the asteroids.

I made my first mistake on the opening salvo, I measured for a TL from Hobbie on the lead academy, and immediately regretted not target locking the Shuttle (who was approaching pretty much from due west, while the academies were due north, and I was coming from the SE). But oh well, it is what it is. I Roark’d Biggs up to 12, and had him shoot at the lead TIE and do no damage. Then the return volley from HR and a TIE did a damage or two to Biggs. I literally spent 3 minutes trying to decide if I wanted to double stress the lead TIE or single stress the shuttle. I ended up going with the shuttle, with the logic that I knew it was going to do a full stop and then still have all of me in arc… Instead, I was hoping the 1 forward I was forcing it to do would be enough for me to get everyone out of arc, which almost worked, but when I was planning maneuvers I realized that Roark was going to be stuck in arc at R1, so at the end of the day, I wished I’d gone after the TIE instead. Needless to say, my unmodified dice failed to do any damage to the shuttle… Go figure. But my A wing did get a damage or two in, but Roark was out of range of ionizing, so he didn’t do anything. Biggs got slaughtered by the TIEs and shuttle. Phildo won that round.

Next round I knew exactly where the shuttle was going to be, and I figured that I could zoom past it, along with most of the TIEs, and have a good shot on the back row without getting shot at… I then realized that Roark couldn’t clear R1 from the shuttle, he was likely to also be action denied from the TIEs and just sitting there. So I abandoned that plan and decided to slow roll it and get some good R1 shots in on the TIEs before they could shoot back. But go figure, my dice once again let me down and nothing died. Meanwhile, Hobbie fell victim to his swarm. I wasn’t long for the world now.

A glimmer of hope occurred though when he forgot to set a dial for his shuttle, which allowed me to select a maneuver for him, which I did a 3 bank right, putting him about half an inch from the edge of the board (and stressed), essentially killing the shuttle. The A wing then killed a TIE, so now it was down to 4v2… I was thinking I could pull this off. The next round time was called, and I knew that in order to pull the upset, I’d have to have Roark kill and Academy (who had 1 health)… And the A had to kill HR. Well, the A did what it was supposed to do, taking out a 1hull HR before it could take its shot on Roark… And then Roark failed to kill the 1 hull TIE. While I was momentarily ahead (but not enough for the full win) the TIE then turned around and killed Roark (who only had 1 hull), so then it was 3 very injured academies vs. the full health Green, and he got the full win. I didn’t mind losing this match because I know Phildo is one of the better players out there, and realistically, the only reason I had a chance was because he forgot to assign a dial.

Next round I played a complete noob. He was flying Lando w/ Gunner and two Daggers… and probably something else I’m not remembering. He had NO FREAKIN CLUE how to play, nevertheless how to play his squad. He was barrel rolling at all the wrong times, and focusing when he should barrel roll. It’s not even worth going into a report on this guy because the match was totally pathetic. He 1 rounded Biggs, and killed Hobbie the following turn… go go green dice! I did finally kill a dagger, and got the other down to 2 hull, but I basically suicided my Green Wing… I clipped an asteroid by about a mm, and of course, THAT’s when I roll a hit. And the way I clipped it, I was forced to clip it again to get off, and I roll ANOTHER hit… Then his B wing took a R3 through the asteroid shot at my A, rolling a hit crit blank… and I rolled evade, focus, focus, blank… but since I didn’t have an action due to clipping the asteroid, I couldn’t avoid the crit… which was a direct hit (this was the 3rd time thus far that I’d pulled a direct hit to finish off a ship btw). So that was my bad, but I’d already lost before that happened. 1-2 and feeling pathetic. Just to make it worse, Torresse tells me that the guy that just beat me was the only guy that his girlfriend has ever beaten… And I’ve seen her play… It’s not pretty. I’m half thinking about quitting at this point and driving home Saturday night. But I decide to stick it out.

Next round was against Krassis w/ HLC, Omicron w/ EU, APL, Vader, and Omicron w/ EU, APL. He setup in the N, pretty much in the asteroid lanes, so I accept that and setup on the S, because I liked the way the asteroids were setup – if everything goes according to plan, he’ll have to do some fancy flying in order to actually do anything beyond the initial attack… and being someone that was 1-2, I was confident he didn’t know how to do that. But I didn’t really get to find out ever. Krassis one shot Biggs at R3 with HLC (he rolled hit hit hit blank, rerolled it to a crit… I rolled blank blank and drew yet another direct hit)… And then Hobbie was killed from the two shuttles… Up until this point, I had rolled 1 non-blank evade between Biggs and Hobbie… and that one evade saved me a hit which was negated by the direct hit that still killed Biggs earlier in the afternoon… My dice were not my friends up until this point. Now, with my Green and Roark against two full health shuttles, and a 7 health BH, I had my doubts about being able to win… But I did do some nice flying for the first few turns to deny him any shots, while my A wing brought the BH down to 3 hull. At this point, I ended up deciding to bite the bullet and fly Roark into a shuttle (otherwise the shuttle would have a R1 on him)… But that’s when I realized that he has both EU and APL, which are both Modifications… So I call the TO over, and the kid tries to argue that the APLs haven’t had an effect in the game up until this point, and if he just doesn’t make me roll for damage, it’d be like they were never there, and he can continue the slaughter. I argued that I planned my maneuvers around the fact that APL existed, nevertheless he has an illegal list, so it really doesn’t matter if it “affected” the game… the TO agreed with me, and gave me the match win. We decided to play the rest of the game out just for S+G, not even removing the APLs… But one turn later and he decided he was too pissed to play and picked up. 2-2, but still feeling like #@$^

The 5th round was against a 6 TIE swarm, but a weird one at that, Mauler w/ VI, HR w/ Determination, BS, DC, BSP w/ VI, BSP w/ DTF. I gave him init so I could see where he would setup his BSP w/ DTF, which would likely be where he setup everyone. And it went straight N in an asteroid lane. So I setup in the SE, allowing him to go through the asteroids to meet me, but required him to maneuver to do so. This guy didn’t really seem to know what he was doing either – he failed to utilize his higher PS to BR effectively out of arc / line up a shot for himself. The game started with Biggs rolling hit hit crit on HR, and HR rolling evade evade blank (had a F token)… and then drawing a pilot crit and discarding it… Not a good start! But Biggs did manage to survive (he rolled a few evades for the first time!) the first round, and I think I did a few damage but didn’t kill anything. Next turn I debated with K turning my X wings behind him, but decided against it, which turns out, was the better move… even though I ionized 1 of them and stressed another, he still chose to K turn the 3 others (and BS who did that to chase down my flanking A) in the main group… so by not K turning mine, I ended up behind him… and the only thing with a shot were the two I stressed/ionized. I tore through Mauler and HR, while Biggs got killed. Roark managed to ionize DC (I went for him because Roark didn’t have any focus token to modify anyways, and DC had just K turned, so I figured that was as good as ever to go for him). Backstabber was annoying the heck out of my A wing, taking 3-4 dice shots on him, but the A wing was doing too much damage to the rest of his squad to give up on that… plus, he was F+E every turn, so he wasn’t getting much damage through.

Continuing on, my dice turned hot! He ended up not being able to kill anything else, but it really wasn’t all dice. He was chasing my A wing with a BSP w/ VI, who was F+E every turn and just taking pot shots elsewhere. Meanwhile, I was outmaneuvering him such that no one else had shots on my X / HWK. And he was getting visibly frustrated with the fact that he couldn’t do any damage while I was doing significant damage to his TIEs. When I did finally polish off the board, his face was beat red in anger, and didn’t even bother to shake my hand afterwards. I wish I knew whether the guy rage quit or continued on to the 6th round.

My last match of the night was against Rinehart, playing Garven, Red, Tarn and Dagger w/ AdvS. While I didn’t know it at the time (though I suspected it) we were both already eliminated from the top 8, so it was nice to play a friendly face for SnG to close the night out. He setup on the NW of the map across from my A wing, so I took the SE with the rest of my forces. The A wing did a 1 turn right followed by 1 turn left in order to stall a bit so it didn’t get crushed before everyone else was in range. The rest of my forces ended up going 4 straight followed by 3 bank left + 3 bank left to do a long swooping turn inwards, with Biggs hiding behind an asteroid. Then the next maneuvers sent my A wing right into his formation with a 5 straight, F+E, and denied the red and Garven actions. It also denied Garven a shot on all of my X wings, forcing him to shoot at the A wing or Roark, I think he chose Roark. We traded some damage, and Roark finished off his Dagger with an ion shot, so I ended up winning the engagement. The next turn, I zoomed Hobbie in, but slow rolled with Biggs, keeping him at R3 and behind the asteroid (which was closer to him than Biggs) and did a 1 left with the A, keeping the stress, but preventing him from getting any actions with the Red or Garven again. I managed to severely wound the red including an ion shot, which would land it on the asteroid. Biggs was down to 1 health. So for the next turn, I once again slow rolled Biggs, who was now staring down said asteroid, but I figured that it would be okay since he was going to get dead… Tarn broke off to the left chasing down Roark (who was also injured… he took a hit/crit early in the game before Biggs could cover him that just happened to be a direct hit (go figure) and was down to 2 hull). Tarn failed to do any damage to Roark, while Roark managed to ionize him going off at a weird angle. Garven failed to do a single point of damage on a point blank Biggs, while I pulverized what was remaining of the Red. From here, we were both laughing and complaining about the dice, they clearly favored me, which while led to a decisive victory, made the game less fun for both of us.

I pulled Biggs out with a 2 turn left, disengaging and avoiding the asteroid. From there on out, he just flew around the boarder of the play area. Likewise, Roark with his 1 hull made sure that he was staying out of arcs. So I had the Green chase down Tarn while Hobbie chased down Garven. Hobbie ended up killing Garven after doing a 4K that put him within a base length from fleeing the battle, and the Green had no problem chasing down Tarn, especially with the occasional ion shot from Roark. It ended up being a full victory 100-0, but not a fun victory. I outmaneuvered him in the opening salvo with the A wing, but beyond that, neither of us played particularly better than the other, and the dice decided the game.

Heading into the final battle I was in 12th, so I figured I had an outside chance of getting bumped up to 8th if I won… Turns out, that no one else I played throughout the day won their final match, and I slipped from the top 1/3 of my point group down to very last spot in my point group, ending in 14th. Turns out, if everyone I played had won (and nothing else changed) I would have still ended up in 9th, 2 SoS points out of 8th. That all being said, my winning the final match was important. Phildo ended up sneaking into the top 8 at 4-2, with a 4 point SoS over 9th. And my victory in the last match gave him 5 SoS points. So had I lost, he would not have represented Michigan in the Top 8, and then again in the top 4.

All in all, I feel like this was one of my worst days of playing in general. I made a critical mistake with target priority against Phildo, I killed my own A wing against a noob, I only beat a triple big base due to disqualifying him, I did outfly a mid-tiered player with a poor choice of swarm list, and then had hot dice against Rinehart… So I don’t feel like I earned any victories, and the ones I got were not hard fought.

i'll end up posting up a tourney report in the main report thread. Granted, i didn't win ( went 3-3), but if nothing else it's helpful to me and others maybe as to what happened, what to do...or more importantly what NOT to do.

never mind what I posted, You were talking about number of rounds, not time limits...my bad.

Wish your dice were more co-operative....sorry my technique did not work for you....

Anyone want to do an epic game tomorrow at RIW? Or do you want to wait another week for the Tantive IV?

Tantive should be out tomorrow from what I've heard, but I don't intend to buy one right away, so tomorrow would be fine for me.

Does the Tantive have anything in it similar to the Transport for the other ships, or is this all just for the Tantive?

4 crew cards for standard play... R2D2, C3PO, Han Solo, Leia Organa... All are kinda marginal... but who wouldn't want R2D2 on Chewy?

R2-D2 on chewy is kinda ridiculous.

Nevermind, now that I look at it, I was looking at a card that wasn't real.

Actually, I'm looking at the lists of things that needs to get done before we book it for the weekend, and I might have to skip out on RIW tomorrow. I'm hoping to get in a galactic cup game tonight, in which case I wouldn't be able to make RIW tomorrow. But if that doesn't happen and I make progress in the world of life, the probability of me making it out tomorrow dramatically increases.

Edit: Yup, not making it out tonight.

Hey Thursday Night RIW X-Wing Crew...

I won't be making it out tonight...things to get done prior to the holiday weekend...So I will see y'all next week.

Hope you all have an excellent Memorial Weekend!!

Sounds good. I think I'll probably take the night off as well then. Have a good weekend. everyone

I guess it's a good thing i didn't angle to show up then...hehe. J/K

On an unrelated note, when is the RIW assault tourney supposed to be? I've been cleared to attend only 1 event so it's either going to be either RIW or Shenanigans.

RIW is on the 31st.

I won't be able to swing by Eternal Games tonight because of family stuff.

Does anybody want to get together on like Wed. night or some other night and get a little more practice in?
