Any SE Michigan games?

By Johdo, in X-Wing Organized Play

Hello, I'm new. Just buying into Xwing. I'm on the east side and interested in coming to some events and seeing what seasoned play looks like and what it will require to get into tourneys. Saw some of the details but not very into the scene, what does RIW stand for?

RIW Hobbies. http://riwhobbies.net/

Thanks for the quick rundown on the local game scene and the heads up on the Facebook group. Looking forward to trying out the full game :)

Welcome to the group JP. I live in Canton too. It's great in the sense that it's like the central location to all of these places - they're all 20-30min drives. Here's a summary of all that's going on (to my knowledge) in the area (so you don't have to dig through the 21 pages to find it all).

Standing game nights

Thursdays 6pm - RIW in Livonia

Saturday 2pm - Fun4All in Ypsi (though it's cancelled this week due to a Magic release on Saturday)

Tuesday 6pm? - Shenanigans in Taylor

Tourneys

Saturday 2/8 1pm - Pandemonium in Garden City (Organized Play prize support)

Saturday 3/1 2pm - Big Kidz Games in Grand Rapids (Store Champ)

There's also a facebook page "X-Wing Michigan" I believe I'm the only one active in both, so I try my best to cross post everything. Let us know if you have any questions.

A little bit farther out is Cool City Games in Port Huron

Game nights on Thursday at 6pm

Tourney ever third Saturday at4pm

I'm likely out for Shenanigans tomorrow, I have to drive my mother to a funeral in Hazel Park, and I'm not sure I'll be back in time.

I might stop by Shenanigans for a game or two after work, but I'm not going to spend all night there like we do at RIW.

I'll be up there at Shenanigans tomorrow. My stay will be based on the mood, however i am looking to get as much practice as i can before this Sat's tournament. So expect to see ALOT of the same squad from me. ;)

As long as my squad consistently beats yours, then that's fine =P

Scratch that, no shenanigans for me tonight.

I'm assuming somebody is planning on showing up to RIW? I might prebuild 2 lists since I want to keep playing the one that I've been using, and same time, try a few tweaks to it, and at the same time, try something completely different. BAH!!! Need. Moar. X wing.

In other news, RIW got their store champ kits in the mail today, so they will indeed be running one, just need to determine when now.

Provided nothing tragic occurs, i'll be there tomorrow. I have a few ideas i am toying with in prep for Saturday...

List me as questionable for tomorrow. Will it just be Johdo and Khyros there? Every time I come there seems to be an odd number of players...

It always seems to be odd number of players. :(

Bring a friend!

Excuse me, but I'm using this thread as a test for my new sig... Thoughts?

X-wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing. And i assume it means you have 4 of each?

Well, 5 of the X... I wasn't sure if it looked representative to others or not. Someone here has done it for the TIEs, and I think it looks much better.

I'm not going to be able to make it out tonight. I'll see you guys at the tourney on Saturday!

For the tournement tomorrow, what did do people normally start showing up? Should I plan on being there at least an hour early? Not really sure what I will need to do beforehand to sign up, etc. and how much time it takes.

No, 15 minutes should be fine. 30 min would be the max, people will be there early so you can talk and socialize, but if you have the squad already picked out, all you have to do when you get there is pay the TO, who will give you 2 sheets, one you put your name on and that's about it. The other you fill out your squad list.

Then all you have to do is assemble your squad, and by that i mean put the ships on the pegs, and the cardboard in the base really. If you have all of your tokens and cards already pulled together (which I recommend since I also recommend leaving unnecessary stuff in the car / at home) then you need <5min to set up, and <5 min to fill out papers. A pen is a nice thing to bring btw. I recommend bringing some kind of tray or something because you will be moving from table to table all day, so you need some way to transport your minis. I also recommend leaving your extra stuff in your car so your not toting around all of your imp stuff as you play rebels.

Then when the tourney begins, the TO will assign you to an opponent and a table, you'll move your tray over there, shake hands with the guy (I don't think I've come across a single lady that plays in our local area... we should fix that!) tell each other what you're running, and then transfer from your tray to the table (or leave it on the tray if it all fits nicely). And start to play. If you're fast, you might get a few minutes of extra time, which really will only matter if a swarm is in play, which kinda negates the fast setup =P.

Good games last night Johdo. I'm going to give you the spiritual win on that last one - there was no reason for my A wing to out live your 2 bombers and 1 tie. Looking back at the games, its still hard for me to decide which I like better. Game 1 you won but I'm thinking it was more because you constantly misjudged your moves, blocking yourself, and in turn blocking me. And seeing as my squad was setup to action pass, that killed it.

But the second one you messed up big time with Turr, which really changed the dynamic of the game completely. Poor guy didn't stand a chance.

And then game three, I royally F'd up. And I've decided that Y w/ EU is not as good as I was hoping. I might have to play around with Y w/ EU again at some point, but for now I'll put it on the back burner. I just hope I didn't waste all of my good rolls on that game =P

Well, after playing against the rebel captive and the recon spec w/ seismics... I'm thinking you might be better with gunner. I know you're concerned about it being wasted on B and Y wings, but with the way you roll........ Plus, there should still be some squads of imps, that the gunner should be useful against.

Agreed...lots of takeaways from those games for sure. I'll just chalk up my poor moves to trying to play after a long day at work ;), and I will gladly accept a spiritual win knowing that my win in the first game has a very large asterisk next to it. A wash of sorts.

You are correct. Losing Turr so early really killed the flow of that game for me and thus expedited the downward spiral. Lesson learned at the very least.

Y with EU was rather interesting. I am not so sure it was terrible, as there were times it could have blocked. Add on to that the Ion and whoever bumped you becomes irrelevant. Probably not the greatest addition to a Y, but i would argue certainly not the worst.

ya know...you may be onto something with the rolling... Gunner just might prove his worth despite my dice's mission to get me to quit. I may need to get on my dice drop quest here soon to ween out the failures. :)

Or, on the flip side - you could spend those 5 points, and roll like a king. And never use gunner. And it would still be the best way to spend 5 points.

I do think I'm going to switch back to Biggs over Garven though. Maybe it was just how I was flying, but having two guys that are reliant on actions seemed to put me at a disadvantage. This way Dutch can fly where ever the frack he wants (thanks turret) and give a TL, and Biggs can fly where ever the frack he wants and force bad shots on him.

I would gladly spend 5 squad points for the ability to improve my rolls...

I know from my side of the table, i hate Biggs. I want to be able to shoot at who i want, and Biggs ruins that plan.
