It was nice seeing so many new faces at the tourney today. I hope to see you guys again either on Thursday at RIW or 2 weeks from now at Pandemonium for the next tourney.
Any SE Michigan games?
How did the tourney go? good turn out? who ended up winning?
The weather hampered the turn out, but there were several new people that showed up. Hopefully we can convert them to regulars! I ended up winning, going 2-1, but the other 2-1 had a modified win against me so he only had 8 points to my 10. The store was real chill with us playing and seems fine with us setting up a Tuesday thing there if anyone wants to spear head it. Personally, 1-2 days of X wing as it is are all I can afford to do, so putting another night together isn't something I can support.
Regarding the Feb 8th tourney at Pandemonium, there might be a slight hang up, I'll keep you guys in the loop as to it's status. Apparently when I asked to run one on Feb 1st, and they said it was busy and recommended the second sat of the month, they meant the second sat in jan. And I meant the second sat in Feb. So apparently they setup for a few weeks ago, and now they're pissed off at me for not showing up. So we'll see if that can get sorted out or if someone else will have to be the point contact for Pandemonium.
So, I should be at RIW this Thursday, and it sounds like I may have convinced some of the guys at the tourney to show up as well (Feel free to make yourselves known if you're reading btw). How bout you guys?
Also, I would like to give Vassal a try, but I'm a bit intimidated by it and would like to play a few games with people I know first to get the hang of how to use the interface. Any of you guys up for giving it a go one of these nights?
Provided no more surprises for me, i'll make it Thursday as well.
I have considered giving Vassal a try, but i'm not exactly sure how it works. I'll guinea pig it with you if you like. just need to figure out how to DL, install, and configure. rumor is there are videos online that walk you through it.
Yeah, I have it all setup, and watched the videos awhile back, but the audio was horrible, and the fact that I couldn't try it out (since you have to be in a game in order to do so) means that I need a guinea pig. I tried doing OCTGN for the LCG and it was quite the experience. The GF was totally turned off from it.
Okay, the Feb 8th is confirmed to be on.
Pandemonium
Garden City, Mi
$5 entry
100 point
1PM Start
FFG Organized Play prize support
Based on facebook, it looks to be a large turnout.
have to start planning for that. did they ever say how many rounds of swiss before top cut?
Umm... I'm going to go ahead and say 3 rounds.
For 16 players, that would give "best case" scenario of the following
Round 1 - 8 wins, 8 losses
Round 2 - 4 2 win teams, 8 1 win teams, 4 0 win teams
Round 3 - 2 3 win teams, 6 2 win teams, 6 1 win teams, 2 0 win teams
So... until there are quite a few more than 16, there really isn't a huge need for a cut to the top. I could see doing a "tie breaker" championship game if needed.
If it is expanded to 24 players, here's what the scenario looks like
Round 1 - 12 1 wins, 12 0 wins
Round 2 - 6 2 wins, 12 1 wins, 6 0 wins
Round 3 - 3 3 wins, 9 2 wins, 9 1 wins, 3 0 wins
So even that would likely not "require" a cut to top as it's unlikely that all 3 of 3 win teams had full wins, so one of them will likely be at 13 points or something, coming in 3rd.
At the flat land games tourney, there were 16 of us, and there ended up only being 1 person with 3 full wins. Oddly enough, 2nd and 3rd were 2-1 at 10 point full wins. So that means that the other 3-0 person (because there has to be one unless there's a draw in the draw in the 3rd game) must have had 3 mod wins since he didn't come in 2nd.
What I don't like about Swiss tourneys is often you get the top 2-4 playing each other in the final round, and the loser to the champ doesn't typically come in 2nd. Though I suppose the SoS is in his favor (being that he lost to someone that went 3-0, and presumably played someone that was 1-1 in the second round... so he's 4-2 to start with, and then whether his first opponent did well or not determines whether he goes 7-2 or 4-5).
This doesn't come into play that often regarding straight up wins. But once you start taking into account modified wins, you can end up with someone who was outside of the top 4 heading into the final game that ends up in the top 4. For example, 1-2 are at 10 points, 3-4 are at 8 points, 5-8 are at 5 points and who cares about the rest.... The two guys that have won outright every game play each other. And it's a **** close match, 2 gets a modified win, putting him at 13, and 1 is at 10. 3 dominates 4, getting a full win, putting him at 13 points. 4 stays at 8. 8 dominates 5, putting him at 10, and 5 at 5. 6 and 7 are close, with 6 edging out a win.
So, your final standings are / can be:
1st: player 3 w/ 13 points SoS 5-4 - played 13 (1-2), 4 (2-1), 8 (2-1)
2nd: player 2 w/ 13 points SoS 3-6 - played: 16 (0-3), 12 (1-2), 1 (2-1)
3rd*: player 8 w/ 10 points SoS 5-4 - played 5 (1-2), 9 (1-2), 3 (3-0)
5th**: player 6 w/ 10 points SoS 4-5 - played 7 (1-2), 10 (1-2), 3 (2-1)
6th**: player 1 w/ 10 points SoS 4-5 - played 2 (3-0), 9 (1-2), 15 (0-3)
7th: player 5 w/ 5 points
8th: player 7 w/ 5 points (this actually probably isn't true - he probably falls out of the top 8, but for this example who cares)
So here you have the top two guys going head to head, and it's a **** close match, that results in neither of them winning the tourney. And the loser could easily end up out of the top 4. And btw, FFG doesn't actually have any rules for determining the tie breaker between 3 and 4, and 5 and 6. In this case it doesn't seem to matter since prize support for 3/4 and 5/6 is the same. But what if it was between 4/5? Which would be reasonable, especially if there's not 2^n players. Herm... I think I'll post this in the main forums and get opinions on the FFG scoring system.
Edited by KhyrosFor those planning to play on Feb 8th, i had a few questions.
I am very new to the game and have only played a handful of times with my wife but really enjoy it. I want to give a tournament a try, mainly to get experience playing with others who have more experience and try to learn tactics, etc. from it. Also wouldnt mind getting some of the game night participation goodies that come with it as well (i.e. alternate art cards, acrylic tokens, etc.) if they are offered.
I was going to attend the tourny last Sat, but as I am about an hour away and the weather wasnt great, i decided not to make the drive.
My question is, given my low level of experience and the large expected turnout for the one on the 8th, should i plan on trying to make it? I dont expect to win the thing, obviously, however i dont want my inexperience and potentially slower that other's play (not sure I am slower since i havent played with others yet) to upset more experienced player during a tournament.
Also, given my distance from these stores, coming for regular game nights isnt really an option for me, especially during the wee with work, hence the reason im looking at a weekend event to play in instead.
Any advice, comments would be appreciated and please feel free to tell me i should get more experience first before entering a tournament. Again, i dont expect to win but still think it would be a fun experience and hopefully allow me to improve my skills as well.

Definately come. And bring the wife! The X wing gaming community is a laid back friendly community that loves welcoming new comers. We're all here to have fun first and foremost. Any special goodies just make it all that much better. No one is going to be upset if you're "slower," we all play at different speeds. I might recommend not running a 7 or 8 TIE swarm then, but even then, everyone expects those games to go slower.
Where do you live? It's possible that there's a group that plays closer to home. Advice - play often and play with as many different people as you can. If they do a cut to top 4 or whatever, stick around and get some extra games in while those are going on. Talk to people before, between and after the rounds. You can learn quite a bit reading on the forums, quite a bit more from talking in person, and tons more from playing.
But yes, please come out. Please bring the wife. And we all look forward to meeting you and having fun playing X wing!
Thanks for the reply. I will definitely plan on coming out. Unfortunately the wife works weekends so won't be able to make it.
And I wouldn't even attempt a large ie swarm until I have a lot more experience.
I live in New Baltimore and I believe there is a shop that is starting Tuesday night games so I will be trying to make some of those.
Again, thanks for the reply and invite and barring any problems I will plan to be there on the 8th.
new Baltimore? Shenanigans is the Tuesday night one that I'm aware of. I won't make it there this week, but maybe next week.
Where is Shenanigans? I was thought I had seen a post on this forum about Gamers Gauntlet starting a Tuesday play night.
I'm not familiar with gamers gauntlet. Shenanigans is in Taylor on the corner of Goddard and pardee.
just checking in to see if we are still a go for this evening?
I am. I'm heading straight there from work, which has been rather slow today. If that stays like that, then I might actually be there early. My guess is 4pm will hit and I'll all of a sudden have a gazillion things to do though.
Hello, another SE Michigan player here (Canton) . I've only played a few times with my kids so far using the simple rules, but I'll have to check out one of these gaming nights to get more experience.
Welcome to the group JP. I live in Canton too. It's great in the sense that it's like the central location to all of these places - they're all 20-30min drives. Here's a summary of all that's going on (to my knowledge) in the area (so you don't have to dig through the 21 pages to find it all).
Standing game nights
Thursdays 6pm - RIW in Livonia
Saturday 2pm - Fun4All in Ypsi (though it's cancelled this week due to a Magic release on Saturday)
Tuesday 6pm? - Shenanigans in Taylor
Tourneys
Saturday 2/8 1pm - Pandemonium in Garden City (Organized Play prize support)
Saturday 3/1 2pm - Big Kidz Games in Grand Rapids (Store Champ)
There's also a facebook page "X-Wing Michigan" I believe I'm the only one active in both, so I try my best to cross post everything. Let us know if you have any questions.

Yup, 6-10pm on Tuesdays
And Welcome! Looking forward to seeing you at gamenight!
Edited by JohdoAs long as we're on the topic, I'm likely going to miss this coming Thursday at RIW, but I'll be going to Shenannigans on Tuesday. The week after I should be back on with RIW again.
Welcome to the group JP, and I look forward to getting in a game or two with you.

Says the guy planning on rolling all of his dice 100 times to see which ones are most likely to roll hits/evades. Tell me Johdo - if one rolls hits 49% of the time, but focuses 27%, and another rolls hits 51% but focuses 24% which one are you more likely to take?

As primarily an Imperial player, i would take the 51 / 24. knowing Focus would come up less, then i would be more inclined to take Evade/Barrel Roll/Boost knowing that Focus isn't coming.
Not to mention with my luck of the dice, i'm better off with the sure thing everytime...
Thanks for the quick rundown on the local game scene and the heads up on the Facebook group. Looking forward to trying out the full game ![]()
