"Why are we arguing about the definition of a miniatures game?" Well, it's not like we have all that much to argue about in here. We've kind of run out of info on the whole restructuring except to feed the panic, and why panic when you can be pedantic instead?

Profusely pontificating possibilities, propelling panic, postulating pedantic points, preferring prophecies, per pandemic problems? Praytell player, Por que no?
Yeah, I think what upsets me most is the sudden big shift with no communication besides a generic interview and a press release. There’s no immediate closure. There’s no Head designers goodbye stream, or article talking about how they knew this was coming and have been collaborating with Atomic Mass games for X months, there isn’t even a goodbye/well wish post from FFGMatt to grace these forums.
there is just the sudden and complete ceasing of Star Wars FFG as a whole, in a year that already denied us a farewell tour, this feels like an extra kick in the groin. Asmodee could not have botched this any harder if they tried IMO.
And in the interim that leads to 2 things: mass speculation and nerd rage. Unfortunately the Atomic Mass people are going to catch allot of the flak for it, when it’s not their fault this happened. I feel bad for them being caught in the middle.
bottom line: As long as my plastic crack keeps getting delivered EVEN during a pandemic its ok, the game is OK... Both Armada and X-wing have plastic crack coming out.. I only play those two so dont know about the others.
However as a player of STAW as well I can tell you the actions of what happens when a game dies or is being ignored by the manufacturer.. It gets little to NO press release as they dont want to bring any attention to the game they are ignoring by not making anything new for it and constantly pushing back releases by YEARS..They release UN-Painted overstock items and sell them as is as "DEEP-CUTS" with out cards etc. to try and scalp some more money from unsuspecting folks who actually think they are NEW and IMPROVED..lol (Not actually a NEW release but a way to make folks THINK they are releasing new stuff) but are actually just cleaning house.... So yeah i think X-wing is fine, also having new series coming out doesn't hurt.. although that didn't help STAW..ok rant over..lol

I mean, it’s 2020! But seriously, how would Asmodee have convinced the developers they were essentially firing to make a “goodbye stream,” or do any community outreach for them? How does that conversation go, exactly?
“Say there, you know that highly successful Star Wars game which you and your team created all those years ago? The one to which you’ve devoted literally thousands of hours of your life, that made us untold oodles of cash? Yeah, well, we’re taking you off the project and handing it over to another subsidiary in the corporate umbrella. New project lead and everything. Yeah. So, you’re kind of unnecessary now. No, there’s nothing we can do... this is coming from corporate. You understand. But hey, before you clean out your desk, how about you do a nice little farewell video for the fans? Tell them how exciting it is for X-Wing to be moving to AMG? We’ll edit out the part where you fall to your knees in anguished tears in post-production.”
I’m not sure I’d even want to read a post from some poor dev about how, “It’s Been So Awesome Collaborating With The Guys Who Are Set To Take My Job, And I Was Told By My Corporate Bosses That I Had To Tell You How Exciting It Really Has Been Or I Won’t Get A Good Reference, So Here Goes.” That sounds awful. I’m pretty sure there isn’t a great way that Asmodee could have handled this, except to, y’know, not fire anyone to begin with, but it’s quite likely that the decision was made by some faceless group of suits who don’t play with plastic spaceships... they’re too busy toying with people’s lives instead.
Just remember: when you embrace a system wherein the primary motivation is profit and efficiency, it’s guaranteed to make people’s lives better! Yaaay capitalism! Let’s spread this $#!% everywhere. People will love it!
We now return to your regularly scheduled dystopian nightmare.

I don't want goodbyes and farewells either. That isn't productive.
I do want to know whether I should I expect the pre-ordered X-wing and Armada product I've paid for on time and whether or not the informally announced Armada product that was alleged for Q1 can be expected. I need to know this while I still have time to cancel my pre-orders because I don't want the December Armada product without the Q1 Armada product.
I'd also like to know if we can in fact expect the points updates for the new stuff (if its coming) in either pdf format or the official squad-builder? I don't need long-term or even short-term. I need some now-term information.

A game like this wouldn't be possible in a different system. It's sad they were fired, but what the devs could do now is start their own company, make even better games and tomorrow become bigger than FFG. That happens all the time, actually.

I mean, you’re completely wrong, but if you’d like some more Kool-Aid, by all means, have at.
A game like this would be totally possible under any number of economic systems. Capitalism has potential, the problem is that it embraces raw profit as the primary driving factor in evaluating success and worthiness. A more ideal system would be one which prioritizes human happiness and wellness and societal health, with profit as a secondary goal. Basically, capitalism doesn’t care who’s getting rich, as long as *someone* is getting rich. And that doesn’t usually lead to a well society, long-term.
Economic mobility is one of the great myths of our time (at least, if you’re American). These guys might leave and start their own company, sure. But they aren’t going to be bigger than FFG. They won’t have a lucrative licensed IP to milk. They won’t have even a small fraction of the capital. In fact, it’s quite likely that any remotely gaming-related idea they had while working for FFG which they happened to mention to anyone might not even legally belong to them anymore. And all the talent they’d love to draw from? The guys they used to work with and would love to hire? Even if those guys wanted to leave, they’re likely bound by non-compete agreements.
Nah, man. The sort of thing you’re talking about doesn’t “happen all the time.” It happens very rarely, rarely enough that when it does happen, it creates a very compelling story, which keeps everyone believing that it “happens all the time.”
Well Atomic Mass Games was started by people who left Privateer Press and wanted to do things better. They were able to convince Asmodee that they would fit well under their umbrella and get funded to create Crisis Protocol.
So I think that is why our attention is drawn to the "it happening all the time" especially in this case.
But I do agree, that just because they were able to do it, does not mean anyone else would be just as successful. They happened to be at the right place at the right time, and have the right industry connections.
If y'all wanna get deep into the weeds on capitalism vs socialism vs anarchy etc, please take it to another thread. It's better for this one to die than to turn into that rant for the next 6 pages. This battle has been fought to death a thousand times, let's not go at it here.

This. My other big hobby (besides gaming) is playing/singing the blues, and my main forum for that has a strictly-enforced ban on politics/religion/whatever. I get this board doesn't have the same rules but, by all that's holy, at least please take it to the off topic area.
Then kew. 😎 🍻

Thirded. I have my opinions about capitalism and the "alternatives", but I won't rise to the bait and spew it all over a forum about plastic spaceships.
And I finally got into 2.0.
They change edition in the next two years and I'll never spend a penny on Amodee again.

The rules are similar here from what I recall, we're just fairly good at self regulating. We do get the occasional troll in, as we have currently in the OT section, but other than that disagreements over politics and what not tend to hit a threshold and then end up being dropped.
So you're going to spam the thread with posts about the rules governing forums, so that the thread isn't spammed by macroeconomic systems posts.
Irony, anyone?
Asmodee or whoever. Repaints with new pilots and upgrades! That's where the money is. So many ships are lacking a half decent selection that it appears to have been FFG's gameplan. (Back on thread)
Edited by Larky BobbleEh, I don’t have any burning need to discuss economics, I just think A) it’s silly that anyone’s surprised that people who are losing their jobs because of corporate backgammon aren’t popping out here with, “Thanks for the fun, make sure you go check out XWM at AMG!” And B) it’s just patently ridiculous that no other economic model on earth would enable a game of plastic spaceships to exist. With that said, I’m gonna take my semi-leftist economics and dip into another thread, ‘cause this one’s gonna inevitably loop back around to either A) how hard the sky is falling, or B) the technical differences between miniatures and board games and wargames, and I think I’m good on all that. See ya in Squad Lists, where I’m looking for constructive advice on a Sloane/Rampage/TIE Swarm that’s showing early promise!

I think I have an idea as to what to do with all those “F’s” in the other thread.
Having been terminated twice, it is always Abrupt & Unceremonious.
Even had one boss crow on about how he had brought me a cardboard box to clean out my desk, as if that was some sort of olive branch.
Good news is, in the long run getting axed is usually a favor. Best of luck to Mr. Davy in his future pursuits.

Agreed. Been made redundant here twice in three years by the same company. First time a new marketing manager with Big Ideas came in and decided to let my team go. Within six months that same marketing manager jumped ship and the company tempted me back, only to let me go again when Covid hit. Sheeyte happens, I guess.
But yeah, no warnings, token discussion, no apologies or even a thank you. It sucks, but it is what it is.
Having met Alex, his passion for the game and the community absolutely shone through, and the same goes for the rest of the team at FFG. Didn't deserve to be done like this.

This honestly is making me strongly consider whether I want to spend any more money on this game.
It would be pretty easy not to, at this point. There's nothing coming up for the factions I enjoy that I want. I had a passing interest in the Eta-2, but I don't desperately need to have a lot of options for Republic. I haven't played an in person game since the start of the year. My buddy who I played most with has moved to a different country.
There was still stuff I would have bought, bits and pieces here and there. But now I'm just not sure I really want to. The people who made this game aren't going to be involved anymore. I know how that goes.
I can't help but feel this is like 343 taking over Halo from Bungie. I just immediately stopped caring.
I still think a holding pattern is best. After all, everyone has their complaints about how the game has gone in one way or another, and bringing in fresh thinkers could take the game in a positive direction.
But we may have to wait a bit to see whether it tanks, improves, or holds steady.
