Star Wars: Squadrons

OK, at this point @Frimmel I'm just going to say you're having a vastly different in-game experience to me.

Lost the first engagement on Yavin. Got one-shot killed by an Interceptor through over-charged forward focused shields while trying not to joust. Was 0-7 before scoring a point. Game was 20-0 at one point. Basically couldn't get out of the spawn. Have you had that experience?

Nope, not at all Hence "Vastly different game experience". Don't get me wrong, I've had some heavy defeats, but nothing that one-sided.

For the sake of balance...

Angry Joe is flipping out...

So far my biggest gripe against squadrons is playing and completing the campaign in the ridiculously difficult - you're the only target in the mission - difficulty that is is Ace and NOT getting the trophy for it. I did not play for a couple of days after that.

Yeah, your squad mates in single player might be interesting to talk to (the first time at least), but they're about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

As an aside, I haven't really gone back to single player much after the first full playthrough; I don't know if there is a way to skip the briefings and hangar bay conversations entirely and just jump straight into the missions, but if there is, I haven't seen it yet.

You can't skip the briefings and some of the conversations (just look for "briefing" or "hangar" as appropriate to not even enter conversations with squadmates) and you can fast forward through pretty much all of it. Just keep hitting "next phase" in the briefings to fast forward, hit any button in a cutscene and you'll get a prompt to skip, and any conversation with a squadmate has a "leave" option and moves you on.

Ouch. I'd like to give the story a go on Ace difficulty but I won't until they sort out the save bug with the medals so I can get my trophy. Will still try to go through for the do this one thing in mission X for a trophy stuff though.

New Patch notes.

Seems they might have fixed the story medals bug: Fixed an issue where medal earned in the single-player story could be reset after playing other activities (previously fixed on PC)

Not sure if I'm getting better, or others are getting worse, but I had a couple good dogfight matches.. got 8-10 kills and ZERO deaths in an a-wing. Wish I could fly like that in x-wing (miniatures game), though I bounce off asteroids/debris the same amount.

Yep. Liking the shields that don't regen, but you take less damage. Helps out quite a but. And mines. Mines everywhere.

Wait are mines good? I'm so unclear on what's actually good in this game, I think.

I was wondering if A) there were already emerging "best"options B) Would the designers be willing to do balancing patches to the game.

I think there is a plan for a balancing patch but I think we will not see until after they get the ranking and matchmaking issues sorted out. The reinforced hull for TIE Bombers and the Slam engine tend to be pretty good on Empire. With power-shunting you can just keep everything in engines and shunt to weapons as needed for the larger part. As to other "best options" I can't really tell either. I don't know what problems are my loadout/opponent's loadout and what problems are match-making.

What's good really depends on your preferred play style and mode - you'll definitely end up running different builds for Dogfight and Fleet Battles, and different upgrades for each.

For example, @That Blasted Samophlange is recommending the hardened shields on the A-Wing above, personally I prefer the fast regen shields but if you can make it work for you, it's good.

I haven't tried the mines yet, but I've seen people using them to good effect.

There's definitely a limited meta forming - I say limited, because much more depends on your team than it does on your build. Especially in Fleet Battles, where you need to be prepared to switch up your ship depending on the tide of battle.

As @Frimmel points out, Bombers and Y-Wings can be given serious amounts of staying power - it can take four or five seconds of continuous focused fire to take them down. That doesn't sound like much, but bearing on mind you need to keep them in your sights for that duration, while avoiding oncoming fire and obstacles. An assault shield, support ship handing out repairs and shields will bump this further.

I'm currently favouring the "stealth" interceptor builds - Reflec Hull with Targeting Jammer and Scrambler shields on the A-Wing. A stiff breeze is enough to kill them, but they still punch way above their weight by virtue of being difficult to track. Just don't fly anywhere near a capital ship.

Currently one of the best builds is the Super Tanky TIE bomber with a rotary blaster. Don't joust with them.

I like them, if you are jousting you can take drop one just before you fly past an enemy and they crash into it. I love doing that, especially since they take damage from the joust.

Just overcharge shields before doing a joust, or put shields to double Front.

Worth a watch:

Back on the sides not being balanced... I noticed last evening after getting the trophy for ten wins as Empire that the PS4 showed 0.9% for that one and only 0.6% for the Republic ten wins trophy.

The games Ranking system is completely broken so that could be the issue there. I have only dipped my toes into MP (been too busy), however I am not really clamoring for it until things get sorted.

I know we have mentioned not getting story completion trophies. I wanted to point out that it would seem my theory about that being related to medals from story missions being dropped may be correct.

I completed a story on "ace" difficulty. All my mission completion medals were retained and at the end I was awarded the story trophy for each difficulty. Game even shows a couple of medals from replaying a mission on lower difficulty before restarting at ace difficulty.

For me on PS4 it would appear the patch corrected things. YMMV.

100% agree. I want to replay the game, but it is annoyingly cumbersome to replay a mission.

Hopefully, the patch did fix this. I am an achievement/trophy hound.

It seems to be working. I played on Ace and got all the story trophies. I've been going back on "Story" to try and get all the medals. It has been keeping the ones I gained on Ace as "Platinum" and the others as "Bronze." A few of the multi-player trophies I don't think I'm going to get but it looks like all the story stuff at least is in reach at the moment.
