The manor house is small and smart but equally miss-matched - not inelegant (it is the home of a crane samurai, after all) but the riverwards side of the neat rock garden has old, gnarled bonsai trees dotted aesthetically here and there, whilst the side closest to you is merely artfully raked gravel and a few larger stones. The nearest wall of the house looks distinctly newer, as well.
Walking slowly but purposefully up the road towards Aruzhan is a fellow samurai. She is relatively young, wearing armour almost identical to the ashigaru sentries at the village gates - in this case softened slightly by a sky-blue silk sleeveless tabard worn open to knee-length over the top, decorated with stitched cranes on either lapel, and a plain copper hair ornament folding several locks of hair over a very nasty-looking scar across the right-hand side of her jaw. She is carrying her full daisho, and if she is not scowling, she is not smiling either.
"Back to your stalls!" she snaps, and the crowd of heimin who've been milling in the nearby scuttle away into the side-streets or back toward the market square, grumbling as peasants are wont to do.
Drawing herself up several paces in front of Aruzhan, the samurai-ko bows (quite respectfully, given that she is greeting a trio of ronin), but the palm of her hand stays resting - casually but firmly - on the pommel of her katana, and her bow is not deep enough that her eyes leave you for a second.
"Honourable Guests." She says, straightening with a slight creak of armour. "Be welcome, if in peace, to Hiuchiishi Ganpeki Mura. I am Koharu no Bunya sano Asahina, and have the privilege to be Karo to the administrator of this village, Ito no Asahina Sora. I regret it is my duty to demand your purposes here on my Lord's behalf."
GM Notes:
If anyone's got a rank of government or culture, then I'll call it TN0 (i.e. no check required) - otherwise someone roll either skill Recall (Earth) at TN1 - to interpret the names and titles.
Assuming the above, Koharu's name means " of the Fields of the Morning Sun ", an Asahina province nearby to the south-east. The fact that she is pointedly wearing clan colours and heraldry, but announces no lineage save a place-of-origin in her name, suggests she is a Ji-Samurai , a recognised clan samurai and a full member of the Buke, but not one permitted to claim any relationship to one of the Clan's Daimyo's bloodlines. That would imply a status not massively dissimilar to yours.
Her lord's title is similarly unimpressive - the Ito are a Vassal Family of the Asahina, mostly providing Bushi and Yojimbo to the Crane's Shujenga, and a pretty obscure one. Ahruzhan might have encountered one or two whilst visiting Asahina shrines and can be assumed to know the family name but the odds of anyone actually introducing one to her is pretty minimal.
If you've got a vassal family village marshal with a mere ji-samurai for an immediate deputy, you'd expect the place to be a fair way off the beaten track. Which is odd, because that merchant road running right past is a pretty well-beaten track.
Checks
Koharu's not actively hostile but not feeling especially friendly either. If someone's wanting to make diplomatic, I'd call it a TN2 Charm (Water)/Courtesy check, but I'm open to other suggested approaches if someone specifically wants to use one. Don't forget that whatever you try, thanks to Hekasu, you've got a free
kept result to add to the check)
Assuming you succeed, you can use
to "establish an interesting detail" by getting a bit more recent history of the place out of the 'reception committee'
