THE MANDALORIAN

By Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I do find it a little strange that the X-Wings we saw were T-65s, and not T-70s. Obviously any #legendsforever type of whining would say "DisNeY doEsn'T kkNoW theiR oWN cAnon HRhGnRhGnGHRNghR!11one!" but like, it IS a bit strange to me. They weren't in service TOO long after Jakku. So I don't know.

It'd be nice to have a proper timeline as to when exactly the T-70 was introduced. We just know that their service only REALLY lasted... About... I don't know. 15-20 years. MAYBE 25, tops. That's actually even less likely.

15 at least.

Transitioning to new equipment takes time. With the series taking place in the Outer Rim I'm not surprised that a unit in that region would have older, yet proven capable, equipment still. I don't doubt that units stationed closer to more strategically valuable locations are already being equipped with T-70s.

During the artwork scenes in the credits, it appeared the original concept was to have BOTH xwing styles attack the station. Maybe as a way to show the transition was underway.

I could be wrong though, it wasn't on screen long.

Yes, yes! I got the same feeling. It looked like a quest for RPG or an Imperial Assault mission.

With loaded dice.

Watching this, it felt *a lot* like a one-off RPG adventure, at least for the first half or so. Guy meets quest giver, finds a group: brutish dude, knifey girl, shooty dude, techy droid. They go into a dungeon, fight enemies, get into trouble. Then it is turned in its head a bit (nice Alien vibes).

All in all, great fun episode. Loved the OT fashion, too.

Running the "Average roll + mods" D20 variant maybe?

Your getting close! The sketches I’m thinking of were not coloured and predate this a maybe 3 years (?).

It boggles my mind that somehow people have forgotten what episodic storytelling is in this age of streaming.

Modern Star Trek has the opposite problem, a lot of the fans want the current linear storytelling to return to the episodic roots of the franchise.

I have finally gotten used to it with this show. Its was almost jarring at first since that type of storytelling rarely ever happens with TV shows anymore. Heck, even newer sitcoms follow the same storyline over a span of episodes. Normally sitcoms were all episodic.

Really enjoyed the last episode despite the acting of the mercenary crew trying to undermine it at every opportunity. Bill Burr was okay, but man the rest of the lot were just obnoxious.

Binge watching with my daughter and we're liking it so far.

Ain't that cool? Would've loved to see them together onscreen for the first time. Ah well.

I think it came down to Dave Filoni wanting to pilot an X-Wing like the ones from when he was a wee lad.

Just finished our binge watch of the first 6 episodes. "Zero" from episode 6 looks to be a LOM series. I can't find a dang pic of Zero for reference with either a Web search nor on the main SW page (they don't have any characters post episode 4 up on the SW page from what I could see) to link for a visual reference but here is the LOM-Series:

Reminds a lot the LOM series, but it is a little different.

Except there's never been, to my knowledge, an episodic show as aimless and devoid of characters as The Mandalorian , in my subjective opinion.

While you note Star Trek (OT, TNG), we could also point to far more analogous shows at the peak of "western-themed" episodic adventures of one man, like The Rifleman or Gunsmoke. Except all of those shows have things that the Mandalorian lacks -- namely a protagonist with a bit of personality, an ensemble cast of supporting characters (e.g. Spok or Festus, to name just two of many), and a large general setting around which most adventures are shared and grounded (e.g. the Enterprise or Dodge City).

I have nothing against episodic story-telling, but it's worth noting how the Mandalorian is devoid of several features that are common to even the most episodic sorts of shows noted above. Take Firefly , for instance, a thoroughly episodic show about trying to find work and eke by in space. The show succeeded on the character development, dialogue, and heart displayed between the members of the crew--in fact, this was the show, and that's what made it work so well. The Mandalorian , on the other hand, has no recurring characters beyond a mute puppet and a faceless guy with less personality than the puppet. The fact that the two recurring characters are wearing more plot armor than Littlefoot in an installment of The Land Before Time doesn't help with the tension, and the show has already worn the "work for someone, get betrayed, defeat their incompetent yet inevitable betrayal" formula a bit thin, and the fact that 50% of its episodes have already used the trope of "OH NO SOMEONE IS GONNA ATTACK BABY YODA...OMG THE WOULD-BE ATTACKER FALLS DOWN BECAUSE A GOOD GUY SHOT THEM IN THE BACK AT THE LAST SECOND" three times is almost admirable in it's brazen laziness.

But... the show is beautiful and it's still the closest thing to Star Wars we've had in years. Despite all these limitations, I still watch it every weak and am generally entertained at the visual treat, even if I'm rolling my eyes at the reused tropes or "shocking" betrayals. It certainly isn't as amazing or as praiseworthy as people are making it out it to be (a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes is absurdly high for what the show delivers). It's fun, but I can't help feeling like it could be so much more.

Yes I noticed the T-70 in the concept art at the end too. It’s safe to assume they at least considered it but I can accept that X-wings stationed on the fringes of the New Republic are largely older T-65s.

Yeah I noticed that to.

It looks like they had considered using it at first but changed their mind at some point. Its possible that the T-70 props might not have been available due to RoS.
