Koda would love this

As an "unbiased" third party (no one is ever truly unbiased about anything, but in this circumstance I personally have nothing at stake so I at least don't have a conflict of interest)

Originally I warned of this sort of implosion but I was expecting it to be triggered by tramp, and after readING the last 5 pages of posts I fail to see why anyone got upset with @Mychal'el , he asked naive but innocent questions and people interpreted it as sarcasm/trolling. I'd chalk that up as miscommunication due to the nature of the electronic medium (not being able to see facial expressions or hear tone of voice) which amplifies insult. My son was just born otherwise I'd offer to take over gming for the short term. But to get things rolling again i'do advocate handing the gm reigns over to tramp. He is an excellent story teller and as long as Korath is out of commission there is minimal chance of him unfairly favoring his own character. This is coming from someone who has known tramp in real life since 2003, and knows his social defects (everyone is defective in some way, and tramp seems to have overcome some of his personal failings in the last 8 years).

Thanks Elias. But I am still genuinely sorry that I upset anyone.

It's true that I am excessively naive sometimes, but I also can be sarcastic sometimes. It's a bad combination because people can't seem to tell the difference. Don't blame the electronic medium too much, I have the same problem in real life.

I realized now that I shouldn't have tried to vent my frustrations at all. I did try to soften them with light-hearted humor but it still failed miserably.

It doesn't really matter what my intentions were. The damage is done. People are upset. I am responsible for that.

If anyone still thinks I am a troll then I beg for your forgiveness. I abhor the practice of trolling.

Just to be completely clear and honest about my frustrations, they are as follows:

  1. Matt putting zero effort into Role Playing.
  2. Only a handful of Stormtroopers in a First Order military base
  3. Everyone stepping on everyone else's toes
  4. Being treated like a troll

When I was teasing Tramp about the pimp colors on his ship, I wasn't frustrated. I was trying to make him laugh.

1. Ugh listen, I'm sorry about this, I get a notification on my device when you post, so i post when I need to. If you want me to stop that, I'll try.

2. Who says that's all that there was????????

3. I noticed that.

4. I answered some of your questions with chapter numbers you should read. I agree with Elias the only reason I didn't ask those questions is because at the time, there was nobody to ask.

For number one, I'm not talking about frequency of posts. I'm talking about character and story. For example: your first battle scene could have been epic, 8 NPCs suffered a TPK at your hand, and it was glossed over like it was nothing. Your character sheet had zero backstory and when your character spoke it sounded like an OCC post from Matt, not an IC post from Maa't.

I understand if that is just your style. But I play for the narrative and found it frustrating. I don't hate you or anything. I made character art for you to try and help, for goodness sake!

I'm not mad, I just wanted a good story.

Matt is fairly new to roleplaying, how he is playing the character is "par" for his age and rpg experience, or athe least par for me when i was athe that pointment in my life. And to be fair TPKing 8 storm troopers is nothing to his character, and if anyone is to blame for that it's me because I built it. I did help Matt with the build but I didn't work out a narrative backstory with him, that might have helped some. I think what mychal'el was wanting was a detailed narrative blow by blow of how Maa't dispatched the stormtroopers, something that would let you "see" how it played out in a movie or comic book.

Hey guys. I got a request from @Tramp Graphics to act as substitute GM. I'd be okay stepping in if you all want to keep playing, provided that my subbing-in is agreeable to you!

However, I'd first need to know if the group is amenable to shoring some things up in terms of roleplay etiquette and PbP practices (as a group):

1. When asked for dice rolls, the results from orokos.com should be posted In Context (in the IC thread, rather than Out Of Context, in this thread). The "narrative dice," as they're called, fuel the narrative. So it only makes sense for them to accompany your IC posts when appropriate. Thanks for using orokos, by the way. It's a stellar dice roller.

2. I'd like to start using colors in the IC thread to differentiate between "character speech" (carrot), narration (black), and out-of-character/mechanical effects (strong blue) .

  • In the case of the rare thoughts that one thinks to oneself , you can use italics (with no quotation marks) and color it like normal speech, but try to avoid doing this too much, because no one can act directly off this information, unless he or she were using the Sense power on you. So try and keep personal thoughts to a minimum; use them as commentary rather than as character development. Your narrative should serve the game & the group first, not just serve your character.
  • If the speech you're speaking is Shyriiwook/binary/Rodese/Huttese, or anything else that would normally be <subtitled> on screen or show up on someone's datapad translator, <use the angled brackets like these, instead of quotation marks, and color it like normal speech,> so that people will remember you're speaking a language other than Galactic Basic.
  • If all you want to do in a post is talk out-of-character, you should probably use the OOC thread for that rather than creating an all-blue-text post.

3. It would also help if we could all agree to past-tense narration (remember, this all happened "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."), and try to be physically descriptive rather than talking about how your character is feeling . In other words, try to talk about the things that your character did or said , rather than about things he's feeling (unless they're emotions you can physically broadcast , like a human's face going red with embarrassment, or a Bothan's fur rippling with impatience, or a Wookiee snarling with anger, or a Rodian's eyelids quivering with disgust). Again, serving the game by keeping the narrative flowing.

4. Some of you need to flesh out and explain your Motivations (what does your character want?) , Morality (what makes your character tick?) , and Descriptions (what does your character look like & act like?) . Mychal'el (the character), in particular, needs to find an in-character reason to want to join a group of Jedi, or else the character simply won't work as a PC in this group. Call this "the good kind of metagaming." :) This is a remedial measure, since it should have been sorted out in your Session 0 thread. Some of your PCs are missing their Descriptions altogether, and that also needs to be remedied.

5. Last but not least, if it's on your character sheet, I expect you to know how it works! This includes Force powers, talents, your main skills, and any items you might have. If your character is so complicated that you forget or can't remember how all his stuff works, then I'm happy to work with you to scale him down to the point where he becomes playable.

--

Let me know what you think! I know it's a lot to consider, but if you're able to a bit of effort into it, then I think we can turn this ship around. If you like, we can go for a trial period of 1 month (starting whenever we officially re-start the narrative here) and see how we're faring at the end of it.

I'll also need a minimum of four players to commit to the 1 month, and ask that if you'll be away for more than a day or so that you do your best to let us know. I promise the same.

I am generally available to post 3-4 times on weekdays, except Wednesdays through August, when I have my live game. My weekends are always a bit erratic, with band practice, church, and the occasional D&D game, but I will usually be able to get at least one post in on Saturdays and one on Sundays.

As someone new to table top RPGs I feel like your post was exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you.

Although I would love to play my namesake character because I know his personality very well, I'm just not familiar enough with his powers, skills, talents and items yet to play him at this point in his lifetime. It's just too much to take in all at once. Lesson learned!

Plus I don't feel like Mychal'el (the character) would sincerely join this group unless he was forced to do so somehow. From his perspective, for him to approve of rebuilding the Jedi Order, would be negligence at best, hypocritical at worst. And I realize now that this particular game just doesn't support any division of the team's philosophy on this particular subject. They must be united on this motivation.

Plus, anyone who gets too close to him ends up in harm's way and he would never knowingly endanger innocent lives. So maybe he is more suited for solo play.

We could solve these two problems by letting my character sacrifice himself in the very place where he was created, so that billions of innocent lives can be saved. And so the other players can have a smoother, less conflict filled game.

From my perspective, protagonists that disagree on fundamental issues makes for a compelling narrative. I honestly didn't realize that it wouldn't work for an RPG.

I don't have color options

I can do this though

Okay that didn't work, how do you do colors

United in motivation is nice, but not necessary. What's necessary is a reason to get along, despite your differences. Like you pointed out, @Mychal'el , that's some good storytelling.

It just takes some creativity to find it.

Are you guys posting from mobile devices?

Yes

In Chrome in android under the : (3 dots), there's an option to check for request desktop site, which I believe would let you access colors as I'd you were on a desktop/laptop.

It works in new posts on my android phone, by clicking the capital A underlined next to the downward carrot, but I can't go back to add color in my previous posts that I edit

I don't use chrome. I'll find something out

BBCode works on this forum, and is very easy to use. It's the same way we get the dice rolls to show up with pretty pictures from Orokos :) To get colors it's very easy, just surround the text you want to color with the commands to "color=(whatever color you want)" and "/color" (Note that it's the American spelling of "color," not the British way!). The forward slash / is the command to "end" whatever effect you want to end.

So the following text, typed into your post:

Charlie introduced himself to everyone, [color=orange]"Hey guys! My name is Charlie and I will be the most powerful Jedi ever!"[/color]

[color=blue]Am I doing this right, guys?[/color]

Comes out looking like this:

Charlie introduced himself to everyone, "Hey guys! My name is Charlie and I will be the most powerful Jedi ever!"

Am I doing this right, guys?

I do this on my iPhone when I'm typing in the forums and need to put color in...give it a try! I don't want it to be too tedious, so if you can't make it work, we'll figure something else out :) Like Bolding your speech. In fact, Bolding speech is always a good idea, even when using colors. But please for the love of Yoda use quotation marks :)

Yeah, I've been using Bold for speech in the IC thread. The only problem I see with using a specific color to represent speech is the fact the each of us is playing two characters, so having one color being used for both characters could get confusing. I was planning on using two different colored text for my characters (Black for Korath, and blue for Rei).

That would be fine. Let's settle on one color to use for OOC speech though. Blue speech and blue OOC comments wouldn't mix. We can use red or whatever if you prefer.

Or if colors end up being a problem, I suppose we could use (parentheses).

Yes, excellent point. I'm getting writer's block at the moment on this. It may take a bit of brainstorming for me to figure it out.

Maybe he could serve as the Jiminy Cricket of the group, making sure these wide-eyed wanderers don't make the same mistakes that lead the Jedi Order into the Clone Wars and propelled the rise of the Empire.

I don't know, I want to run everything past you guys. I feel like I'm very much lacking in confidence. Especially after the blow out. I'm tired of stepping on people's toes while I incessantly frolic in Star Wars Land.

Also, I still don't know how everything on my character sheet works. But I won't unless I see it in action anyway. But I guess I'm fine with him taking on a more passive role until I figure this game out.

Hello there fellow players. Tramp said I could join. I don't have any experience playing a game on the forums but I understand the rules. My signature character is has only gained 250 xp. Is that enough to be a master?

Before I make an apprentice, how/where will she join the group?

Look at you! Over and above. I appreciate it.
