Zealux Myr's X-Wing Workshop

By ZealuxMyr, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Been working on a lot of lighting mods recently, also done quite a few repaints over the years. Figured I should make one thread to dump them all in.

So I rushed through the conversion mod to get it done got excited and carried away…which means I took zero photos between the above and the lighting test…

Some very nice work all around! The fleets of ships together really look outstanding.

Those T-70s are tops! My fav. is the green one. Going to have to steal that color combo.

Kad Solus - not a repaint to match the card, but it does say KAD (in Aurebesh).

Great Paint jobs and HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE skills on lighting your models.

Superb !

All the best.

Barry.

Nice job lighting the Gozanti! The repaints are nice, and I especially like the Imperial squadrons. Great job on everything.

Love that Fang fighter!

It has been my experience in showing these mods to friends, my local gaming group, and tabling these models at tournaments that most people ask if I'm ever nervous about irreparably damaging the model in the process of attempting the modification. I have always answered "No, I don't see what I could do to it that would make it beyond repairable." So, case in fact, this is what the JumpMaster 5000 looked like once I finally got it apart (this has been the hardest, most stubborn model I've taken apart so far):

For those that have been following the other conversions I've posted at the beginning of this thread, you'll know I am a Chemist and not an Electrician . This is why I don't show you pictures of my wiring, it's pretty ugly - though entirely functional (I also just wire everything together and show no regard to color codings of wires). So, here's where Chemistry comes in handy (and experience building model kits): Methyl Ethyl Ketone. Traditionally a paint thinner for domestic and commercial use, however it is a plastic modeler's best friend. Why? It depolymerizes the plastic it is applied to and allows you to seamlessly join two pieces of plastic. So, despite the apparent explosion and complete snapping of parts above, my model is seamlessly back together (well mostly, you have to be able to open it to replace the battery). If you look at the above post with the switch you can barely even see where the broken two bottom halves were rebounded after disassembly. SCIENCE.

Fantastic work.

Excellent work on the JM5K switch - blends in so well, I didn't even spot it until I read the text.

(if you paint over the metal but, it'll conceal it even better)

Methyl Ethyl Ketone and the Polystyrene Polymers was the name of my band in college. Ironically we didn't stick together.

Go Science!

What material is that ? If it's WSF, you've done an incredible job smoothing it off!

It's Frosted Ultra Detail. Only plastic I buy from the Mel's Miniatures shop on Shapeways, so I don't have to waste time attempting to smooth off the model. Trade off is it is stupid pricy so I only buy when Shapeways is having sales (got this model when they had a holiday special for 25% off all orders).

Ah, fair enough...I'm the same, only buy in the sales, but I still get the WSF - for me, it's about saving on the international shipping costs (which are annoying, considering they're now produced just across the Channel ! )

Here's my "Black One" T-70 repaint I did when the ship originally came out, along with two TIE/fo Fighters that I felt the urge to make match the TIE/sf style (well before the TIE/sf was even announced...though I think we all knew it was coming).
