Whats Your Username Orgin Story?

By clontroper5, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

Oooh, get busy for a few days and miss an interesting thread!

As you might assume, I am a big fan of Patrick O'Brian's novels, which I consider to be some of the best novels written about anything, ever. He immerses you in another world and time, not only through the events of the novel but also in language and writing style.

It's been said that Stephen Maturin was Patrick O'Brian's alter ego, and if I may beg your indulgence I too fancy myself to have some similar qualities.

-Profession. I too, bear a disdain for being mistaken a surgeon (except the ones I work with, a fine bunch). I also happen to administer the modern day version of laudanum on a daily basis....thankfully, not to myself.

-Natural Philosophy. Before I started my final vocation, my senior thesis was a population study of a certain species of a certain New England butterfly, Cercyonis pegala pegala . I then deferred my admission to my next school (for 6 months) in order to help study an endangered bird in the Pacific (the Palila, a silly looking bird really, but with a very interesting evolutionary history paralleling the birds of the Galapagos). In the end the lure of working with people instead of staring at birds won out, thank goodness.

-Music. My chosen instrument was too impractical to bring aboard a ship (piano) but I still tickle the ivories from time to time...

-Lubberliness. My college sailing team was *ahem* not the hottest. I may have taken more than one plunge into the water while doing the most innocent of activities....like getting on the boat. Or sailing in a straight line. And I was the commmodore of the team!

-Expat. I too was born in a land not under His (Her) Majesty's rule, yet now reside within the Commonwealth.

-a reptilian appearance. Very interesting that my wife's assessment of this seems to be inversely correlated with the amount of time I spend devoted to her...

But if any Canadian authorities are reading this, I am definitely NOT a spy. Nope. Not at all, eh? You betcha. Not a chance. Sorry. (though my former college roommate may or may not work for the NSA).

Thats okay, Maturin. Even if you are, just say that you're Sorry .

You'll be fine.

Worked for me :D

I love Star Wars.

Disney has taken over Star Wars.

My favourite (none Star Wars) Disney character is Buzz Lightyear.

Though my Edge of the Empire character is a Clone, I'm secretly working on a Buzz Lightyear inspired character who will truly be ME in the Star Wars universe. He'll take on the name of Tukk when the original dies.

So I have Buzz Lightyear.

Opposite of light is dark, and I felt that darkhour was lame so went for Darknoon.

At school I reminded people of someone called Tucker. Shortened version of Tucker, with a K instead of a C.

Thus Tukk Darknoon was born.

You didn't remind people of a Matt Tucker, did you? Because I know a Matt Tucker. . .

You didn't remind people of a Matt Tucker, did you? Because I know a Matt Tucker. . .

It was a series about soldiers here in the UK about 23 years ago. One of the soldiers was called Tucker. Can't remember what the series was called, but it wasn't Band of Brothers.

Soilder Soilder....

As long as you don't have a singing buddy called Jerome we're all good!

Mine's a pun about grave robbing. Originally it was the name of my Necromancer from Diablo II.

When I joined the forums I wanted a username that sounded like a "proper name" and I decided to (re)use that one.

Also briefly concidered: Luther Tooms and Mort Voldu. ;)

Hmm, I get the rest but what is Luther Tooms?

"Luther" is pronounced as "looter" and "Tooms" as "Tombs" So Looter (of) Tombs or Tombs Looter. :D

I got that idea from Looten Plunder from the Captain Planet cartoons.

But seriously, who names their kid "Looten"? Luther works about the same and is an actual name.

By your powers combined...

But looten? I met a Nanna, Benjamin the other day. Yes. Ben Nanna. So, there's no depths of depravity parents wint stoop to when naming their kids.

Movie from my childhood and a school nickname.

I've always been a fan of WW2 novels, and a favorite of mine is "The Cruel Sea" by Nicholas Monsaraat. After the original ship in the story gets destroyed, the crew are transferred to a larger frigate in a larger escort group. The leading ship of said group was called HMS Viperous... and I loved that name from the moment I first read the book 15 years ago.

After that, the majority of my account names created have nearly always contained Viper, and have mostly been in some way connected the fictional HMS Viperous itself.

Anyway..definitely not as interesting as some of the other name explanations out there, but there you go.

I had always planned on being a US Navy Submarine Officer. This career dream started when I was about 10 years old and my Uncle served aboard US Navy Submarines. I wanted to command a nuclear submarine since they were the closest to Starship Command that real life offered.

So I took College AP courses in Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Analysis, ROTC, and English in High School. I then took the US Navy Nuclear Power Candidate Exam and scored a near perfect score (62/64). Got accepted for a Scholarship and went on to College NROTC. Unfortunately, genetics intervened and I began to suffer from Neural Degeneration in my right ankle. It was very minor (<2%) and the Navy spent two years trying to get a waiver since I was a Nuke Candidate. I continued my education. Eventually, I was medically disqualified and graduated with a Computer Engineering Degree.

My Naval ROTC Commander and Recruiter convinced me to use my passion for the service by joining the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps as an USNSCC Instructor. That way I could use my skills and training to help shape the next generation of navy personnel. At first I didn't want to work with young people, but eventually my love of the service won out and I did apply to the USNSCC and was eventually commissioned as an Ensign in the USNSCC after College. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I worked in that program for about 9 years. During that time I was ordered to Sub Base New London, CT for Sub School, and worked with Officers and Enlisted Men of the U.S, Navy. Served with 2 Submarines (USS PHILADELPHIA SSN 690, USS ANNAPOLIS SSN 760) and 2 Surface Ships (USS MERRRILL DD 976, and USS CURTIS WILBUR DDG 54. I was honored by the officers and men of USS ANNAPOLIS and the SUBSCHOL (not a misspelling) with an Honorary Submarine Qualification Certificate that I treasure to this day. During my time with the program I attended Drills at the Naval Reserve Center each month and went to sea, and lived aboard ships for 2 months each summer training alongside some of the best men and women I have ever met.

Made Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) and was assigned as the Commanding Officer of the ARIZONA DIVISION, USNCC at the Naval Reserve Center in Phoenix, AZ. I was up for Lieutenant (LT). My name was actually promulgated to the promotion board, but I was missing an Officers Professional Development Course (OPDC) and couldn't take it before the deadline due to Summer Training preparations with USS MERRIL that year.

Eventually I decided to go inactive as the nerve damage in my legs and hands grew to about 20%. I had started to develop a bit of a limp. There comes a point where you don't want to put your shipmates at risk because you are not as agile as you used to be. The Navy Docs at the Reserve Center had still signed off on my eligibility to go to sea, but I didn't want to risk putting others in danger if there was a situation that required quick action. Ships are a dangerous work environment.

I worked on the USNSCC Southwest Regional Staff for the last year and a half, and then went inactive. Never had the chance to take the trip to San Diego again and take the missing OPDC, so I am LT(JG) Howard C. Beam to this day. :)

I will say that I am proud of the time I spent working with the USNSCC and the USN. I am still friends with a couple of the Officers and Men I met to this day. I also tell people, follow your dreams. With effort and resolve, you can do things that others don't believe is possible.

LTJG Howard C. Beam, (SSH), USNSCC

tl/dr - I am a frustrated submarine officer.

Edited: That's me on the left receiving my Honorary Submarine Qualification Certificate during a class I was instructing at the Enlisted Sub School in New London, CT. I was very surprised. It's honorary because I was not active duty and able to spend the six months to a year aboard required to get my qual card completed. But I did bust my butt learning the systems and procedures, and teaching, so the active duty guys honored me with the honorary certificate.

Take the time it's worth it.

I was looking for some funny combination of sounds, when I thought of "Blah", but thought that was too plebeian. I was hoping not to be taken too seriously on the forums.

Let's play another game: Who's name do you want to know about??

From Trophy Trucks to tank tops and blurry poor quality sleeve tattoos we have it all where I live in Corona, California, which is the Bro Capitol of this great state full of bros. I live in a nice upscale gated community where literally every home has a motorcycle, atv, lifted matte black truck, boat, sand rail, Baja bug or some other form of Bro approved heavy machinery.

I myself ride dirt bikes and have since I was a child, I even rode competitively through a shop in upstate NY when I lived out there.

However I have left my bro days mostly behind me now, and my always present game nerd side has mostly won out. Now instead of tinkering on a gnarly dune runner a beast mode new sick sled I spend most of my nights painting tiny spaceships in my garage and thanking God I didn't get any tattoos.

However, when I moved to Corona back in Feb I found myself isolated from all the people I used to play Armada with. I realized either I replaced that comradarie or I would lose interest in the game. Since there is literally not a single game store or game group in all of Bro Mecca (Corona) I decided to stop being a lurker here and force you all to be my friends so I could still get my fix of daily Armada talk. Thus I chose my name as an homage to the asshats that drove me to begin participating here, and the pilot of the ship I was abusing to ruin all of my friends nights when we would play Armada.

My name is Tom

I like Sci-Fi, especially Star Wars

Americans seem to like calling Tom "Tommy" and somehow it sounds a little geekier.

Very boring compared to others here but Star Tommy is my geeky online name now.

My names origin is a great mix of trolling and nerd, which suits me well.

So when I was 12 or 13, I used to watch Gundam Wing (which I've since discovered does NOT hold up well) and my favorite character was Chang Wufei, a Gundam pilot from a Chinese space colony. So I used the name Wufei a lot for online stuff with various letters and numbers after it. I also started writing Gundam Wing fanfic with some local friends. It was pretty nerdy.

Much later in life, some friends and I were lurking youtube and we discovered this super terrible band called BrokeNCYDE which was like scream... core? I really don't know what genre they were. Whatever it was, it was awful. We were making fun of them hard and discovered the members of the band had these really stupid names like Phat J, Antz, Se7en, and other ridiculousness.

We got to discussing what our terrible scream core names would be. Wufei became WuFame. Quatre became Quarter Mil (later shorted to .25 Mil). Trowa because Cash Flowa. etc.

I actually thought WuFame was rather catchy and have used it since. Probably been using it for at least 7-8 years now.

Since this origin story is extremely nerdy and laced with inside humor, I often just tell people I'm a big fan of Wu-Tang clan.

Well Scott Mcneil (the voice of Duo in the dub) did liken the main characters of gundam Wing to a boysband... with mechs.

Yeah it's basically the backstreet boys in space.

Vergilius is the name of the most famous Roman poet, author of the Aeneid. I was reading it in Latin in 2001 when I needed to sign up for a forum online. I think I'd grown out of Excalibur (or X~Calibur) which I'd used up till that point as a handle. So from that point on, Vergilius was just the easiest handle to use.

Just...don't smoke drugs.

Just...don't smoke drugs.

How about drink them?

Just...don't smoke drugs.

should I Snort drugs?

How about drink them?

That's absolutely what I took from that comment.
