Custom Heralds

:') Stat inversion is interesting too. But I think I'd stick to the other herald with the more dreadful Jabberwock if I play the scenario ;'D (and I probably eventually will, because I like the concept).

Mrsgamua:
What do you suggest for the "Looking Glass" Herald and ability modification?

Seems like the Jabberwock is going to trap people in the Hospital with his high awarness! Most 3 toughness evil monster have low awarness... plus liked him better as a flyer seemed more of his thing ;-)

For the record, it will actually move past the hospital (Well, Uptown streets) due to being fast. If it starts at the Woods it shouldn't end up in that space unless something wonky happens.

Fine he will trap people in Church and the Sceince Building lol

DKW

I like the new Herald...plus If you wanted to make the Jabber even more evil consider unstable locations as street locations!

...but if you where to do that I would tone his combat modifiers down a bit -3 and physical immunity and three toughness makes him harder to bet than some AOs! lol

plus what if you close a Gate With a slash, where does Mr. Jabber go?

Finally, a good reason to stay and pray ;'D

Good question. You could claim that the Jabberwock was defeated with the Gate Closing, so it goes back to the Woods and you get a Random Trophy. Why don't we go with that and see how it works out. On the same note, if a Mythos Card or Encounter gets rid of the Jabberwock, just return it to the Woods and you don't get any Trophy.

If you add Unstable Locations to the Flying Jabebrwock's sights, it could become just as dangerous as the Fast one, and more to remember when you are already trying to remember the stat switch.

If I remember correctly, the Jabberwock was a physical manifestation of people's fears.
The Fast Jabberwock is on par with a Star Vampire, and the Flyer Jabberwock is slightly weaker.

Feel free to play test them and see how they actually work out. If it truly proves to be too much, we can work on it to make it weaker.

As dangerous? More dangerous.

If you can't read that, it says:

Fah'ic: Frustrated Herald

When Fah'ic is the Herald, shuffle the Fah'ic's Impact and Curse of Fah'ic cards and put them by the board at the start of the game.

Fah'ic has been foiled by Xuo three times now. He's getting angry.

When setting up the game, shuffle the Fah'ic's Impact deck, turn over three of those cards, and put them into play. These cards have detrimental effects for the Investigators. They may be discarded at any time by any player by adding a doom token to the Ancient One's doom track.

At the end of each Mythos Phase, the first player rolls a die. On a failure, the player shuffles the Curse of Fah'ic deck, draws a card, and takes its effect. The card is then returned to the deck.

Bitter Rivalry
If the Ancient One awakens and Xuo is the Guardian, do not add the Small Favors cards to the Epic Battle deck. Xuo is too busy dealing with Fah'ic to be able to help fight the Ancient One.

(Xuo is a Guardian I just posted in the Custom Guardians section)

View the whole gallery (of both Guardian and Herald): http://img5.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=carddeck1.jpg

I like the Impact and Curse cards, looks like they'd really add an extra layer of challenge to the game. Haven't checked out Xuo yet, but the thematic rivalry sounds cool as well.

hmmm...for some reason it won't let me post the updated (and yes I noticed this right after I posted this so was still able to edit) Vorbal Blade where I've remove the, "Auto Automatically" part of its text enfadado.gif

Any Phase: When using Vorbal Blade in Combat, each pair of 6's rolled passes the combat check against a monster or removes a doom token from the Ancient One.

It's Vorpal, not Vorbal ;') +3 for a 8 dollar two handed weapon... Ehhh, I'd pass, despite it being able to cut through immunities. +4, maybe. As things are now, I'd rather have a shotgun.

You can see the updated item in Custom Items, etc didn't want 3 Vorpal Blades in my PB account.

Dude you could always delete the old ones afterwards.

This is a herald to make Cthulhu more fun as an Ancient One. As with most Ancient Ones, the game doesn't feel much different based on who is drawn. We playtested this last night and it worked out very well. I also try to make it very thematic, using phrases and quotes from the stories and having abilities that fit Cthulhu. Let me know what you think!

Blashpemies: This ability makes Blessings harder to get. I considered making Blessings discard on a roll of 1 or 2 (instead of 1), but not sure which is better. This version is less harsh.

Cult: This causes Cultists to be very common, literally swarming in the streets as they celebrate Cthulhu's awakening. Since they still count toward the monster limit (they are not spawn), you have to make sure to keep their numbers in check. This had the nice side benefit of making the terror level much more of a threat. They also get stronger as they gather, so four Cultists will have a -3 combat modifier each. (And they still have Cthulhu's Worshipper ability!)

Risen: Gate closings are much less simple when they all act like R'lyeh.

Ancient: Cthulhu is tougher in final combat. Characters that start out 3/7, 7/3, or 5/5 will only get three attacks before being devoured. Characters that start out 4/6 or 6/4 will get four attacks. Quite frankly I think most Ancient Ones are too easy to defeat in final combat, so this gives a good incentive to get that win by closing/sealing.

(I also found that Strange Eons does not let you type the characters "fh"; that's why Fhtagn is capitalized. Pretty funny!

All credit and thanks to dkw and Avi for this one. I decided to tweak dkw's Nyarlathotep herald to make it a bit simpler, but keep some of the cool effects he created. I also couldn't resist adding in all the flavor text and ability titles from the mythos. The new pic is from googling Nyarlathotep images.

The abilities to gain clues at the beginning of the game, and to return monsters to the cup, are gone. Instead the terror level goes up whenever someone gets whacked. The Masks now jump one person each time a gate is closed instead of at terror 3,6,9. They are also spawns now so they don't count toward the limit.

None of this is earth-shaking, I just wanted to use your ideas but found it a bit overwhelming the way it was. We played this once and the Mask monsters were horrific, especially since you realize a turn or so in advance of a gate close that you're going to be first player. Some of them are just sick!

My favorite things about this herald are that a) it makes the terror track increase faster, b) the Masks see a lot of play, c) there is a much better chance at least one person will be devoured, and d) you cannot prepare for the final battle very easily. These are all things that I think needed a tweak in the original rules. It also makes a win by sealing much harder. Overall I consider it a herald to use when you want to make the game noticeably harder. Very nice job dkw, thanks for the inspiration. :D

Not bad. Definitely simpler to use. You are welcome, and Nyarlathotep really feels more like a Herald then as an Ancient One.

While that picture is quite good, I still like the picture I used. I felt a rendition of Nyarlathotep's humanoid form was more fitting for the Herald. That, and it took forever to even find that picture.

I have no qualms about what you have created, and glad I could be of some inspiration to making something people would really like.

I like The Stars are Right but the Cthulhu Herald needn't be Ctuhlhu only. Just replace Chtulhu Fatghn with Ia! Fathgn! and change the final ability to read If Cthulhu is the Ancient One... and it'll be a more felxible herald.

That's very true Jake, not a bad idea. I don't think I'll change mine, but anyone else who uses it can obviously do so. My main purpose was to make the herald thematic to the specific Ancient One, so I prefer not to use it for anyone else. Otherwise the -3 gates, blessing cost, final battle attack, and flavor text all make no real sense (though they'd work fine rules-wise).

I'll probably make other AO heralds in the future for those who don't have them yet. As with the Dunwich Horror herald, AH seems more fun and thematic when your AO and herald combo really add to the gameplay in a way that makes sense.

*Very* nice. Two complaints though. One, upload a better quality image :') and two, get a better picture of stars. Rather than just say so, I decided to google for a bit and see if I could find you some.
