SirWilli's Workshop: Armada stuff

The road is long for me but I will make it.

The Ace names in the side is a personal preference, if I have lots of boxes scattered around (I'm messy by nature) it's nice to have an easy way to pick out the "special" boxes. I suppose I could have printed them on different coloured paper....now there's an idea! As it is I'll probably circle the little character portraits on top in red, just to make it easier to see from above.

i use the ace boxes to store thier defensive tokens. But i know i can use them as non-unique fighters.

I just wish there was a better way to store squadrons then to put them in individual boxes. Seem like a lot of wasted space.

How so?

It's certainly more efficient than foam...you can't get much thinner than two sheets of card stock between squadrons! The only more efficient way to store them that I can think of .... would be to take the fighter models off the stand and put them all in a little box or bag. And that's a recipe for lost/broken fighters if I ever heard one...

not mention time consuming

I can't seem to find the Carrier Box downloads anywhere on BoardgameGeek or SirWilliBald's site.

The link to download the .zip for it just takes me back to the Armada Downloads page.

I finally found it here.

Huh? You mean the link on this page:

Tried it a few seconds ago, no problem.

They take up a lot less space if you throw them in a pile. Not preferable, but I think that is what he is getting at. The best way to store them (as far as organization and avoiding lost/broken pieces) unfortunately takes up a significantly more amount of space than less tidy methods.

That's it. I even did a prototype box for a pile of squadrons, but it didn't felt right. Yes, it was more space efficient, but all the rumble in the box and every now an then two squads got stuck with one another and I still haven't completely given up the thought of painting them. After all I decided to go with single boxes. Granted, I could have done multiple heights to accomodate for the various peg heights, but hell, who wants to search for the one and only matching box when cleaning up the table after a match?

That's what I figured, but I was seeing if he had something else in mind. The carrier boxes really help organize the squadrons, especially when you have a large number of them. The extra organization more than makes up for the small amount of lost space.

I would like to have a box with dividers that can fit 4-8 squadrons nested together to save a little space

i don't HAVE to have it, nor do i really need it.

The carrier boxes do that, and come in sizes that fit 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10- squadron boxes. I don't see any reason why you couldn't use them for unboxed squadrons.

Re: Kinnison: I too desire this.

Re: DarthSidious: I think what he's saying (and what *I* am saying) is that it would be nice to have 1 box, with 1 lid, and 4 or 8 divided compartments inside for holding squadrons.

1. One box with one lid and divided compartments. Besides the middle spacer from the CarrierBoxes (which could be omitted) this won't save that much space but you won't have to open that much boxes.

2. One box with one lid without divided compartments. This would certainly free up some space at the cost of clutter and possible damage to the squads.

The latter is not that easy to design in terms of exact measurements, because the outer measurements of a pile of squads highly depends on the way you put them together (in a neat row, some upside down, huge pile, ...).

I can give both options a try for sure, but here are workarounds for both versions:

1. You've already built the squad hangars? Cut the upper lid and the upper flaps away and put the topless hangars into a CarrierBox. One box, one lid, divided compartments!

2. Build a CarrierBox without spacer and try to put in as many squads as you can fit.

A divider should be really simple to make....a few sheets of card stock with cuts halfway through, put together (like a box full of wine bottles) should do the trick!

That's right, added to my list!

And another update, I've added the defense token icons to all GearBoxes, details on this change and on a few changes to my website as usual:

A little info concerning the wishes for a Command Bridge designed for the special landscape ships cards:

I won't be doing such a version for now because:

1. Without sleeves the landscape cards fit into the existing holder with ease.

2. With sleeves they are just a tad to wide (FFG sleeves). If you cut the sleeve just a little bit it both fits and still protects the whole card.

Because of this I can't justify all the work needed for making the holder just a tad wider, at least at the moment. All elements would have to be resized, even the card holders, otherwise the thing won't close anymore. My spare time is a bit limited at the moment, therefore I'll put this on the end of my list.

But feel free to bother me again if my workaround doesn't work for some reason!

Even gave the divider for the squad hangars a try, it's not that difficult, but I don't like the final look and feel. Thinking about another solution, even though building it would be a little more elaborate. Take a look at the concept, I developed it for my painted Battlelore miniatures:

Still undecided... Perhaps I'll do both versions? But you'll have to wait a bit, I took a break from making boxes and continued painting my BL minis. And the weather is to nice at the moment. But Armada wave 1 is due to arrive here in germany, so I'll be back in cardstock business soon. :)

Perhaps a silly question, but what are the differences between ENG - DIN and ENG - LETTER on your website? Is it just the printing format or something? :)

Will be printing out some shortly. This is definitely the way to go for Armada imho!

Yes, it's the printing format, US letter vs. DIN-A4. There are a few boxes where this matters because I had to rearrange things a bit due to the different paper sizes.

That is nice! How easy would it be to adapt that to imperial assault and or descent?

Very easy, in fact I did this with IA in mind. I plan to keep the outer measurements the same and only adjust the height and the inner dividers, just need the minis to do that (IA still not published in germany). Same for descent, should be no big deal. Could give it at try, but since the announcement of IA I pretty much gave up on descent (if I want to play fantasy I prefer Battlelore).

I am still hoping for box made for ships on their base :)

Hey Willi, I'd like to thank you for these awesome designs. I used the command bridge, dice box and the damage deck dealer for a demonstration game to get my local group into Armada and they were disappointed they weren't included in the core set. They actually admitted the command bridge was one of the reasons they came over- it was so cool to look at.

So thank you for that, it's gotten me a good few oppenents to bring to submission under the might of the empire.

Additionally I love the micro hangers and gearboxes etc, they're so storage efficient and stacked I can keep my collection in the core box. They're all appreciated and make for a good and visually pleasing storage alternative too.

I'm sorry, but I have not intention of doing those at the moment. I have two major problems with this solution:

1. You need to flip the ship token over from time to time

2. More important: One of my design guidelines - minimising the required storage space - would get a severe blow because building boxes for ships on stands mean boxing lots of air.

Wow, thanks a lot, what a nice read! Your story really made me look like the cat that got the cream, it's so nice to hear when people are enthusiastic about your own work. Man, I should really do a "hall of fame" for my website where I can show off with the best comments ;)

Oh, almost forgot: You're welcome.
