Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Yeah, it's a gloss. I didn't know there was a matte lacquer. I just grabbed the blue Testor's label that looked like the one in the video. It has a little sticker on the lid with a 6 point font that says "gloss". Ug!

My royal guards look like they're ready to go out in the rain. Haha!

It's my understanding that if you coat them with a matte the gloss effect goes away, so all is not lost

I'll try it and let you know.

Wow, Dettol works great!!

Lord Vader is ready to paint again!!

Good to know, I've heard Dettol works but I've never seen a before and after. I'll need to get myself some. If for no other reason than it smells divine.

uh, really? I couldn't STAND the smell...

Unless you're kidding

Not kidding at all, it's like marmite I guess. Love it or hate it.

Then again I love the smell of E.coli cultures at work which gets me a few dodgy looks. Maybe my sense of smell is just buggered!

I think I fear you now, Muz

You should come to my lab. I'll show you what chemicals actually smell bad. When the other half came into my work with me one weekend I got her to take a big whiff of β -m ercaptoethanol. Now that smells horrible. However I don't recommend you actually give it a good whiff... ' considered toxic, causing irritation to the nasal passageways and respiratory tract upon inhalation, irritation to the skin, vomiting and stomach pain through ingestion, and potentially death if severe exposure occurs'

Yikes. I'll leave that to better men.

I'll stick with finishing carpentry

I got the dullcoat lacquer today and sprayed it over the gloss lacquer on my Royal Guards. It worked great. Now their robes went back to normal instead of looking like raincoats.

Thanks for the advice. ;)

Good to know. How much scrubbing did you have to do. Ive soaked some figures in Simple Green for about a day and I had to scrub pretty good to get some of the paint off. There were some figures that it just didnt want to come off (mainly my ATST) So Ive got them soaking again but this time Im giving it 48hrs. Hopefully it wont take as much scrubbing but we'll see later tonight.

I stripped a ship in Dettol. Worked great. Scrub and rinse with more dettol not water or bad stuff will happen. After your done stripping rub clean with rage. But the smell may stay with the figure. I stripped my ship 3 months ago and every time I pull it out you can smell the Dettol. Nobody has really complained about it.

Oh yah wear gloves while working with Dettol. I read that you skin will turn white and crusty from lots of exposure.

Yup, pretty much same experience as Bad Wolf. In the span of 24 hours I scrubbed it twice, (once at the 8 hr mark, when the 24 hrs was up I did it again)

When I brushed it the first time, about 80 percent of the paint came off with minimal scrubbing, then when I brought it out the last time the rest of the paint came off easily. Kicking myself for not being more cautious with the varnish because its not my way to rush things, but at least I was able to salvage the mini with no damage to it.

Major thing to remember, as was said, do not rinse with water until ALL the paint is gone.

But when the paint is gone you must get rid of all the chemical, or the new paint won't stick.

What happens if you accidentally touch water to dettol? Does it melt the mini or something?

mixed with the paint it turns really sticky and gloopy and is a total ***** to get off anything

^^

You get gummy gobs of paint that become a real paint to remove.

I can't wait for the next video. I know that sounds fan boy, but man they are as entertaining as they are helpful.

Amen brother. I'm busily basing my trandos as we speak, (Vader worked out beautifully) but I still can't wait to see what Sorastro comes up with next...

Thanks a lot folks! Progress has been slow due to so much other stuff taking up my time but I appreciate the encouragement!

@Jerbiwan. I might not be so brave to attempt this myself, and this information sounds a little late for you, but...

I have read that you can reverse the frosting effect by applying more coats of dullcote. This sounds counter intuitive but apparently the lacquer on top of lacquer re-activates the 'thingmybobs' and the mistyness clears up. Like I said, I have read this elsewhere but have never had the gonads to gamble further ruin my miniatures. Perhaps someone of more painitng experience can quash this or concur.

I have ruined some my Mice and Mystics minion minis (that's a lot of M's) with Matt Varnish spray and frosting, however my frost spider looks ace. I have since stopped spraying and now paint a few coats of slightly thinned down Liquitex Matt Varnish. Thinned to prevent brush strokes. Usually 2 coats, then I 'Ardcoat the shiny parts. The Liquitex does something really nice with the colours. Not sure how to describe it. The finish is dull but the colours vibrant. Similar to that sensation when you apply Bloodletter glaze to the cloaks of the Royal Guards.

I just don't trust myself with a varnish spray anymore.

Sorastro,

Again, thanks for the inspirations.

Do you actually get to play the games anymore?

I hope you are finding some time for you and your friends to enjoy the game.

Would be nice to see some shots from your table in flight...

@ Addum

Thanks for the tips! Tho I think I agree with you on the subsequent layers of varnish. I don't want to risk it. It was a lot of work to strip Vader down, but in the end its my preferred method. I don't like covering bad work up (making honey out of dog do-do)

Interesting that you use a brush on varnish tho...

I may try that!

Being that it's a completely free resource I couldn't fathom complaining ha ha. I've never painted before so let me say this is an amazing help. I love how Nuln Oil is like magic. Totally crazy what shades can do vs. figures painted without them.
