LOL X-Wings suck in X-Wing...now even Y's are better!

By Deadshane, in X-Wing

Rookie X-Wing

-21pts

Gold Squadron Y-Wing

-R2 astromech

-BTL-A4

-Autoblaster Turret

-21pts

Y wing is MORE maneuverable, but not faster. (almost stress-proof actually) Little less shooty at long range, but are brutal at point blank range. A little more durable against small 2d shooting but MUCH more durable against HLC shots. (there's a difference mathematically)

Something needs to be done. If you're using a Generic X-Wing, you're doing it wrong.

On paper it looks like that.

i'd hazard though if you played four rookies versus four golds if the rookies player kept his distance and harrassed and interdicted the Y's *only* when it was in their favour to engage and stayed at range three whereever possible it wouldnt be that easy to take them down.

It would probably make for a very tedious game though.

Dont get me wrong i love Y wings and i think that even without autoblaster and with ion turrets they are great ships.

R2 on a Y wing makes a big diffence and if i have the points its the astromech of choice (alternatively i like the one that fixs crits to reg damage so you can have those five hull points really soak up fire)

if i get time I can try the 4 rookeis versus 4 gold in my pub games tomorrow day and see what it goes like.

having 3 dice over the long ranges compensates far more than the damage output of the Ys. I'd be the guy who takes the rookies instead.

My thoughts exactly.

Not really first off y-wings only have one agility so die just as fast as an x-wing in practical terms, they also have a harder time keeping things in their front arc, then you have to remember you can only spend the focus on one of the two attacks meaning you'll roughly get the same firepower on a worse platform.

Rookie X with Hull upgrade or Ywing ICT R2 BTL-A4?

Now that's a comparison that's very very interesting.

I think I'd go for the Y.

Or Rookie X with R7-T1 or R3-A2?

Both are beautiful. I'd take either to the ball.

I will agree that generic Xwings are harder to put in lists nowadays but a sweeping statement oy Ys better than X's I do not. Short answer is the Xwing can still do a lot that the Y's even with those upgrades can't. The range 3 joust alone shows significant differences between the two which again changes at range 2 then changes again when both ships Kturn. Mind you we are only speaking of jousting...without even considering what lists you take either. You simply can't compare the two.

Trouble is not the comparison to Y-Wings. Just compare the X-Wing to Z-95 or Tie Fighters.

Y-wings were always better, what are you going on about. For what? 24 points Y-wing with ion turret and R2? Yes please.

Are you kidding me? X-Wings are still fantastic, OP. Why? Solid dial, solid defense and solid firepower. It's everything you need.

X-wings are amazing in X-wing

Just because the generics suck doesn't mean the ship itself is bad ^_^

My personal favorites:

Tarn + R7 astro

Biggs w/stuff

Wege + Predator

and soon, Luke + Lone Wolf

and all the poor rebel Y-wings have is Dutch :( (and a glorious beard on Horton)

It's true, Y-wings need EPT pilots - and more of them, but gold squadron can still represent! (and by god it is hilarious when Gold squadron meet Delta squadron and EVERYONE gets ionized).

The Y is rolling two unmodified attacks. Its got to use its focus to even fire the autoblaster. Unless your dice are hot, the Y-wings will have a difficult time out gunning the X-wings. Really on a 4 v 4, whoever got initiative in this battle would likely win.

Its got to use its focus to even fire the autoblaster.

you are thinking blaster turret. autoblaster is just limited to R1

solid defense

Literally the third-worst defense (out of 9, or 10 if you count the ORS as a separate YT-1300, and the X-Wing is still worse than that) in the Rebel fleet, coming in firmly ahead of Z-95s and just barely better than the HWK. (If you ignore crit damage, its defensive stats are equal to the HWK.)

solid dial

10 maneuvers on the dial [removing the turn/bank double counting] (Rebel average is 10.3), 1 K-turn (Rebel average is 1.1), and 3 greens (Rebel average is 3.3).

And, if we consider OP, for less than the cost of a naked Rookie you can have a Gold Sq. + R2 Astromech, which gives it a better dial than the X-Wing.

solid firepower

X-Wing generics are weak. If you are list-building with Rookiee or Red Squadron Pilots, it's a good idea to pick something else, which is almost guaranteed to be better.

X-Wing pilot abilities, varied astromech choices (since the Y-Wing would mostly just like an R2 Astromech a lot), and EPT slots (which only come on the uniques anyways) are the ship's saving graces.

I find the title offensive as it infers that Y-wings aren't that good which 100% false. X-wings sucking is also 100% false. They just don't have as much cool factor as Y-wings

I'd run either and be happy.

Let's also not make comparisons based on cards that aren't actually out yet.

And a few notes:

Your build requires rng1, which is tough for a PS 2 ship (especially lumerbing Ys) So you'd be better off with R7T1 than R2. Which puts you to 23pts.

Or go with a Blaster Turret and R2 so you don't need rng 1, but now you're susceptible to blocking (at PS not a huge issue) but you're still at 23pts.

Either way, at 23pts I could get Tarn Mission who is pretty action friendly, and with a slightly higher PS he gets shots off before those pesky Bandits and Academies, et al.

As well, the 3 attack from a Rookie are more likely to get past Agi dice of just about anyone, at rng 2, whereas the Autoblaster Ywing is still only throwing 2 dice.

I love ywing, but to say that equivalent 'xwings suck' is just untrue.

Anything flown by the Rebel terrorists is garbage. Imperial Fleet is where its at. Come to the dark side...we have cookies*

*limited time offer at select locations while supplies last

Played a game today with Salm and three Reds. Won the game and the ships performer like they sound, solid. But I just love the Xwing in all his glory and it is the White reason I started playing this game.

Um, yes it does mean that! The generics strip the ship down to just the ship. So, if the generic is bad, the ship is bad.

I think the game has suffered some power creep, though I don't think it was all that intentional by FFG. As such, the older ships have kind of been eclipsed. That said, I still think that TIEs are awesome, but they're also filler, but as I read MJ's analysis, X-Wings, Y-Wings, and TIE/x1 are not favored, nor do they seem to perform at the highest level.

No, it does not mean that.

A ship is far more than just the base stats, considering all the customization options FFG offers along with every phyiscal model.

Since the X-wing has some ballar character pilots (and some very decent upgrade options in the fairly rare Astromech slot, shared only with the rebel Y), it can be an amazing ship. Meanwhile, the poor Tie Advance is limping along with only Vader as a sort of saving grace (imo not really, basically a worse A-wing).

As for Tie Fighters...no, they're still absolutely amazing. Whether academy filler or a Howlrunner led swarm, it's really hard to think of them as anything less than one of the most viable imperial ships. I've murder more than enough Phantoms to know that the mini-swarm is the actual threat ;)

Plus, characters like Backstabber pack the biggest punch for price out of any ship in the game, Dark Curse is a royal pain in the ass, and Howlrunner is basically unequaled as a support ship.

Yep Xs are terrible. I almost made the cut (4-2) for T32 at Worlds with an 3X build. Horrible trash ship. Clearly the worst.

Yep, you should have brought B's...you would have made the cut. Glad you agree.
