STAR WARS: REBELS Discussion Thread!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

Getting back to Sabine and the Dark Saber. I was doing a little searching on the web for something else and came across this article regarding the second half of season 3. Old news I know but I haven't seen this mentioned here so I'm posting the link to the article I found.

It's looks like we'll be getting more info on Sabine's back story in the second half of season 3.

Dave Filoni is smug in his ambiguity. He never says Ashoka lives, and he repeatedly emphasizes the use of symbolism. A shaded figure of Ashoka dissappearing into a tunnel is not proof of life.

Nothing in Rebels is abstract: even if it's symbolic Ahsoka does walk into a dark Malachor tunnel after her duel with Vader. That means he doesn't turn her into a lightsaber kebab. She survives her duel with him, likely courtesy of the explosion given Vader's state in the epilogue sequences.

There's no evidence that she leaves Malachor alive but there's also no evidence she's dead. If they wanted to unambigiously kill her I'd wager they would have.

Her fate is up in the air, claiming categorically that she's dead is as baseless as claiming she doesn't die in that tunnel. Your claim of "dead until proven otherwise" cedes your factual highground: she isn't proven to be anything post Twilight of the Apprentice.

someone has to found the knights of ren, someone with more experience than Luke has when the Knights attack the Jedi academy they do have plenty of more trained force wielders to cleanse the whole academy.

How do we know any of them other than Kylo Ren are force wielders? They killed a load of barely trained children and adolescents without Luke being there.

Claiming Ahsoka is dead is like Claiming Han Solo is alive at the end of TFA. You see her walk down the tunnel. You don't see her categorically die.

Until you see a body, she is alive. With Han, you see the kill, you know it's fatal. That is that.

Now, Luminara Unduli is dead, she died differently from how she did in the EU. But that's it. Rebels made a point of showing her mummified corpse in a rad as hell dark as hell episode.

Now we just need the same to happen to Sabine...

Claiming Ahsoka is dead is like Claiming Han Solo is alive at the end of TFA.

I wouldn't go that far. We saw Han die. Ahsoka's fate was left ambigious.

Filoni himself said that wasn't her end. That, would be somewhere else.

Can you cite a source? In every interview I've seen, Filoni has been sly and noncomittal on the subject of Ashoka.

I will continue to insist Ashoka is dead until someone can make an argument for her survival that is either:

1. Published canon.

2. Credible behind-the-scenes material

3. A believable fan theory. Such a theory must honor the character, and have relevant thematic support in canonical sources.

I just watched the show like several others but didn't we see her walking away as Vader walked out? If we saw her standing there then she could be alive. Couldn't she?

I would not put it past Vader to approach Ahsoka the same way that he did Starkiller in the Force Unleashed game; only together can they defeat the Emperor and only if she were to embrace the full power of the dark side... and I could actually see that tactic working on her.

She fought what sometimes seemed like a hopeless battle during the clone wars and they had a full army backing them up. Now, the Rebellion faces far worse odds (even Kanan felt reluctant at the beginning of season 2). I could see her attempt to walk a darker path to end a war, save countless lives, stop the Sith and save her former mentor and friend.

Dave Filoni is smug in his ambiguity. He never says Ashoka lives, and he repeatedly emphasizes the use of symbolism. A shaded figure of Ashoka dissappearing into a tunnel is not proof of life.

Does anyone else care to cite their source? This is not my hill to die on. I'll admit I'm wrong if anyone can present something more concrete.

I wouldn't go that far. We saw Han die.

For all we know, there's a giant bacta vat down there!

Nothing in Rebels is abstract:

This statement (and others) gives me the impression you are a devout literalist. Clearly you did not watch the Ahsoka panel I refenced above. It's on YouTube, not difficult to find. Dave Filoni talks about the symbolism of descending into the underworld on Malachor. He repeatedly poses the question: what does it mean?

Star Wars uses symbolism all the time, and Rebels is no exception.

Her fate is up in the air, claiming categorically that she's dead is as baseless as claiming she doesn't die in that tunnel. Your claim of "dead until proven otherwise" cedes your factual highground: she isn't proven to be anything post Twilight of the Apprentice.

Valid point. I'll concede here; Ashoka's death is my chosen fan theory (and only a theory.) I'm not one of those Game of Thrones "everyone must die for the story to be good" fanboys. Ahsoka's death at the end of Twilight of the Apprentice makes sense to me. The walk into the tunnel is a symbol of her deprture from the world of the living. If Ahsoka appears again, I will accept her return, and my perception of her disappearance into the tunnel will change. If she returns as a Dark Sider, then the meaning of the symbol changes. If she returns alive and unchanged, then the symbol ceases to be a symbol. That's the way symbols work.

Filoni said we will see more of Ahsoka during the Celebration panel about Rebels.

Thank you for giving a reference to a specific panel or video. I watched that panel before, but I only remember the Thrawn reveal. I will watch that panel again later and post the timestamp of anything related to Ahsoka (if I can find it.) At this point I will speculate he might have been referring the Ahsoka novel (which was announced officially during the Ahsoka's Untold Tales panel.)

I wouldn't go that far. We saw Han die.

Well...we saw him get stabbed and fall into some fog.

For all we know, there's a giant bacta vat down there!

Which would have done him a world of good......

if the planet hadn't exploded 5 minutes later. :P

I think it was during the Q&A near the end of the panel, sorry, can't check it now.

Didn't we see Maul get cut in two then fall into an abyss as well? Whatever the center of the city was anyway? As it turned out Maul wasn't dead and it wasn't even a giant bacta vat either.

The life and death of a fictional character is solely dependent on the canon writers of that character. Following that the life or death of a character can be changed in future episodes as needed, hence the reappearance of Maul.

Today we know that Han fell after being stabbed and Ahsoka was seen walking into a cave/tunnel. Based on that we can reasonably assume that Han is dead and Ahsoka is alive. Either are up for future grabs.

If we know anything about the Force, "seeing more of Ahsoka" doesn't mean she has to be alive for us to do so.

If we know anything about the Force, "seeing more of Ahsoka" doesn't mean she has to be alive for us to do so.

She is great, but I wouldn't see her at force ghost level of power.

From the Rebels Panel at Star Wars Celebration:

"Will Ahsoka die and come back as a Force ghost?" - fan question at 44:35

Dave Filoni answers he doesn't think Ahsoka has the necessary ability and at 45:13 says this: "Whether we have to worry about that right now or not is kind of up in the air."

Still looking for anything definitively saying they will use Ahsoka again in the future.

I'm pretty sure at this point she is considered dead, they just left open the space to bring her back if they so choose at some point. Though I think he said in an interview that her part in Rebels was done, if I am remembering correctly.

Sorry, it wasn't fan Q&A, it was an answer to the host question at the start of the panel.

"Did Ahsoka survive the battle with Vader?"

“(...)The only thing I've said is that most likely, porbably when it's a character I really like, and obviously I like Ahsoka, it's gonna be hard to kill her off, if it was something like Vader that would make sense, but... I'm not gonna say in what way but it’s likely that you might not have seen the last of Ahsoka Tano, let's just say that.”

Now that Filoni is head of ALL Star Wars animation projects, my sincere hope is that Disney/Lucasfilm basically adopt what I call "The Tinkerbell Model" for Ahsoka. I'd love to see one direct-to-video 60-90 minute movie every 12-18 months featuring Ahsoka. They could adapt/produce those unfinished scripts from the Clone Wars they went over in that panel. They could basically do a CGI version of the Ahsoka novel, and then move forward from there, showing missions as Fulcrum, and later possibly show us just how bad off she is after limping into that cave on Malachor. Just my two cents.

Just watched the new episode, I know, I'm late, but HOLY BANTHA!!! SABINES EVEN MORE OP NOW!!!!

She'll probably be a pro at using the Darksaber in no time. ;)

What I'm most excited about is from this week's Rebels Recon.

THIS IS A THEORY. I haven't seen Rogue One or read any spoilers. This is just my Theory.

CHOPPER IS GOING TO BE IN ROGUE ONE.

They shipped Chopper to the UK last summer. I was at Celebration London. I was bummed that I never saw Chopper there. He's my favorite. He wasn't at the Rebels panel, wasn't on the show floor. As far as I know, no one at Celebration saw Chopper anywhere.

Why would they ship him to the UK if he wasn't going to be at Celebration? That's when they were doing RO reshoots I think. Toss him in the background at Yavin base? Hell yeah!

At the end of this week's Rebels Recon, Andi, finally yells at Chopper about being a British pest, and asks him what happened in England. He says something and she acts surprised and then it cuts. The next time we'll have an RR episode will be after we've all seen Rogue One.

I'm so convinced we'll see him in RO. I'm going to be sad if I'm wrong lol. I love Chopper.

Sure, but

a) Darth Maul is a Sith Lord and, apparently, survived on stubborn hate alone (which actually makes a certain amount of (Star Wars) sense) and

b) Naboo didn't explode.

Yes, fictional characters live fictional lives where literally ANYTHING can happen and MAYBE Gandalf's eagles carried Han to a bacta planet that DIDN'T explode (which would explain why they were too busy to just floop the ring over to Mordor!), but if someone were to use Darth Maul's apparent death in a movie to justify why Han might actually still be alive, I think they would still have a very long, uncomfortable road ahead.
