STAR WARS: REBELS Discussion Thread!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

I get annoyed that "filler" is considered a waste of time. It is okay for the series to be episodic.

Is it just me or, when watching an episode of Rebels, does anyone else feel like they're watching a group of people play FFG's Star Wars RPG? It sure feels that way to me. Captain Rex wasn't in this episode? Simple...the player running him couldn't make it for the game.

They constantly reference WEG when talking about the show.

I do know that Pablo Hidalgo, when he was growing up, was the only person allowed to GM any Star Wars RPGs for his gaming group.

He also wrote a little bit for the WEG RPG so it kinda makes sense that he might include little bits of it in Rebels. Heck the Shadow Caster was named after the ship that his group used in his campaign.

The Empire lasts for quite a while after Endor in the NuCanon as well with Governors and Moffs all holding out till the bitter end. Even after Jakku they go on in an albeit neutered state, so he's got a decent bit of time to work with if he survives. (I heard the Raider-class is mentioned in the Lost Stars novel about Jakku. Not materiel enough to get totally classified as canon but pretty close. ^_^ )

Nah - the only thing really mentioned in 'Lost Stars' that I recall having an X-Wing connection (beyond the obvious fighters) was the Gozanti being used to pick up Vader. First reference to it outside of 'Rebels' and our game, which is always nice to see.

The Raider still remains unmentioned and unseen outside of FFG materials...

Never played it, I'd have to find a group somewhere. They do remind me of RPG classes though. (Would that make real Mary-sue characters Munchkin players IRL?)

Rex is going to be in the next one if the preview clip is anything to go by. He's going to be getting Nam-flashbacks of the Clone Wars.

Drat. FOILED AGAIN!

*twirls mustache*

They might have wedding, it's not impossible. There just can't be any Jedi capable of defeating Vader by the time of ANH. If Ezra hangs up the sword and cape, it might be enough. Kanan is blind, and I think that might disqualify him from being the "Hope". It might go poorly for their kids though... Ren still has a few Jedi to kill of his own.

Just to clear it up, everyone has the access to force to some degree right? They said no life without midichlorians, they're like mitochondria; even a house plant could sense the force a little right?

Sooo, it was my understanding that every living thing had access to the force at a cellular level. You might have more or less aptitude depending on your genetic pre-disposition for midichlorian density (my father had it, etc, etc), but if you're alive you still have it; even if you have to work harder than other naturals to access it.

That sound right? Sound silly?

A- The only people who can defeat Vader are Luke and Leia. Period. The most powerful Jedi in the galaxy were no match for Sidious and Vader at the close of the Republic and there are no more Jedi who are a match for Sidious or Vader, period. Luke and Leia can only win because of their familial connection.

B- My assumption - prior to The Phantom Menace - was that anyone could become a Jedi (or Force Adept) through the proper training. And I'm hoping that nu-canon allows for that possibility (although with the blind monk in Rogue One , I wouldn't bet too much on that, although he does pretty well for a blind guy from what we've seen so far).

Maybe we'll see the Raider around the same time they introduce the Gunboat.

The Gunboat is basically a compact Raider with Ordinance Tubes. Stuffed inside a Lambda.

I love the shape, I love the idea from a strategic standpoint: Unless they make it cost like 89 points, I think we'll see it in X-wing around the same time as the Sun Crusher.

Can there be one topic on this whole forum that does not contain whining about the Gunboat?

Fillers are not just episodic content, but literally a waste of time. If its not just a filler, a time filler, something to add just to pass time for without purpose outside of that … than it ain't a filler.

I'm just waiting for the Far Orbit to turn up. We've had Task Force: Shantipole, I can dream.

Yep and even then it doesn't come down to ability or defeating Vader, but Vader turning from the dark side at the last moment to save Luke from the same fate as him.

Gozantis appear all over the place before Rebels, the Imperial Refit is new though. Shame as I wanted to see the Black Sun version appear in X-Wing.

Rey might not be a mary sue, but she's certainly a very flat and boring character. Hopefully they'll do something to make her more interesting in episode 8. (hint: like maybe actually have some conflict)

But this is getting off topic, isn't there a new Rebels episode out today?

Haven't seen the new ep today, but I wanted to quote and mention the mistake a lot of people make about Ep7:

It's Finn's story, not Rey's.

He has the obstacles to overcome. He has the forward momentum in the story. He has the 'all is lost' moments. He has the deep character flaws that he must master, and does to bring the story forward.

Calling Rey a "Mary Sue" in a story that isn't even hers is pretty foolish. We've glimpsed her character flaw - more than anything, she wants family. Do you think that Luke Skywalker , after all his familial problems, is going to provide that to her? Or will these "Knights of Ren" with their close bond tempt her when Luke pushes her away thanks to his own scars?

It'd be like calling Leia a Mary Sue in Episode 4. She succeeds in getting the plans away from Vader, getting help from Obi-Wan, finding the exit down the garbage chute, resisting interrogation, pawning Vader and Tarken off on Dantooine... when does SHE fail as a character when she's called on?

Oh yeah, she also correctly calls that it was too easy to get away. Everything she says is right! Holy hell, she's even a Princess , talk about wish fulfillment! The only reason we're not calling her a Mary Sue is that 1) she's a part of our childhood, 2) it was written by a man, and 3) it's a stupid, overused way to say "I don't like this strong female character" without sounding sexist.

Sorry, but you're being ridiculous if you think TFA is the story of a single protagonist.

That's like saying Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure was the story of the journey of Bill S. Preston, and Ted Logan is a supporting character.

Exactly.

We get to see Ezra and Hera's relationship grow, we get some more history on Hera, who has been kind of mysterious up to this point (we knew the general details), and we now have this huge rivalry between Hera and Thrawn. "But no phoenix squadron pilots died this episode so it must be a filler." (Last one is sarcasm)

Hera's over emphasis on the Ghost crew and Ryloth rebels, especially between Kanan and her father has has me thinking somebody's dying because of Thrawn by the season finale. I feel like regardless of what happens to Thrawn its going to bad for the rebels in a permanent way.

Towards the end of every season so far the show has evolved the rebels into a different stage of rebellion. What will this season do?

A Gozanti was shown in the background in TPM, think it was canon before Lost Stars

But we've never seen or read about Imperial Gozantis before Rebels.

Thanks guys.

It was really good to see how a lot of you have reacted to this episode. You really made me think about my initial reaction.

Spoiler free review of this episode - http://superdstuff.com/star-wars-rebels-heras-heroes/

It might not be the most positive review but I've given it a lot more thought than just labelling it as filler.

With all the talk from Thrawn, I would be very upset if the Rebels aren't learning from their interactions just as he is. He's so transparent and open with his objectives regarding learning the enemy, surely the Rebels can get the hint.

Of course he should be the master tactician, but his tendency for disclosure of his plans is a bit too apparent...

Many viewers did nto read the books, and you can't exactly include an off-screen narrator in a TV series, but still need to present the character's way of thinking. No other way to do it other that through his own words.

Star Wars has never been about a single person. The OT is about Luke, Han, and Leia, the PT (though to a much lesser extent) was about Anakin, Obi-wan, and Padme. I agree that Finn is a main character, but to say it's about him solely is ridiculous. Also, in my comment, I literally said Rey really isn't a mary sue. That said, she's still a flat character with no adversity. And comparing Leia to Rey is silly. Leia actually faces adversity, but still has development, and her strong moments. Rey never has an actual adversity in the movie. When they need a pilot, she's an expert, when they need a mechanic, she's an expert, when she's captured, she's suddenly a master of the force, and when she's chased down, she suddenly can defeat someone who's trained all his life with a lightsaber, and this is the first time she's used one in a fight. I'm not saying some of that can't be justified away with canon explanations (e.g. she had a flight sim that she played alot when she was a kid), but she is a very bland, boring character. She has the potential to be a good character, but so far, the only interesting character that came from Episode 7 was Finn.

But this is horribly off-topic, if you really want to discuss the flaws of Ep7, start a thread about it, this is about Rebels :)
