STAR WARS: REBELS Discussion Thread!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

I am giving it my all to watch Rebels and like it. I even make up excuses for it when certain things happen. At first, I super dug it since I got to see AT-ATs, Stormtroopers, Original Chewbacca (Zeb) and Original 3PO in the backrounds... So much love for the series, but that nostalgia all started to list to the right and veer off course towards a mask and bandaid with this 2nd season.

I mean... The first season was alright-ish. In the game world, twas the first act that gave us the overarching story, the characters and bad guys. 2nd season is very much like the 2nd act of a game, where we get to actually talk and explore our companions backstories and even our enemies. Which in this context, is kinda coolio. Meaning we get to see a bunch of new areas, new weapons, armor, characters and mechanics. Except that's not what happened. All 5 individual character story arcs are exactly the same. As in, each beat is exactly the same:

The rebels are given a mission.

One of them meet a person related to their past. Ezra-Tseebo, Zeb-Chava, Here-Cham, Kanan-Fenn, Sabine-Ketsu and (my favorite) Chopper-Original Leg Replacement.

That person or thing related to their past derails the mission.

Then our rebels are forced into a dilemma between the mission and the person.

Then that person ends up being the key to both the mission and the rebels personal strife.

Then role credits.

Like...COME ON!!!

After the first 4 I realized the pattern and just rolled my eyes. No wonder after even the first two I bored out of my goard since I could already follow the pre-rehearsed beats to their natural conclusion. Twas just the finite deets that maketh said episode somewhat distinct from one another.

P.S. While in rant mode. I used to like the lightsaber because it was closer to the original movie called 'Star Wars' now 'A New Hope' when Obi-Wan and Vader faced off. Now... It sucks and looks stupid. It's sooo unique nothing else in the movies, games, comics or otherwise looks like them.

Dubya Tee Eff Dave Faloni?

Now I understand how the thread title can be misleading but oddly enough this thread is only for discussing how good the show is. Dissenting opinion will be swiftly dealt with by PSA.

Yet another Phoenix left behind...

I thought this episode was a bit lackluster and felt kind of rushed. The whole 'transmitters keep the creatures away' thing seemed just a tad convenient for the sake of convenience, and I don't think they ever stated why, it was just because the story called for it.

And really? Two competent force users managed to overshoot their target by as much as they did? I will admit, I couldn't help but just laugh at how stupid of a way to die that could have been.

I feel like this was the weakest episode of the season next to Blood Sisters.

I think it may be a bit too early to call Ezra competent...

I love Kanan and Hera. Such an amazing portrayal of their relationship.

Episode went about a minute too long.

Should have ended with Kanan and Hera's shared moment.

I like the show because it's starwars. I wait eagerly for the X-Wing to make it's appearance as well as the conclusion of Ashoka and Anakin's storyline. I like the show just fine. If you think my criticism is unfounded and has very little basis then please tell me so.

Wb5K, do you realize just who the target audience for the show is for? Do you understand that the original audience meant for the original movie some 40 years ago was also around that same age? You speak of simple plots and overreaching game story arcs, like that is a little bit offensive to the viewer. I don't intend to sound disrepectful, but you need to see the whole picture here.

40 years ago first trilogy came out, geared for family watching. 20 years later, the prequel trilogy followed for the next generational family where the parents got to share their experiences and love of Star Wars with their kids. Now, almost 20 years later it is happening again. Three generations of fans for one genre.

The show is meant for a younger audience, while allowing tie-ins to what has gone before for older family members. That doesn't mean you should criticize on the intellectual story telling of the writing. So what if the stories are not up to your standards of gaming experience. I bet when you were the preferred viewer's age you would see this show as great viewing. How else do you get to be more demanding of story content than by experiencing good shows while you were young.

So after watching this episode..they got themselves a nice little anti-ground assault defense there.

Shore up the defenses with a shield generator and some planetary-based anti-orbital and anti-air weaponry and you've got yourself a base that will require the Empire to lay siege to in order to take it out, or divert a massive military effort to dislodge.

Dicer is probably still sitting that cave...

I'm telling you phoenix squadron gets it worse than stormtroopers; at least the troopers don't have to be hero-armor for their officers.

Nice to see Phoenix Squadron is just as useless on the ground as they are in space...

The jetpack joke was pretty funny.

Poor Dicer though.

The last few minutes were the most interesting.

Anyone catch the subtle imperial march playing as Ezra failed to connect with the spider by the fence? I think his drifting to the dark side is preventing him from connecting like he used to.

Also earlier in the show we see two little owl birdie things. At the end, when the 'dark side' music is kicking in, you see only one... WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Where the ever loving F**K were her jet boots though!?

I called it a Ratowl. Probably its actual name or something.

But yeah I noticed that and found it curious.

The only thing about the episode that really bothered me was that the heros didn't even worry about or mention saving Dicer. Also, does anyone find it strange that Rebel personal "report" to teenagers. (random pilot #27 and sabine) guess being a main character gives you rank in the rebellion. The funny thing is we could have gotten the same dialouge, just with Sato instead of Sabine, and it would have made more sense.

Phoenix Squadron is probably the biggest pool of death meat since red shirts. They just die like nobody's business.

Man .... next week is gonna be sick!

So I think Ezra failing to connect with the Spider is more about showing off his pride. He's been doing so good at connecting lately, and this is showing him fail for the first time. He's going to want to get more powerful, so he doesn't fail again.

Also I'm pissed that Darth Maul doesn't show up until the finale. Not because I'm in love with Maul or anything... but because he was in the trailer back in January, before the mid-season premiere. Please Disney...... don't do that again. Don't give us all the glitz and glamour of the entire season in one preview ever again. One of the things I LOVE about this show is the surprises we got in the past.... and if they are going to ruin 80% of those surprises in one preview... it seriously diminishes the impact of the show.

Fortunately there's a lot of bigger surprises waiting for us.

I assume the Rebellion is a meritocracy. Despite her young age, Sabine is what passes for a veteran in an organization that's only been around a couple of years.

Alternatively, rank is determined by how wanted you are by the Empire. Which puts Sabine up pretty high as "that Mandalore girl that blows up all our **** and leaves graffiti behind".

I love Kanan and Hera. Such an amazing portrayal of their relationship.

You can tell Disney is just a little uncomfortable with the inter-species thing though.

I can't tell that from watching the show. It looks natural and unforced to me.

They were not even trying to be subtle about how bad things are going to get.

Oh, yeah,

I'm totally, 100% certain that Disney, a company that has a variety of non human characters, some of which are in romantic situations, that just got Star Wars and is aware Twi'Leks are rather ahem, beloved, by fans, are 100% uncomfortable.

Here's a thought.

Maybe they're just not keen on showing us hot Kanan on Hera action, even if it is just a quick kiss or snog. And here's an even better thought.

Perhaps even, they're sure we're a smart enough audience to not need such a standard way of saying, "yeah they in love yo" even though they are so clearly a couple. Which they've never hidden, just never outright said because, thankfully, the audience is clever enough to understand that dynamic.

At least I certainly hope it is.

IT'S SO CUTE

FYI it's also confirmed canonically by Pablo Hidalgo that Humans and Twi-Leks can produce offspring together. Some are seen in The Clone Wars.

On the farm of the clone who deserted. They weren't his kids, but they were confirmed to be half human half twi-lek.

just something to think about lol

Because they don't kiss? It looks like a completely normal, healthy relationship. There really is no reason for it to be more explicit than it has been.

Though, I need more Kanan being nervous around Cham...

I find it sensual and romantic that they don't snog around in public... !
