STAR WARS: REBELS Discussion Thread!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

I think people are also forgetting that this is still a kids show. I really do not think they COULD of shown/will show Ashoka being killed.

Villains they show being offed, but they left it for this special episode, and they never SHOW the deathblow. Just the bodies (and even then they don't focus on them). Even Kanan's injury was cut away from, then kept covered the entire time.

Heroes on a show like this on that sort of channel won't ever be SHOWN to die. So I can totally take the image of her disappearing into darkness as her death. Just in a more audience friendly way.

Time will tell though. All in all the finale was amazing. Any time they show Vader they really make up for what people thought of him post-prequels. He is once again a scary, dangerous, powerful monster again. Nothing can stop him, just slow him down a bit. Riding in on the top of his Advanced was SO AMAZING.

Oh you sweet summer child.

I remember seeing some dear clones in TCW's final breaths, and everyone here forgets the third episode of the first season. We witness a hologram of a dear characters execution and see her mummified corpse. In TCW we also see a few true Jedi last stands.

There are cutaway deaths, sure. Minister Tua, Dieser, Grint, other guy... But the implication and proof are strong enough to know that they are dead (ok, not quite so much Dieser, but really...)

Well technically Obi-wan defeated Anakin Skywalker, not Vader.

And technically, Anakin is the chosen one, not Vader.

I mean executor full on crashes into DSII but it still manages to land partially intact somewhere on Endor (or nearby).

I've never heard that before and have trouble believing anyone would think that the Executor could have survived the impact with the DSII, especially considering it was destroyed shortly after that. So without a canon source I don't buy it.

I really do not think they COULD of shown/will show Ashoka being killed.

Sure they could, they wouldn't show her dismembered head in Vader's hand. But they could've shown her dead.

But let's use critical thinking here...

We have no death blow, and we see her walking away.

On the other hand we have Darth Maul who was cut in half and dropped down some sort of pit, who wasn't really dead. We have Boba Fett who was thrown in the Sarlacc Pit and in the EU at least returned, and may of returned in the new canon.

Plus from a narrative stance, her walking away as a draw is more powerful than simply having her killed. That lets her return another time, perhaps even several times to face Vader. Which will make for a much greater impact when/if he does kill her. I would actually be surprised if he doesn't, but when it happens there will be no doubt about her fate.

So many Force Unleashed easter eggs in this episode! Sadly I think this was the closest we'll ever get to seeing Sam Witwer reprise his role of Starkiller.

  • Sam Witwer as Maul, same actor who did Starkiller.
  • He Blinds Kanan, Kanan is now a mirror for Rham Kota, blinded by Sam Witwer
  • Kanan flips his lightsaber into that reverse grip just like in TFU.

We now need a "Blind Kanan" crew card - "Any time you are instructed to skip your perform action step, if you are not stressed, you may still proceed with your perform action step. You may also attack enemy ships that you are touching".

We've only seen her back, maybe he ripped off her face as she was screaming something awful.

And since they're heat based, there's probably a lot of melting there. It's like Raiders of the Lost Ark all over again.

I'm sure her force ghost is still pretty smokin' though.

Edited by BenderIsGreat

I'm not saying she won't be back. I just would rather they stuck to their guns and killed off someone important.

And the end of this episode COULD be them softening the blow for the kids, or it could be them leaving it open for later.

Dicer is probably still perfectly fine. They even left her A-Wing there so she could just saunter back into camp on her own time.

A perfectly good A-Wing.

And the Rebellion is stuck for ships and material, as we are constantly reminded.

Haha I did think that was a bit odd. Rex was just cuddled in their nest, but no one even mentioned Dicer once they got in there.

She was wearing red so...

I didn't mind the lightsaber helicoptering because of that old thing about ninjas using giant kites to get into places. No seriously, look it up. Giant kites.

Completely ignoring the fact that flying is what kites actually do. Quite different from what laser swords do.

Kanan is now 100% new canon Rahm Kota. Jedi, blinded by a lightsaber, important figure in the Rebellion, his apprentice balancing between the light and the dark, even the hairstyle and clothing (incomplete armor, a belt accross the chest) matches!

Hah! Yes.

It is an elegant solution to a problem we all postulated.

You know what's an even more elegant solution?

Going "The galaxy is really big." and moving on.

I don't know, I just love the conversation.

"Revenge is not the Jedi way"

"I am no Jedi"

Which is probably a bit problematic with leaving her in a Sith temple...

Indeed. I think when she returns it's going to be NOT as a protagonist.

Because there isn't a body you can't prove that Asoka is dead or alive.

There was a body. They showed it walking away. Alive.

I think people are also forgetting that this is still a kids show. I really do not think they COULD of shown/will show Ashoka being killed.

You know what would have done that a million times better? Just NOT SHOWING HER AFTER THE EXPLOSION!

If you show Vader walking away and not her, it makes it very easy to assume she's dead.

But you are telling the audience that she is not dead when YOU SHOW HER NOT DEAD.

And technically, Anakin is the chosen one, not Vader.

Technically, they are the same person. The idea that they are different is a purely philosophical one.

Well yes, but the person I was quoting there was saying that Obi-Wan had defeated Anakin not Vader... So following that logic I made that statement.

Filoni directly stated that that it was intentionally ambiguous and strongly implied that the reason for that was that even he and the other higher ups weren't sure if she should die here or not so getting aggressively defensive on one absolute or the other in this Strodiger's Snips argument is pointless.

Anyway he did confirm that one way or another her role in Rebels is over because a character as significant as her would demand to much focus be pulled away from the shows main characters. He also said that because of the relationship she and Vader have keeping her active during the OT time period would take too much away from Luke and Vader's arc so if she is alive we won't see her until after RotJ. Which is fitting because she blames herself for Anakin's fall and a self imposed exile away from other possible future jedi would make since to her because of that.

It was in one of the old comics, Wedge finds stray TIE's on a patrol around Endor, follows them and finds the remains of Executor on the ground. He shoots torpedoes into a cliff above it and buries it under the rubble. I've posted it on the forums before but I cannot find it anywhere. It's clearly not canon but my point was that even something as absurd as that has at one point been written. Again I'm not arguing for her death.

I remember seeing this.

Just another bit of bad oldcanon that's been erased...

Frankly I am not a fan of Endor even appearing at any time before ROTJ...

Alive or dead, we can be civil about it.

These are my serious thoughts:
-I thought it was lovely poetry for how they paralleled Yoda/Luke with Maul/Ezra.

-Somebody else pointed out (rightly) that Tano and Rex's conversation about experience is a perfect mirror for their first ever conversation back in TCW. It's a nice touch. It shows how far she's come and bookends their relationship nicely.

-I don't want her dead. I don't know if she is. Personally I feel like the writers played it safe by makign it vague and thus leaving her available for future work. But story-wise I feel this was the perfect time to kill her and I'm a little sad they didn't/didn't do it more clearly if they did. She is the perfect foil to Luke's "I will not fight you." It underscores how tragically Vader has fallen that she offers herself up and he can't receive her care anymore. But it keeps with how, while Luke sees the good in him still, she no longer does. Look, we can't all be special and skilled. At some point we fall in love with characters who aren't the main character of the larger narrative (that's Luke) and she needs to go by the wayside or else it undermines Luke, the true focal point of the larger narrative Vader is a part of in the OT. Also, she vows to kill him to avenge Anakin. That in my mind is a key difference. So while she is a foil for Luke in this way it still distinguishes her and maybe is why Vader can't be vulnerably turned by her. Because in the end she rejects him. Luke does not. So it makes sense that, like Luke, she can get really close and have such a prized relationship... but that final choice precludes actual conversion. As for leaving her alive, it's just annoying to me. If she appears post-ROTJ due to exile that frustrates me. Yoda, Obi-wan, Tano. All these MEGA FORCE USERS/JEDI around while the Rebellion is perpetually on its knees and you can't be involved AT ALL? You can't file paperwork, park cruisers, babysit the kids of soldiers, or just offer KRIFFING advice? Really? Is the galaxy just littered with people who could've made a MASSIVE difference but sat this one out? That's lame.*

-*On this note I think it's worse for Tano if that's the route she takes. Obi-wan is looking after Luke so I get his removal and he does die getting Luke to the Rebellion. He intended to train him, thought of him as their "last hope," and even calmed Luke into using the Force for that final shot on the Death Star. So he did fine. Yoda, at least in the books, is portrayed as going into exile because he knows that to defeat Palpatine on his own he will have to tap into power so raw and overwhelming that it wold compromise him. To do this would surely mean defeating Palpatine but end up with something even worse in his place, an evil Yoda. So he bites the lesser evil bullet and exiles himself while helping from afar once Luke arrives. Okay, sucky but fine. But Tano? Tano should be helping and invovled (as the show has her being thus far) until victory or death. So I feel saving her for later or as an exile post ROTJ is lame for her. Plus she is too perfect a foil for Luke. Her death would fit both her character and underscore how important Luke is even more. So story-wise I feel she should have died. Never showing her walking into the temple would've been perfect. Vader crawling out damaged would show he survived after an epic fight but is still the one walking away. Done. Leave it.

Great season finale. Very epic. Loved how this single hour brought together all 7 movies and 6 seasons of the Clone Wars.

Moving forward for future eps:

It’s a big galaxy. It needs to be made clear that the Core Episodic Saga films are just a sliver of a much greater struggle. Not everything is in the live action movies (aka the Skywalker saga) has to be connected with the Lothal Rebels. Just because Chopper and the Ghost aren’t on Hoth, doesn’t mean they’re gone.

The galaxy has millions of inhabited planets. There is not just a single Rebel cell with a room full of heroes bringing down a galactic-wide military machine.

Think about the epic events of Band of Brothers, they were a fraction of the events of WWII. Now multiple that by millions. Even with the Marvel Universe with SHIELD, Avengers, and Guardians of the Galaxy, New Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, etc) the cross-over is fairly limited.

The galaxy is big enough for Ezra and Luke to coexist.

End the Ahsoka Tano storyline. Is she dead, is she alive? Either way she’s too much of a distraction. Staying with the Rebels would surely mean their demise. The Rebels succeed because factions in the Empire feel they are not much of a threat.

If Vader thought Tano were alive, he would use every resource he had to hunt her down and destroy anyone harboring her.

Give Tano a filler episode down the line where we learn that on Malachor, Tano SAVED Vader. And she’s wrought with guilt about it. She realized, unlike Vader, she cared deeply for him and could never kill him.

She also realized that she does not want the return of the Jedi, the same bloated, corrupt, bureaucratic organization that allowed her to be framed and ousted her. And she knows anyone associated with her will be destroyed. So she chose the path that would ensure the success of the Rebels. She’s gone AWOL and pulled a Cut Lawquane and now has her own family and she’s never going back.

Maul is Vader’s puppet. Vader sent the Inquisitors to their doom on Malachor, because the Inquisitors could not kill Kanan or Ezra.

The thing that die hard fans want? Could it be the introduction of Han Solo and/or Boba Fett? I'm hoping it's more Hondo. Everything's better with Hondo Ohnaka.

Totally agree with the two above posts. / Two last posts on the previous page. dammit board.

Filoni directly stated that that it was intentionally ambiguous

Then he completely failed at it.

Ambiguous would have been not showing her after the explosion.

Showing her walking away is not leaving it ambiguous. It's showing her being alive. If it was his intention to be ambiguous, then he did it wrong.

The thing that die hard fans want? Could it be the introduction of Han Solo and/or Boba Fett? I'm hoping it's more Hondo. Everything's better with Hondo Ohnaka.

I would LOVE for there to be some Boba Fett. Because there is very little of Boba being cool in the actual canon.

In the OT, he does very little besides stand around looking cool and dying like a punk. And in TCW, he's not cool at all.

Don't get me wrong, I love Fett, but that love comes entirely from his look, and from the EU. It would be nice if the canon actually showed some evidence of him being the most feared bounty

Delayed reactions. In chronological order.

Show start: pretty psyched!

Rex is worried; this is gonna be bad. (In a good way.) :D

*Floor crack* Noooo, Indy!

Crossgurd lightsabers! Everywhere! Why aren't you looting them!?

Ohhh new inquisitor! She sounds oddly familiar though....

*Floor crack* Dammit, Indy!

Darth Mall. WE MEET AGAIN.

RIGHT ON CHOPPER! GTA(S) BANTHA HERDERS!

Maul... Maul, you doing the creepy.

Oh wait, he's a good guy now? Sa-weeeeet!

Maul still seems good...ish... He's doing that one dark side thing though....

Ezra's first dark side encounter. Was rooting for Seventh Sister to turn him, but Maul turned up the kindred spirit dial up to 11 and thus won the solid gold " Evilus Seductor Maxisiomo" award.

I SAW YOU PRESS THAT BACK-UP BUTTON NEW GUY. YOU ARE FOOLING NO-ONE.

The rest of the Inquisit-team! Form of flying hellichopper: activate!

Don't trust him! He's gonna drop you!

Oh..... or not. Hummm...

Everyone fighting; together!

Climbing the pyramid, gotta get to the top. Platforming at it's finest.

"Ezra'll be fine. You trained him." Well duh, but what about the rest of us?

*Gasp* NO! Seventh Sister! It was not meant to be... :(

NO! Inquisit-team! Your copters did not save you.... (Though to be fair it took Kanan a while to adapt tot the copter-kick technique. ;) )

KANAN! YOUR EYES! Maul, it's on like Donkey-Kong .

DON'T TOUCH IT EZRA! IT'S EVIL!

Over the edge he goes - you go Asoka! Now save Ezra before he goofs up!

Vader makes his entrance. Star-fighter-surfing confirmed.

Vader. Asoka. Annie?

So. Many. Emotions. So. Many. Feels.

A master, and an apprentice.

NOOO! Asoka!

Ending scene: Do they have cybernetic eyes in the future? Is Asoka alive? The new Inquisitor just fell down, is she alive too? Ezra's thinking like a Sith now....

Credits.

FRIGGIN EPIC.

Wait wait wait wait, we're ignoring the obvious.

They're both doing a walk of shame.

Ergo, there was no battle.

They banged.

yeah stumbles on to it last night as there was NOTHING on regular TV.. very impressed will have to get the discs when they come out.. I would have to say its on par with rebels now. Maybe even a tad better..

And here are my funny thoughts and reactions:

Kanan: Are you okay?
Ezra (from pit floor): I'm fine, I'll catch up.
Kanan: Okay
Me: WHAT? You're warned your apprentice may go dark, you're in a Sith Temple, on a planet FORBIDDEN TO JEDI, you just got separated, there's at least one Inquisitor here from a group of at least 8 you know about, AND YOU'RE LEAVING EZRA ALONE?

(Helicopter flying Sith blade happens)
Me: WTF?

Inner child Me: You saw that too?
Me: Yeah, that makes no sense.
Inner child Me: It's kinda cool.

Ezra: I'm Jabba.

Me: JABBA? You're still using Jabba as an alter ego? DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO?

Maul: I've lived here alone all by myself.
Ezra: Yeah, well I can't help you.
Me: Ezra. Think for a moment. What the figurative-fu*k has this creepy guy been eating all this time? Obviously something is up. Do you see plants? A Space-Wendy's? No. You do not. You do not see plants or a Space-Wendy's. THINK BOY.

Maul: You have to use your anger.
Ezra: Oh gee, I thought it was bad but I guess I'll give it a shot.
Me: EZRA YOU TURD4BRAINS HOW ARE YOU NOT CLUING INTO THIS?

Maul: My name is Maul. (Removes hood.)

Ezra: Okay!
Me: Ezra. Jabba. Whatever your name is. Does "maul" mean something different in Space-English? And look at this guy. Nobody has horns and covers their face in red FOR LOVE.

Maul: You have to trust me.
Ezra: Well, Kanan has been my master and saved me countless times but okay. Let's give anger a shot. Should I close one monolithic stone door behind us or put all 5 between me and my friends?
Me: &^&%&^#%@&%#^*@#@*&$#@*$*@$@*

(Outright flying with helicopter Sith lightsabers happens)
Me: (Looks at inner child me)

Inner child Me: Yeah, that's dumb.

Me: Dude, did you know Sarah Michelle Geller is the voice for Lady Inquisitor?
Friend on phone: No way!
(Lady Inquisitor dies immediately)
Me: Uh, yeah... she was.

Evil Temple Voice: Who goes there?
Ezra: I do, Ezra Pridgit.
Me: Oh, NOW YOU USE YOUR REAL NAME, JABBA?

Ezra: Guys! Maul tricked us!
Me: NO EZRA! There is no "US." Maul tricked YOU. Kanan, why aren't you pausing the fight to STINKEYE the Galactic-SH*T out of Ezra right now?

(Ezra's lightsaber is destroyed)
Me: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not the gun-saber! Jabba, this weapon is you life!

Vader: Revenge is not the Jedi way.
Tano: I am no Jedi.
Me: Uh... is anybody else getting a LOTR "I am no man" vibe here?

Ezra: What happened to your eyes?
Kanan: We'll talk later.
Me: **** straight "we'll talk later." My eyes were symbolically sacrificed to show how you LACKED THE VISION to see the creepy red guy with horns subsisting off darkness in a Sith Temple on a forbidden planet was maybe, kind of, I don't know, NOT TRUSTWORTHY. But it's cool. Kanan didn't need those anyway. (SCREAMS)

(Kanan returns and Hera hugs him)
Me: HERA, *****t, KISS the man already! I promise he won't even see it coming!

So, how long till Star Wars Celebration 2016 and the Season 3 trailer?

They can get Kanan cybernetics right? I mean Wolfe has a cyber-eye and he got that years ago, why not Kanan?

I feel like they're going to use the "old standby must cope with new disability" hook for a while, but in the end there's not much reason to put off getting prosthesis unless you just want to Kota it everywhere.

Also, you know this leaves Agent Kallus as the last villain standing. (Vader doesn't count.)

Edited by OneKelvin

Kallus is totally gonna defect / die trying to defect.

I honestly didn't mind the helisabering when I thought it was just the new guy's special ability. But when all 3 of them suddenly started doing it I was like, "Okay, that's really dumb. Why have you never used this before now?"

Ezra: Guys! Maul tricked us!

Me: NO EZRA! There is no "US." Maul tricked YOU. Kanan, why aren't you pausing the fight to STINKEYE the Galactic-SH*T out of Ezra right now?

Because no eyes?

They can get Kanan cybernetics right? I mean Wolfe has a cyber-eye and he got that years ago, why not Kanan?

He was likely a Republic soldier at the time. And likely had access to Republic resources.

Remember, the Rebels don't have **** atm. No medical frigates here.
