STAR WARS: REBELS Discussion Thread!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

They called it "Shadow Caster," but whether that's the name of the model or of that specific ship wasn't clear.

Shadow Caster looks a bit odd to me, it doesn't really match the Star Wars aesthetic. It looks more like the Defiant from DS9.

Better than I expected after all those TCW droid episodes.

I like the cargo ship, its ugly as hell just like it should be ;)

In this episode we witnessed another Imperial-0 class Star Destroyer in action, not well known member of Imperial-class family, very prevalent in the corner of the Galaxy in which Phoenix Group operates. The main difference between vessels of this class and Imperial-I and -II models is that it is unarmed. It shouldn't be viewed as a design flaw - the sheer presence of such a large vessel should dicourage any attempts to opose the will of the Emperor, and the lack of any bettlefield value is compensated by greatly reduced manufacture costs.

Why not? It's practically a Ywing cockpit stretched upwards, with the Ywing Engines on the ship of a YT-whatever circle chassis.

OK, this might seem like a heresy, but I don't believe there is such thing as " Star Wars aesthetic". SW is extremely inconsistent when it comes to things like engines, weapons etc. Just look at this:

Xw1.jpg

TIEfighter2-Fathead.png

Do you see any similarities?

Anything that'd make you think they come from the same movie?

X-wing:

- long, aerodynamic shape with "wings"

- visible, very long gun barrels

- big, cylindrical engines with visible exhaust

- astromech

TIE/ln:

- "eyebal with strange vertical panels" shape

- tiny gun barrels

- barely visible dots for engines

- some kind of solar panels

To make things even better, the difference between firepower of those two crafts isn't nearly as big as visual difference between guns would suggest, TIE is faster despite the tiny engines, and the Y-wing, with HUGE engine-to-rest-of-the-craft ratio, is slower than those two.

And there is also the Millenium Falcon wihich has yet another totally different propulsion system and the Death Star which doesn't seem to care that engines need to be visible.

AND all the ships I mentioned are from just the very first movie!

Of course you can say that a vessel doesn't match Imperial aesthetic, or that it doesn't look like a rebel ship, or like a Corelian-made freighter, but can't say "it doesn't match Star Wars aesthetic" because such thing never existed.

Looks like a variant on the Havoc, actually.

I like it - would be happy to fly one too.

OK, this might seem like a heresy, but I don't believe there is such thing as " Star Wars aesthetic".

It's not heresy, it's common sense.

Star Wars is an entire galaxy full of different races and manufacturers, each with their own ideas of design aesthetic for starships.

It makes sense to say there's a "Sienar starfighter aesthetic" or a "Kuat capital ship aethetic", but a Star Wars aesthetic? There's no such thing.

Chopper is one of my favorite characters. I really enjoyed this episode. And I don't mind the inclusion of a new protocol droid character. I enjoyed learning about Chopper's backstory.

I do want to know what happened to the captain of that cargo ship.

Did chopper kill him? or is he the Rebels' prisoner now?

I actually really enjoyed tonight's episode. I didn't go into it with any expectations, and found myself laughing at some of the jokes thrown in there. I can see Marvin AP-5 quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in Rebels.

Did anyone else watch the Rebels Recon for the episode? Probably the best Recon so far, in my opinion. And I really enjoyed a certain detail they included in the trailer for next week's episode.

Recon was great.

Dave Filoni totally voices Chopper.

At Celebration last year a little girl asked him at the Rebels panel if he voiced Chopper. Dave, having a weakness of not being able to tell kids when he can't answer things, walked all the way over to her and whispered in her ear. It was great.

That triggered all my d'awwwww.

Kind of a letdown waiting 2 weeks for a side story after the big tease last episode; probably disappointed me more than I realized. Also, Alan Rickman-bot was sad to listen to throughout the episode. He also kind of looks like Tom from Toonami. If I get the chance I'd like to rewatch it with different expectations, because all the Chopper stuff was great.

As for the Star Wars aesthetic, the best way to describe it is that anything non-Imperial looks like someone grabbed something out of the kitchen and glued rocket boosters somewhere to it. The Shadow Caster fits that, though its more of a modern waffle iron than some of the older ships.

First I haven't see the episode. Second I'm not upset at the spoilers since it came out on TV last night (as opposed to streaming several days early).
So we're good.

Not having seen the episode I'm talking from a rather limited knowledge base. But I was reading a blog somewhere, I can't seem to find it again, and he was very disappointed.

He described Chopper as mean and nasty, very self-centered, etc. Also that he goes off for his own purposes leaving the lives of his crew in the balance. The blogger goes on to compare R2-D2 and Anikin's relationship and best friends going beyond what other's realize to Chopper's constant complaining, snarky comments and being only self-serving?

I'm sharing what someone else wrote so please don't get 'all up in my face'.
Rather I'm asking if anyone else sees this is are they way off the mark. Unfortunately I won't be able to watch any Rebels for at least another week. :(

Does anyone else thing the season finale "Twilight of the Apprentice" will feature Anakin and Ahsokas ship from TCW?

Wasn't it destroyed in the Mandalore arc in season 5?

The cast of Star Wars: Rebels is a family. Chopper is like the cantankerous grandpa war veteran of the group: doesn't want to accept he isn't in charge any more, isn't afraid to express his emotions, but has knowledge and abilities that the other members don't - and he IS a part of the family. Real families don't kick annoying members out just because they're annoying.

And what's more, he actually DOES know when they need him or don't, and comes through when they do. He WAS right about Hera not needing him on overwatch in the mission!

Though considering they were escaping under fire, I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion anyway.

Well, Chopper has tried to murder Ezra multiple times...

R2 = Dog

Chopper = Cat.

He does what he wants, but ultimately is loyal to his family.

His behavior in this episode didn't strike me as malicious or anything. Self centered sure, but not in an evil way.

I'd say it's a bit off the mark, but I'm not sure the comparison actually correlates to anything without reading it.

Anakin went after R2 in TCW because he never had his memory wiped. They could play it up as friendship, but it was ultimately a military re-acquisition of a walking datapad. Of course, Palpatine already had all that intel to feed to the enemy, so it just let Anakin run amok fueled by emotion that Papa Palps could later exploit.

Chopper is a part of the crew of the Ghost, not a single Jedi's pet. He's snarky and foul-mouthed, but loyal.

"Chopper doesn't have any friends" emphasizes how they sometimes treat him more as a tool than an equal. #droidlivesmatter

He's never asked for anything on screen but finally finds the replacement piece he needs. Instead of buying that for him first before completing the mission they ignore him and ridicule him. Maybe they already have one gift-wrapped for his birthday in the hold, but probably not.

He's angry and goes over to quickly buy the leg before they get back. It took him all of 10 seconds to get from the ship to the merchant. The ugnaught was complicating matters and then mentions the commotion. That's when Chopper should have given up and returned, but if the crew hadn't gotten back to the ship so ridiculously (forced-plot) fast he still would have made it back with the leg.

Wasn't it destroyed in the Mandalore arc in season 5?

never saw the whole series so I don't know myself

Obi Wan borrowed it and it was destroyed.

I think the "Apprentice" in those episode titles is probably intentionally misleading.

Obviously we all think Ahsoka first, but it could also refer to Ezra, who we've seen drifting closer to the dark side. It could also mean Darth Maul, who was "the apprentice" for a while, and who will likely die once and for all hopefully.

It was the review on av that hated on this episode so much. Then the review on ign loved this episode. Kinda funny in my opinion

Does anyone else thing the season finale "Twilight of the Apprentice" will feature Anakin and Ahsokas ship from TCW?

It got blown up during the Brothers Sith arc set on Mandalore. Obi-Wan tried to take off, and the Deathwatch blew it out of the sky. It was malfunctioning pretty badly anyway (Annie wasn't keeping it very well? That's weird) but oh well. It stands to reason there are other freighters like it, and I think it'd make a great Scum big ship. Its bay is even roomy enough to accommodate a Jedi star fighter.

It'd make sense if she found one and used it for sentimental reasons.
