STAR WARS: REBELS Discussion Thread!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

Really enjoyed this episode.

I didn't think I'd be looking forward to Zeb based stories, but I've been proven wrong twice since Christmas now. First time we get a beautifully different perspective on the force, and now we see a different side of Kallus, who was far from callous in the end.

I review Rebels each week, and do my best to stay spoiler free. It was very tough this week. I just wanted to go into detail on their relationship and how life must be for Kallus. Seeing Zeb's crew members greet him so warmly was a stark contrast to his situation. I felt sorry for him.

Rebels has been quite uneven lately. I hope it gets into a higher gear soon.

Where are the Inquisitors?

Are there many scifi tv shows which havent done an "enemy mine" episode at some point?

"Zeb and Karrus at Tenagra!"

Really enjoyed this episode.

They are coming, the preview for the next episode had them.

Ah. Cool.

I try not to watch previews for things. Want the whole thing to be fresh if I can help it.

Chopper. When the shields fall.

Ezra, his arms wide.

I really dug the Chopper/Imperial astromech throwdown. You could tell Chopper's been eager to really let loose on somebody!

Gotta admit though... Ive liked Kallus for a while, and his "Let them go... To their destruction, Let them go... I will watch them be destroyed", with that swelling music after watching his ties torn appart, and the front of his ARGHKITTENS!! peeling, really saved that Lasat/Starcluser episode from being a complete wash and turned it into something awesome.

'Rebels', as a series, benefits a LOT from watching on a huge TV in HD.

This episode, particularly, was rather breathtaking from shortly after they got to the cluster. The lighting and design of basically all of those scenes were just...wow.

Watching it on a laptop, it loses a lot of that - I wonder if some folks aren't missing out a bit on what all 'Rebels' is doing. But episodes like that one, pretty much ALL the episodes on Lothal - you could freeze any frame, and it practically looks like a Ralph McQuarrie painting. Not just in style, but, like... in person . You can lean in and see details in what look s like (but obviously isn't) brush strokes and everything.

It's really, really stunning.

So we've always enjoyed it for that, too. The characters are interesting, the setting is interesting, the music is fantastic (shades of Bear McCreary, sometimes), but the art can be...wow.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Kallus defecting later on in the season...

I hope somthing really big happens first. You can't just have an instant side-swap. Maybe something like Prince Zuko in Avatar.

Absolutely agree. It's one thing when it is 'good guy' vs 'bad guy (from a certain point of view); but when you put the shoe on the other foot and realize the bad guy isn't bad at all... then the conundrum sets in.

I don't know... I spend most of the time watching Rebels with a blank expression on my face and little to no engagement.

Maby I'm not enough of a kid at heart, but I highly doubt that considering what people say about me in general and the fact that I actually work with kids and teenagers every day (which kinda requires you to be a kid at heart).

I don't know... it's just not engaging me.
Feels too much like a kids show, still.

And that's a problem, when all of the stuff gets canonicized by simply existing in the show.
Stupid and illogical stuff that you'd expect from a kids show are now suddenly truth and canon in the rest of the SW universe as well, because it was in a kids show.

Kinda like if the old Ewok movies and the Droids cartoon was considered canon. (yes, I'm comparing it to those)

From Kallus' point of view, not being one to ask questions the Empire isn't that bad.

aaand back to the morality of Star Wars and the Empire, which is one of the central themes of Rebels. And why it's on topic being in here.

Maybe he's from Alderaan

Maybe you are just used to more overcomplicated mega-multilayered ensemble-series like "that fictional massmurderers audience apathy inducing dysfunctional family saga " Game of Thrones or " Disillusioned Nietzsche Wannabe Marines in Space Odyssey" BSG.

;)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

YES!

EXACTLY! That's what's so **** great about this show! It does EXACTLY what it intended to do- and that's, "Look like a Ralph McQuarrie painting at all times".

It's a great tribute to an amazing artist.

Kallus has the saddest personal quarter's imaginable

Just needs some miserable rendition of mad world or something

You have to wonder; is that a commentary solely on how empty the Empire is for Kallus, or is there a bit of Kallus's personal life in there as well?

(Though to be fair, for ship-board quarters on a vessel of over 1200 people these are nice . He doesn't have to share with the other officers, has his own sink and bathroom. Add a potted plant, a chair, and a coffee table and they'd be approaching luxuriant.)

He contents of that trunk at the end of the bed? Party cannon. Pinky Pie style. (Waiting for the obligatory upgrade card pic)

Pffft.

Agent Kallus having to suffer Pinkie Pie's antics. Yeah, I'd pay to watch that. He'd be absolutely infuriated.

Except, I don't think McQuarrie's art actually looks better than the movies. So yeah, they're doing what they intended to do, but what they intended to do isn't really all that impressive.

Yeah, it's interesting. But that doesn't make it good.

It's not better or worse. It's just different. Personally, I find it to be on par.

EDIT: Surely we can agree it's better than that weird glossy neon color scheme of Dark Empire.

The problem I had with the first season was that we were looking at the same one goddamn painting over and over, every week. Glad they got some monies to show us more diverse and interesting places

I mean, sure. But that was a comic book. So it's not really comparable.

Yes, and that is the problem.

It's made for kids.

But everything that happens in this kids show becomes canon.

Even the stupid stuff that could only happen in a kids show.

Not that I don't like those shows, but I also like The Tick, Batman the animated series and other kids shows.

But this show simply doesn't engage me.

It's simplistic and uninventive, in my honest opinion, and simply doesn't bridge the gap into the adult writing that some other supposed kids shows do.

No, I feel that this show is almost entirely predictive and overtly dumbed down for the kids.

Sorry, but that's how I feel, and I know I'm not alone in that (however, most of the people who feel that way won't be in this thread in the first place).

And it really sucks. Because kids are not as stupid as the show writers seem to assume. They can handle stories with loads more depth and complexity.

But I'm starting to think that the people in charge of this show simply aren't capable of doing that.

(looks at the midseason finale)

Sure.

Also, the Hera/Kanan relationship is an amazing show of their writing skills.

I find a lot of the old cannon far sillier then rebels has been.

I enjoy rebels for the most part (something about the space whales didn't sit right with me though).

Gravity Falls? just curious....
