Most armor doesn't allow you to take a hit and keep on fighting. It usually just allows you to take a hit and go home alive.
Pretty much, yeah. That's what Shield Generators are for.

I'd imagine that Stormtrooper armor isn't that much different than today's kevlar armor. It will save your life, but you're not going to be combat ready after getting shot.
Typically, history has always had armor lagging behind weapons, because it's a lot easier to produce a more powerful weapon then it is to stop it.

There are exceptions to the rule however. There is a video where an insurgent in Iraq sniped an American soldier. The soldier went down but, thanks to his body armor, got right back up and took cover behind his vehicle. The sniper, wounded and captured, was lucky that the American he shot was unhurt. He was the unit medic and the one who treated his wounds in the field.

He selflessly treated the person that shot him beforehand? Was he secretly a Jedi?
If you go by the Verizon commercial with BB-8 and Chewbacca, one of the stormtroopers takes a bolt from Chewie's crossbow, gets knocked down and then seemimgly gets up and fires back.

That's the theory behind modern ballistic armor: the weapons being faced are just too powerful for a full plate suit to be made that would stop bullets and be light enough for practical use.
The thing is medieval full plate did allow you to take a hit and keep on fighting; many hits in fact. That's why they did away with shields at the same time that plate became prevalent: there was no need for a shield. Having fought in plate many times before, I can tell you that it's amazing: you can be hit with a blow that lifts you off your feet about an inch, and barely even feel it.
That's why when I see a full plate suit, I assume that it provides similar protection from the weapons it would be facing. If not, why not just take a heavy vest, or a shield?
Not worrying too much about it, just food for thought is all.

It's good that you leave room for error though.
Coup-counter coup injuries on the brain occur no matter how hard the helmet. You need some good padding, and even then your brain still sloshes up against the skull sometimes.
The problem is that "concussion" is divided into two ends of the energy spectrum. A regular football-type concussion from a car crash or being hit on the head by Chewie is momentum: your brain starts moving then stops moving abruptly (coup: contrecoup). To alleviate this, you wear soft padding, like a motorbike helmet has. Blasts on the other hand, deliver energy as a P-wave (pressure wave) which travels through your brain and treats it as a liquid. Dealing with that requires hard padding to seal off wave entry and dissipate the wave. A lot of Iraqi vets had brain injuries from IEDs this way.

If it's a glancing blow then the armour should be effective.
@ BKL: maybe you should spend less time with questionably edited and 'researched' coffee table reference books and, you know, watch the movies?
Ewoks didn't use Dennis the menace slingshots, they used slings which can fire stones or clay and metal bullets at lethal speeds. Remember little David vs a certain philistine? Companies of slingers were a real thing on anciant battlefields and the Ewok warriors who were actually proficient in slings appeared to be very accurate and effective in incapacitating Stormtroopers, if not wounding or killing them. Wicket W. Warlock not as much.
It was approved by Chee when before it was published, thats good enough for me. Still we don't see that exact blaster beyond the range that I listed for it being able to penetrate the mark V or VI storm troop armour, penetrating that armour on screen.
I have to watch these movies over and over for vs debates, I have never seen a sling penetrate storm trooper armour. I don't even think Ewoks on screen use Slings, or I should say have scenes were they are seen using slings.

And the Stormtroopers ran for cover when the Ewoks were dropping hand-held rocks on them. Stormtroopers didn't seem to be able to shoot anything and the armor didn't appear to be even useful. Seemed odd to me when I watched the movie.
Heavy rocks can do alot of damage. The human skull can only take 74 psi before it breaks. That being said its really their necks they have to worry about when getting hit. We see a Storm Trooper get hit by a rock from super high, it was from a Ewok Glider, and it didn't scratch the armour. It did knock over the Storm Trooper. The only fictonal soliders that would get hit by said rock and not be knocked down from the force of impact would be Dark Troopers, some Space Troopers, Hazard Troopers, and probably Space Marines and Spartan twos & fours.
If it makes a diffrence, there technically two commando team on endor, exculding the main characters, it looks like maybe 1-3 out of all of them survived. They were trained by the guy that created and trained Storm Commandos, at the least the human ones were I have no idea who trained the alien commandos that went to endor.

Can we have a soul-searching discussion on why it can't take a hint? There's a still a few hours to the episode.
