STAR WARS: REBELS Discussion Thread!

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

Okay who noticed the ships which I couldn't identify opposite the TIEs in the hangar when the Inquisitors shuttle arrived? It's at the 28 min mark.

That's them:

As they keep showing those Patrol Transports, we'll probably see em in the game.

They show up the first time as Troop Transports in the last three episodes of Season One...

Those are atmospheric only.

So, anything good story wise happen in Rebels? Ahsoka get any good scenes yet? Good dogfighting?

Clearly they can't be atmospheric only, but those are republic police ships redone in military grey and used as space hueys.

I have a question about this episode:

What was with Kanan and Esra being able to deflect the TIE Fighter's lasers with their Lightsabers?

as for the AT-TE VS. AT-AT or whatever the hell those were , wow.

Those look like they were based on one of Joe Johnston's original AT-AT designs (as seen in the old Empire Strikes Back Sketchbook):

I'm loving how both this and The Force Awakens are mining all the conceptual material to give things a familiar yet different feel.

There is precedence for this with Luke deflecting the speeder bolts on Endor - likely they are similar

I noticed that as well. In fact, it looked like they were waving their sabers but not actually deflecting anything. Like kids playing make believe, I had to rewind it and watch again. I kept telling myself, "Surely they are deflecting something, not just waving a lightsaber around LOL."

Soooo.... Is Kallus trapped on a planet where the rebels have more resources? It seems like they missed a real opportunity there.

At the end of this last episode, the meeting of Ahsoka and Rex was very well done the way they did it.

If you watch this while playing the benny hill theme music it actually is even funnier.

For an Imperial-themed game/movie/show, I would suggest drawing from the WW2 army/navy media for inspiration.

The Empire is much more rank-and-file than the Rebellion, so it would make sense to base the character interaction more on actual ranked militaries and war-time scenarios.

Picture M.A.S.H. for an Imperial army base, McHale's Navy for a Corvette crew (a little more comedy than grunge for that example), or Foyle's War with an ISB agent trying to solve domestic issues with the war as a backdrop.

Also, Das Boot.

This...makes me annoyed. TIES dropped from racks. The ships on the right are channeling their inner Star Trek Design Similarity. Meh. Do all Imperial craft need solar panels? That's also my only beef with the Raider model.

Curmudgeon much? I hope not. Just sayin'.

Fair.

Lothal TIE's are specially designed so they can land on their wings. They are a local variant.

Stormtroopers being standard infantry. I'm never going to like that, but we must adapt.

Empire not sexist. hoooooboy I had a 4 hour argument about this with a good and dear friend of mine. Both of us had fair points. His argument was that since the empire clearly didn't have many femtroopers in the OT, and were based off of the nazi's that it was inappropriate for fem stormtroopers to exist. I countered with EU and Disney sources, he countered that with that the OT was a product of it's time etc etc.

No real winner. Personally I like it. My daughter is going dressed as a stormtrooper for halloween.

I don't belive there is such a thing as a Lothal TIE - i assume you are referencing the "stubby" wings, which is more of a artistic style. After all, the Gozanti currently on the boat comes with two TIEs, albeit different paintjobs, but not a different type.

Mainly note that the same model is used during Kanan's rescue, at the end of season one, aboard Tarkin's Star Destroyer (and fleet). Wishful thinking on your part I think, unless the TIEs at this time, a few years before the Battle of Yavin, go through a re-design to get larger wings.

Also, for your friend, show them this picture.

I'm not one to quote wookieepedia willy nilly, but it has listed sources.

Yeah I pointed out that Captain Phasma was played by the great, great Gwendoline Christie. But he was purely going by OT... I then compared SW to religion by pointing out that's like taking certain religious texts but ignoring others, and he got VERY pissy at me.

I like this perspective on the Empire's attitude toward diversity

http://eleven-thirtyeight.com/2015/09/gray-matters-i-lost-stars-and-the-seductive-evil-of-the-galactic-empire/

The gender-neutral, racially-diverse, and sexually tolerant Galactic Empire of the new Star Wars canon has struck some fans as odd, because a villainous government should not have made strides that are sometimes difficult to see in real life. Further, some folks also allege that the Empire should in fact represent the worst societal policies and characteristic to give the heroes something to fight against. We’ve already discussed why simply reproducing real-life sexism without engaging it or inserting present ideological disagreements into Star Wars hurts the narrative, but today we want to talk about the notion that a Galactic Empire that doesn’t discriminate on the basis of human sex, sexual orientation, or race is somehow no longer evil.

An Empire that simply checks off all the boxes of “bad” isn’t scary, it’s cartoonish and implausible. Discrimination is an invidious and awful, and governments which purposefully enshrine intolerance in law are usually bad governments (especially when they exploit societal differences to their own ends). As a storytelling device, it’s only effective when the story really showcases why discrimination is bad and how to combat it. Otherwise, it is just hanging there and alienates the part of the audience that is not represented (“stormtroopers can’t be black!” or “women can’t be Imperial admirals!”). Does the absence of that kind of discrimination hurt the all-pervading evil that the Empire is supposed to represent? We don’t think so – if anything, it enhances it by showing that the Empire’s evil is so seductive that it draws all sorts of people to it.

Here’s the thing. Just because the Galactic Empire doesn’t discriminate on the basis of (human) race or gender doesn’t mean it isn’t evil. Just because the Galactic Empire isn’t homophobic doesn’t mean that isn’t villainous. Merely reaching the basic standards of civil conduct should be a minimum for any just government, not the end of the examination. The Galactic Empire does a lot of things – it destroys planets, it enslaves populations, and it crushes all dissent. Not everyone in the Empire is evil and some good people can serve the Emperor for good reasons, but the Empire is not good simply because it doesn’t irrationally discriminate. Watch Rebels , read the comics or the books – you’ll see plenty of Imperial evil. There’s no need to inject real life discrimination that alienates fans of diverse backgrounds to accomplish that goal.

Basically, the idea that the Empire has to be sexist "because it's evil" is the equivalent of them kicking puppies because it's evil. Unless that discrimination is well-explored in stories like the Empire's non-human discrimination, it comes across as evil window dressing.

Anyway, hope you and your daughter have a great Halloween shooting Rebel scum. :)

As to wookipedia, much of it is circumspect, due to its nature of anyone being able to write for it.

I need to read that article in full, that's a good one - thanks!

That isn't the normal storage position for the ties on the deck. It is a parade formation for a visiting high muckity muck. Much like when they display aircraft on carriers for parades
