A new take on Imperial Epics why there wont be a ISD shaped ship

By Lilikin, in X-Wing

I personally would be quite disappointed if it was the Gozanti. IMHO to get epic play going they need to release something for the defends of empire which is like the CR90. Lets face it, we want to be yelling pew pew while shooting at other capital ships. Don't get me wrong I am sure the Gozanti would bring interesting play mechanics but I can't help but feel that a corvette style ship should be first call.

I think it needs to be bigger and badder (and more expensive) than the CR90 but not a lot.

I think the Gozanti someone was telling me is the same length as the rebel transport so that may be the imperial equivalent.

I would LOVE the gozanti and that Assault carrier thing it looks AWESOME

Well sure, but it's also extremely well known. You could probably ask most Star Wars fans who've picked up one of the many books what a Lancer Frigate was and they might just get it right. You ask them about an Escort Carrier or a VIC2F and the chances of them getting it right are pretty low, considering there's another type of Escort Carrier which is just a flying hangar, and the Victory II Star Destroyer also exists.

So what we can always depend on is something well known being given to us. Look at the most successful games, books, and so on, for what we might get. The Moldy Crow was less obscure than you'd think, considering it came from the hit series Dark Forces and its sequels. And even then it's easily the most obscure ship in the entire game, bar none. Even post Wave 6.

I kinda disagree with you there, the Moldy Crow's not the most obscure, the Tie Phantom is. From one game which very few people played, a sequel to another game that's nowhere near as well-known as Rogue Swuadron or Battlefront. I never even knew there was a Rebel Assault 2 until I looked up the Tie Phantom after seeing it revealed.

And given how popular the other games int he Star Wars franchise like Battlefront and Rogue Squadron are, I can almost definitely assume more people have heard of those ships, and they really do look nicer.

Anyway, the Carrack's probably just as likely as the Lancer, for the exact same reasons, I just hope we get something visually appealing too, the Falcon's meant to look like a hunk of junk but we all know how well that translated.

But anyway, I'm fine with the Gozanti, it'll probably be the transport equivalent.

Also, can we get a Tie Hunter now, or am I too much of a Rogue Squadron fanboy?

My Bet is on the carrack more so the lancer, and that imps will get a lancer when Rebs get a DP (snicker) 20 Corellian Gunship.

Why? Sheer gorramn firepower that'sw hy.

I'll disagree with you once more- the TIE Phantom was also in Star Wars: Empire at War. As was The Crow, but only briefly and as a HORRIBLE model. Yuck! But the TIE Phantom and its capabilities are extremely well known to FoC players. Which there were quite a few of.

I suppose the discussion is based around will the ship be iconic, or good!

Personally I don't like dong shaped ships even if they are more well known in the universe.

the Gozanti would be silly not to be included because of rebels and ticks both boxes now.

The assault carrier thing would look awesome and a (very limited) spawn mechanic would be something epic to bring into the game but isn't as iconic.

I think thus far FFG have been more realists than Iconicists (did you see that Palinisation? :P) so I hope it will be those two

FFG please don't turn our game into a sausagefest (more than it already is :)(not that they are actually reading this or that this would change their mind))

Speaking of, isn't there still design space for a dubious D-Wing ;)?

The other day I had the hideous realization that a Jonus flying next to a Huge Imperial Gunship would be pure freaking murder. You'd be able to fire a Quad, use Jonus to reroll, and if you _still_ missed, you could spend an energy to perform the attack _again_. Repeat for every Quad you can fit on the darned ship.

That would probably be FAQed out of existence, though.

How can we make this game more inclusive to ge....... is this old now?

I want to see someone run a phantom swarm.

That's what I want.

Actually played against this in a 2 vs. 2 epic game. They did not perform so well. :(

The phantoms have a much harder time in epic games due to the difficulty of getting out of firing arcs of so many ships. Essentially they have no where to hide...

Just bet on a Lancer and Gozanti.

Powers that be FFG, please spare us from the awful design that is the Lancer. Ditto any other poorly designed ship that looks like MechaGodzilla's dong. Render unto us instead cool dagger-shaped things with guns on them. Amen.

Well, wouldn't say anything long, Star Destroyers are long, so are Corvettes, and Escort Carriers, and everything argued for is long. It's just that Lancers are ugly, and not in a "what a hunk of junk" kind of way like the Falcon.

You don't read of people refusing to use the GR-75 Transport just because it looks like whale,

and the CR90 looks as much like a phallus as any other ship that's been criticized.

I don't think you have had the opportunity to try out an

Imperial huge ship if you can knock a ship soley based on it's looks.

Why don't you play it before you judge it: http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/108071-cr90-imperial-version-or-proxy-miniature/?p=1317379

Okay. I am starting to feel like FFG would have put out some word on Imperial huges at this point if it weren't for all the space dong stuff.

I laughed as much as the next guy, but enough is enough. If you really want a space dong, you need to look no further than an X-Wing's front end anyways. There hasn't been much outcry over them.

Lancer frigate, however they looked, were supposed to be very killy when it came to starfighters, I thought. Throw it and the Gozanti in, and let's call it good. It seems kinda crap that Rebels have had huges for so long with no answer to them. It's probably why more people don't buy and play them. Because it seems uneven. Yeah, I get it, point values are one thing, but wouldn't it be so much cooler to have an Imp ship as a counter to the Reb one?

Let's just get these things in and done.

Calling this ship or that ship "ugly" to try to take it off the list is a cop out.

Hey now, I never said I wouldn't use it, you're putting words in my mouth. I'm just explaining why I'd prefer a different ship, but FFG know what they're doing with this game, and the Lancer or the Carrack or whatnot would surely be fun to use. And a Lancer could well have Soontir Fel as crew, seeing as how he served ont he command staff of one for a while.

Also, the CR90 and GR-75 are in no way ugly. Or dong-shaped, well, maybe the GR-75, but the CR90 would make one very strange phallus.

It's not just that it's a dong, it's a poorly drawn dong.

This is dong, too, but it's well drawn:

And oh hey, something more recent:

So that style of ship design can be done well. Whereas when you look at the disasters that are the Lancer and Carrack designs, it's plain someone just didn't give a **** and let a 6-year old draw something on a napkin:carrack_cruiser.gif wah wah wah waaaaaaaah

You need to keep a certain brand standard, is all. Imperial equipment has an iconic look and feel that you have to maintain so that it's obvious to someone who's never played the old games (there are lots of those people, and those are the people they want, make no mistake) that an Imperial ship is an Imperial ship. This is their chance to do some damage control and fix the mistakes those past art depts. made by letting crap like the Lancer leave the drawing board in the first place. Especially when you have canonical stuff like this to draw on:

I think I'd kill a kitten for an Acclamator-II class Star Frigate, or something that looks like a mini Acclamator.

No kittens, but I have this ewok and the keys to an AT-ST....

See, this is what I'm talking about. You can either work on something and make it great, or you can half-ass it and have War of the Corncobs. I mean look at those things. It's copy/paste hell in there. To boot, someone got PAID for that.

Wow, the obsessed people here.

For me the Lancer, at least the bow of it, is more reminiscent if a WWI/WWII-era submarine, which I think is rather neat.
