Edited by Radarman5I'm undecided, but like the idea of IA more than Armada atm... because I can use the miniatures and tile with the FFG star wars RPGs.
Both look great, but at $100 for a starter, and then needing to buy a bunch of expansions, I don't really see myself getting either, especially with Scum & Villainy and wave 5 on the way.
If IA had a 2 player co-op, or solo game mode (like Gears Of War has) then I'd buy it to play when I can get a game with friends. As is, if I'm playing a two player game it's X-Wing, and if there's 3 or more players I'll probably be playing the rpg.
Quick x-wing community poll regarding Imperial Assault and Armada:
Definitely IA, which I can also make use of in the RPG group I'm in.
I'm pretty sure Armada would just scratch the same itch that X-Wing does, so I'll stick with playing X-Wing and skip Armada. Plus I play in Star Trek Attack Wing events twice a month and I'll also likely start buying more Golem Arcana than the starter set that I currently have...
Hm. Did you sell them on ebay in the last week or two? With photos take on a big woods table or maybe a 4x8 piece of ply? IG was one, maybe Nids another? If so, I saw them:)
Yes, but it wasn't nids. IG, Minotaurs, Tau, Chaos Marines, Necrons. All much loved, all much played, and all much missed. I am happy to be free of GW though.
Ha! I saw those:). Small world.
Armada I'm gonna have to try before I buy. I may eventually get just enough to field a single build, but I really don't like the fact that squadrons are in that game. When I saw Howlrunner for example, my hopes for that game died. I don't want to own 2 Howlrunner TIE Fighters..... I just want Capital Ships. The Squadrons seem silly, especially since we already have a well established game featuring small fighters.
I think ignoring squadrons in a starfighter game would be ridiculous, unless starfighters are completely incapable of doing damage to them. The part that bothers me a bit is the named squadrons. It's a little crazy to think that an Admiral overseeing capital starships would have any realization of what pilots are in the fighters. I do agree though, how the fighter combat pans out will definitely make or break this game for me.
I agree you don't have to ignore squadrons, HOWEVER I think there could have been a vastly superior way to handle them. One way could have been to include the X-Wing miniatures we already have. IE a TIE fighter represents the whole squadron. It is roughly the same size of base, and the actual X-Wing minis actually come painted. Sure the scale would be off, but the scale is already off.
But a better way would have been to represent squadrons of fighters by some mechanic other than miniatures. Fighters would be roughly the size of a grain of sand when next to a star destroyer, so why not just pretend they are invisible, and use something like cards or actions to represent deploying fighters and damage done from fighter squadrons.
IE Maybe a Star Destroyer comes with a Squadron Effects deck. It takes one action to launch fighters, and takes another action to draw a card from the squadron deck and play it - the card might say your fighters do minor damage, do major damage, one crashes.... or whatever.
Interested in both. I like descent, I like X-wing. I hope to see a demo of imperial assault soon, since it will apparently hit stores in november or december. So time enough to save some extra money for armada
Small world.
You're not going to summon a group of demonic multi-racial doll puppets to start singing, are you?
