Quick x-wing community poll regarding Imperial Assault and Armada:

By Bakura83, in X-Wing

I have no interest in either.

As a few people have been using the term and i like it i will use it here - FFG are cannibalizing their own customer base in attempts to get other game lines out there. There is no way their entire customer base will buy ALL star wars related products and so it dilutes the spending of any one potential customer as they split their money between game lines or focus on one.

I understand that FFG have the star wars license and only for a fixed amount of time so are wanting to rush out as many games as possible as the hype around Ep7 builds, but seriously...

I hear you, but I don't think they are trying to cannibalize their customer base - I think they want multiple Star Wars product lines out in good time for the massive wave of new potential players EP 7's release will bring.

Now any new Star Wars fan who comes across FFG has a card game, an RPG, a boardgame with a bonus skirmish game included, and two miniature space combat games.

I think Armada is definitely targeted at the X-wing crowd, but the others I think are just trying to widen the appeal to as many Star Wars fans as possible.

Making 2 games for the exact same crowd is what is meant by cannibalizing their own customer base.

That is the exact reason why I decided not to invest in Armada. I already have X-Wing that fill the same niche as a game, so why buy into a second one that will only dilute the time I have to play the first one. I already invested a lot in X-Wing (800$+) and will continue to do so in the future, so I won't start buying into another miniature game if it means I won't play X-Wing as much, especially if the second game also use the same theme. So, with the 150-200$(plus future wave investment) I was suppose to use to buy Armada, I will buy other boardgames (3-4) that play with more people (so it won't thread on my X-Wing playtime that is already too few for my taste) and deliver completely different experiences. Imperial Assault do just that, so I'll buy into it.

I'm 100% going to get Imperial Assault. I was a playtester so I feel like I have to. Also, it was a fun game.

I may get Armada, but not anytime soon. I just don't think it is going to have the popular scene that X-Wing has. If they fixed some of the concerns I had from looking at it at GenCon then that will help. I'll prolly end up getting the base game to play around with, but it won't go very deep for me.

Imperial Assault - yes.

Armada - no.

Married with kids. I just don't have the time.. Maybe if my son were older I could get him into it, but I'd rather just get him into X-wing.

Descent is fun. I've played it. I'm sure they will both be good games as FFG tends to make good games.

Am I interested in both? Yes.

Can I afford to get into both? No.

I will absolutely be getting both as soon as they come out. Both are star wars related and by FFG, who largely makes high quality games, which pretty much makes them auto-buys for me. However, both games fall into new miniatures sub-genres that really fill in some gaps in my gaming repertoire right now.

Armada, obviously more in line with X-Wing, brings massive capital ship battles to the table top. The game feels like it's going to focus more on broader strategy and a big-picture strategy that'll have you willing to sacrifice ships to accomplish your objectives unlike X-Wing where you pretty much always want your ships to live forever. Instead of being the ace pilot you're the admiral.

Imperial assault, as I understand it, is almost a bridge between a role-playing game and a miniatures game. It makes things even more personal than X-Wing, having people play as a single rebel hero and one player essentially be a DM as the imperials. The fact that there's a campaign way to play the game ramps up the story-telling aspect of things.

Anyways those are my reasons for wanting each.

I don't have enough time to play either of those games on top of X-Wing. I get one night a week to game and X-Wing eats that up.

Considering Armada. I already play this, Heroclix, and STAW so time/budget might be deciding factor. Imperial Assault just doesn't do it for me, no interest there.

Considering Armada. Will depend on a mix of the quality of the rules & models.

No interest in the other.

Imperial Assault will definitely be my second game.

I originally wanted to get into Armada, but I am have really taken an interest into Dungeon Crawler games lately. I started a Descent Campaign with a buddy and really enjoy that game, and I've noticed the few differences that Imperial Assault has made to the core gameplay (Few but interesting changes). Also I play several other miniatures games and am really excited about the ability to cross over minis from one game to another.

Armada I'm gonna have to try before I buy. I may eventually get just enough to field a single build, but I really don't like the fact that squadrons are in that game. When I saw Howlrunner for example, my hopes for that game died. I don't want to own 2 Howlrunner TIE Fighters..... I just want Capital Ships. The Squadrons seem silly, especially since we already have a well established game featuring small fighters.

I have no interest in either.

Imperial Assault doesn't look in any way exciting for me. Armada does look very exciting but I'm already invested in X-Wing and don't have the time or money for another game. If Armada and X-Wing had come out at the same time then it might've been a different scenario

I think ignoring squadrons in a starfighter game would be ridiculous, unless starfighters are completely incapable of doing damage to them. The part that bothers me a bit is the named squadrons. It's a little crazy to think that an Admiral overseeing capital starships would have any realization of what pilots are in the fighters. I do agree though, how the fighter combat pans out will definitely make or break this game for me.

I already play Pathfinder, so Imperial Assault won't fill a hunger as much.

I wasn't even considering getting Imperial Assault.

I will very likely be getting Armada.

Imperial Assault for sure. Armada maybe.

Im really really really looking forward to the skirmish version of the game (if anyone knows Dust, they know what stage 2 of the game is going to be)

Probably Armada, though I'll be waiting to see how the player base firms up. The cost is probably the biggest issue for me, but I do like capital ships...

Imperial Assault will definitely be my second game. I don't have much interest in capital ships and I can get a lot more play for my $100 from IA than Armada.

I'm planning on picking up a core set for each, I can definitely see myself continuing with Armada and assault is a maybe

Armada is a yes for me.

As for Assault, will pick up a copy at some time.

Neither for me.

I know I may be the rare bird here but only X-Wing for me. Both the other games are wonderful looking and I will play them but not collect them.

You're not the only one! I am somewhat interested in Armada, but the lack of scale is a downer. I purchase X-wing as a collector / completionist so I have no interest in also purchasing and maintaining up to date Armada fleets. I may change my mind eventually, if they stop making new X-wing expansions, but I find it unlikely that they would stop either before their license expires.

Armada'll be my second game.

I'll pick up the starter, though I'm slightly worried about finding people to play with since my local group doesn't look like they'll go for it. One is really excited for Imperial Assault, and I guess if it were on it's own I might go for it, ground stuff isn't as interesting for me either. There's already too much X-wing stuff to keep up with, tbh.

I'm hoping there'll be something ridiculous and fun whenever they make an Interdictor.

Only one person needs to go for IA because it's a complete board game with expansions rather than a pseudo-collectible miniatures game.

Armada - Yes! Honestly, I'm more interested in Armada than X-Wing. It's more strategic, and feels more like space based combat. I like the use of the larger ships, and I think this will be of more interest to me and my friends than X-Wing.

IA - YES YES YES. I'm more of a board gamer than mini gamer. IA kind of blends board games, mini games, and RPGs to a degree in a way that will be a hit with my friends, and my family. I can't wait to play this. This will definately see more table time than either of the other two.

X-wing - Still a fan. Still collecting, still playing, but will likely be 3rd in line for interest. A great game, and certainly scratches that dog-fighting, quick combat itch that Armada won't, so it still has it's place in my collection.

Sad part is I'm going to cut lose a few X-Wing mini's, and reduce my spending here a bit. And I won't be buying as much Armada as I had originally planned. Why? Because before I only had to worry about X-Wing. Now I need to follow X-Wing, Armada, and IA. All of them with ongoing releases. I don't have any extra money, so the collections will be a little smaller all around.

Imperial Assault is not on my list, it doesn't appeal.

Armada - yes, for sure but perhaps a little more conservatively than with x-wing.

Imperial Assault will definitely be my second game.

Looking at the source material how could they make this game without Starfighter squadrons? Every depiction on screen or in print has squadron actions as intergral to both the battle and the overall battle doctrine and ship design deployed by each side. You can not have a Star Wars game depecting fleet actions without fighters. It would not be Star Wars.
