Rib, is that you?!
FFG, please sell random boxes
Don't listen FFG!!!
He obviously is an infiltrating saboteur sent by Wizzkids to undermine the resounding succes that is X-wing!!!
Take him outside and shoot him behind the shed troopers!
I'm anything but a saboteur. wizkids? Please their miniatures suck. I'm 100% behind FFG. Sorry I brought up randomization. I just need a reason to buy more xwing and I must say this year FFG is doing much better. I would really like a release each month. I love watching my horde grow.
No.
Ok, I'll revise that to a "maybe" IF the price for each "pack" doesn't increase but each one includes say 5 to 7 different miniatures and along with the full assortment of cards to support them. What? That really won't work because there's no way you could pack that many FFG minis in the same box at that price without making serious compromises? Well if that's the case then I guess I'm back to NO.
haha 19 likes off that one post, made my day people thanks.
Have you checked your numbers lately?? WOW
At the risk of gettin my leg bit in this fight, I think if some right a booster system could work, but it would have to differ greatly than the norm.
1) make the pack 30ish percent cheaper, so In the US mark them at $10ish,
2) make the cards that come in the pack go with the ship, as to avoid getting a cool looking A-wing with Tie related ship cards and tokens (this is a no brainer but weirder things have happened in games before :/ )
3) don't ever give out pilots that are better or worse than the ones in the regular ship expansions.
4) make sure the painting of the ships is different enough to catch the eye but not so different as make them seem out of place when next to the original ships, so no flames or 60's-esque schemes.
By far the most important of these 4 areas is price, as I wouldn't care too much if I got a fighter I didn't like that well. Of course I can't think of a ship I don't like.... Maybe the HWK, but it's not horrible.
I want you to go outside and think how you've gone wrong with your life, when you have that revaluation your allowed back inside.
hahah ive never seen that 'popular' star before... 100+ likes i assume!
Well done chum! ![]()
While this game is better off not being randomized, I've wondered what it would be like if the cards were sold in randomized boosters (and you'd pick up a separately packaged model to use with your cards).
And by wondered, I mean that I have an extensive Notepad document on my home laptop separating each wave's cards into rarities. o.o"
So I don't think you're crazy to dream, OP, but I do think you're crazy to ask.
So after thier debacle that was WizKids at Gencon I'd advise FFG to just do the opposite of whatever WizKids does. So no blind packs.
I've wondered what it would be like if the cards were sold in randomized boosters...
That wouldn't work, not cards in boosters and models in a different package. I would not play this game if I had to chase after rare cards.
But one thing that is a possibility... Maybe not a great one but could in theory hit a few birds with the same stone.
What if they released packs of random pilot and upgrade cards from the same wave, with varying degrees of rarity, for say $10 for a 10 pilot, 10 upgrade pack. So you'd buy wave 1 pilots and upgrades, wave 2, wave 3, ect... FFG could make some money off it, you could have a market for buying single cards, and yet there would be absolutely no need to buy into it, if you were willing to pay the price for the current expansions.
They could be 1 or even 2 waves behind, so there's still plenty of reason to buy stuff as they come out.
Edited by VanorDMWhile I also dislike the idea of randomized boosters, especially in x-wing, and fully, 100% agree that FFG should never go in that direction. I do have one single advantage to such a thing when it comes to miniatures.
The nature of randomized sets and sales allows the manufacturer to create figs for less popular/identifiable miniatures that some people might enjoy having but that would never get made otherwise. Back when WotC was doing randomized D&D figs I was able to pick up a whole slew of really cool models of lesser critters for use in RPGs. Wolves, hyenas, crested felldrakes, twig blights, and when the first did the huge figs, a slew of treemen figs, and so on. Stuff that would never have been made otherwise.
Likewise, when they were doing the Star Wars sets, it was easy to get the bulk storm troopers and so on needed for role playing.
Not sufficient justification to warrant the sales model, but when someone says there is NOTHING good from a randomized model, they are wrong.
Again, buying boosters in Magic is for children and noobs. That's why they sell them at Target and Wal-Mart on children-sized shelves next to YuGiOh, Pokemon, My Little Pony and whatever other crap they're trying to hock. Go into a good MtG card shop and you'll find cases and cases of singles so people can buy exactly what they want.
FFG has this nailed for X-wing, go to your lgs and buy exactly what you want. Then, rinse and repeat and buy more stuff. Each time receiving what you expected.
FFG, don't ever change!
The xwing starter set is at Target next to all of those! Lol
Really? i have not seen a starter set at my local Targets in over a year and a half.
Worst idea EVER! Hey FFG why don't you take your most successful game EVER and ruin it!!! Go play hero clicks kid!
Worst idea EVER! Hey FFG why don't you take your most successful game EVER and ruin it!!! Go play hero clicks kid!
Worst manners ever. At least try to disagree with some humor.
First, FFG will not do this. None of their products work that way, hence the LCG.
Also, if they did, I would stop playing immediately. No questions, no exceptions. I'd take my collection to eBay and be done with the game if it had random boosters.
So after thier debacle that was WizKids at Gencon I'd advise FFG to just do the opposite of whatever WizKids does. So no blind packs.
What happened at GenCon?
What happened at GenCon?
A lot of bad stuff for WizKids. They have a lot of products that you can only get at con's, and most times it's pretty powerful stuff.
But apparently they couldn't even manage to have people form a line, and even went as far as blaming GenCon for that, despite the fact that FFG had no issues. It got so bad apparently one person actually got hurt...
Then on top of of all the people working their booths were quite rude and unhelpful to the customers.
If you want to know more, the Boardgame geeks page for STAW should have more details.

The WizKids booth was seriously mismanaged.
- They only had about 50-125 of the "GenCon Exclusives" for sale each day for a crowd of about 45,000 convention-goers (and were sold out on Thursday before the doors were opened to the public).
- Representatives lied about available stock, saying they "had plenty" when they were already sold out or very close to selling out.
- Representatives were rude to people asking about stock or wondering where the line was.
- Representatives lied about GenCon "not allowing them to form a line" in the Exhibitor's hall, even though Paizo and FFG (among several others) had orderly lines set up.
To a lesser degree of annoyance, they did not sell anything at their booth other than the 'Con exclusives, so each day it was pretty much a ghost town after noonish unless you wanted a demo of D&D Attack Wing or HeroClix.

That sounds like something an infiltrating saboteur would say!!!
Where is the Inquisition?!
Yeah, the worst part of Magic is the fact that buying singles costs so darn much. It's super exciting and fun opening booster packs, but eventually you realize that the best way to save money is to just buy the cards for the deck you need (at super inflated prices) and never open boosters.
I've wondered what it would be like if the cards were sold in randomized boosters...

I'm not sure how your suggestion is much different than mine =P In both our suggestions, randomized cards with rarities are sold in packs corresponding to waves. I just added the bit about selling the models (with bases and cardboard and whatnot) separately because it's impractical to include them in a box with the cards, like HeroClix does. It would be too expensive to sell a 10-card booster pack that has, say, five pilot cards in it, since it also would need five models (or possibly fewer, if multiple pilots belonged to the same ship). And it probably would be hard for the manufacturer to determine which models to put in a pack to go with the cards. It wouldn't be cost- or time-effective.
So the easiest way would be to sell booster packs of random cards (say, 10 cards in a pack with a mixture of pilots and upgrades), then sell the models separately. The models wouldn't be blind-buy and they wouldn't come with any cards. Players could buy the models they need to go with the cards they pulled in their booster packs.
There are less than 20 expansions for each side.
You just roll roll 1d6.
If it's 1-3 --- Rebels
If it's 4-6 --- Empire
Then just use a 1d12 or 1d20, using this product order

And there you go, a random system withouth bothering the crap out of the other people.
By the way, lottery is no fun, you have more chances of dying in the way to pick up your prize than actually winning the lottery.
You all must be seriously bitter about dumping lots of cash in other games that feature randomization.
Random upgrade card packs with upgrades at different rarities.... Oh like that should go over big. I can just see it now:
VERY RARE: I guess this is where all of the Unique cards should go.
Rare: Gunner, Stealth Device, Push the Limits, Advanced Sensors, HLC (you know, the stuff that people often like to use in their squads but may not be easy to get.)
Uncommon: I guess this would be the place to put some of those less popular upgrades that don't fall into the last section.
Common: I think this is where you put all that ordnance which you've already got tons of just sitting around doing nothing. Here you'll find Proton Torpedoes, Concussion Missiles, and probably a few other things.
I'm sure it's just me but anytime you start seeing "random" packaging for a "build what you use to destroy your opponent" type game the stuff you want to use in your builds is always on the rarer end of the spectrum leaving you with lots of chaff or requiring you to venture into the secondary market to get the stuff you really need.
You all must be seriously bitter about dumping lots of cash in other games that feature randomization.
Some of the miniatures games not so much but that's because I'd only buy a full case (so I knew 90% of what I was getting) or I'd just buy off the secondary market to start out with. Besides, my WotC mini purchase also fed the RPG.
For MtG, you'd better believe it. Even buying by the box wasn't always that helpful at getting certain cards but it sure left a person with a lot of chaff to do something with. While the junk could be used to build decks for the kiddies to learn to play with I really didn't like being so mean to them because if they ever faced a "real" deck they might think they stood a chance.

It is a **** shame that I love Star Trek, and these dopes have the license.
Schmucks!
