And lo, a great "meh" resounded throughout the land...

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

Let me ask you this then: How many stores regularly organize Epic tournaments? And how often do they do so in comparison to regular X-wing tournaments?

I think you just made my point for me. I can't answer that question, can you? So how can you be so sure that hosting separate events would work out the way you and Buhallin are claiming it will?

I can for the stores around my area: Zero. Because the turnup rate for Epic tournaments just isn't worth the effort of making them. Too few people own the big ships.

Meanwhile, regular tournaments are usually packed.

Alternating multiple events handles that quite well, but either way the point is purely hypothetical. Can any of us say with full certainty what the respective turnouts would look like at every game store?

Easy to check by a consistent standard - since the Epic ships launched about 12 pages ago (in the Organized Play forum), there are exactly two events listed for Epic.

He may have a point about some people really liking Escalation, though... there are four events in 12 pages for that one.

Of course, none of this actually stops people from running those sorts of events, including "No EU" or "No Scum Allowed" events. The question is whether FFG should formalize that. It's really all about having the weight of the company behind the "I don't want to play against that".

Edit: Ninja'ed on the reply. Looking for actual data takes a bit longer than just declaring it doesn't exist...

Right, but we're talking about the game on a broader scale. Making generalizations with zero practical data amounts to assumptions, not facts. The forums here are a terrible sample size of what's going on in the X-Wing community at large. So, maybe nobody would show up to modularized events, as you've suggested. Maybe the player base in my local area (or in other areas, whose opinions are not voiced here) is big enough to support multiple, faction based formats.

One would presume that FFG would be the one in possession of the greatest amount of data on this front, yes? They know at the very least where their stuff is getting sold, how many game night kits are getting shipped out, etc. I'd also assume they had some feedback from a broad range of testers when the original ideas were presented.

It would seem "Forumgoers don't have all the data" is trumped by "FFG has better data than all of us". So the fact that FFG chose not to split the game should carry some weight, no? Unless you want to argue that NOBODY, including FFG, really knows.

Let's just say I no longer have the faith in FFG's decision making process that I once had.

That's a shame. I'm confident that the people behind the decision to introduce S&V had the long-term health of the game in mind, and based on what's been previewed so far, the mechanical execution is up to their usual standard.

If you really don't like Scum, that's entirely your choice. But if you're going to suggest that FFG completely change how they produce and organize the game to suit that, there needs to be a little more substance than "It may work differently at different stores" and "It works for Magic and you don't get to comment because you're mean to Magic".

People asked how FFG might have done S&V in a way that I can appreciate, and I responded. In no way did I push my ideas on anyone; I merely elaborated upon them. If the expectation was that I, on my lonesome, completely brainstorm a workable way of executing those ideas, that would require considerably more time and forethought than I've been allowed, not to mention compensation for my services. Would you like to see some custom cards?

I think he would just like to see you not dismiss a viewpoint that is in no way critical of Magic (beyond stating at some point it had balance issues, which is also every game ever) on the sole basis that some threads ago he was fairly harsh towards Magic.

As I've said since I joined the forums a third faction was the most logical next step from a business stand point, two factions has a limited amount of design space and we are almost out of the well known ships, to keep the game healthy and profitable they needed to use the who universe.

It's clear they have no intention of abandoning older ships, if anything this will grow the community pulling in people that had no close tie to either rebels or imperials, it's a good thing.

Why don't you, and others that share your point of view, just organize a "classic x-wing" night at your local store, rather than be mad that FFG didn't do things your way? That way those of us that wanted S&V or EU ships get what we want, and you get the theme you wanted?

There's no reason to "loose faith in FFG's decision making process" just because you don't agree with them or didn't get your way. Personally I don't have faith in anything but death and entropy but so far I've been happy with everything FFG has released so far, and what I've seen of waves 5&6 seem to continue improving the game.
