My Gen Con Finals "Mistake" <<LONG>>>

By D4rkt3mpl4r, in X-Wing

Is this thread still going? Seriously, everyone let it go.

No you don't owe it to your opponent, you owe it to yourself, in the name of having some self respect and not needing to beat everyone regardless of how immorally you do it.

So now it's immoral to take advantage of a mistake? This is exactly the kind of attitude I object to, that you're a Bad Person if you don't help your opponent win the game.

You would probably smirk with self satisfaction as you watched your poor foolish sub human opponent forget to trigger an ACD, and then spring in to action with vigorous delight as you exclaim "AND MY FALCON GETS A RANGE ONE SHOT AT YOUR UNCLOAKED PHANTOM, SUCK IT MORTAL!"

No, I would just declare a shot and resolve it according to the rules of the game. If my opponent tried to claim the extra dice for being cloaked I would calmly point out that they did not cloak their ship and it is way too late to change that decision. If that wasn't enough I would call the judge/TO over to explain the "missed opportunities" rule to my opponent and resolve the situation.

At no point in this (or in any other part of the game) would I be your stereotype of a "WAAC" player.

Too Much?

Way too much. And frankly not as extreme as some attitudes I've seen.

In the two regionals I played this year, i've met plenty of very nice players. Rick and Grish comes to mind. I remember when everyone who made top 8 went for dinner in Kingston, except for Rick, who nobody really knew. We had to go fetch him back so he could have a beer with us!

I was in your seat last year at Gen Con, but I lost in the Semi Final. I let my opponent put back a ship on the table because he forgot that he could use the focus token to save it, only to be thanked later by getting denied a swarm tactic call. Oh well, when we think about it, it's not like there's anything at the end other than that little crappy plate! :P

What I like the most in tournaments, it's really to play a game that I love. And I would say that the community is awesome. Very glad you won Gen Con Rick! Does that mean that you now have to plan a trip to Worlds?

Some quotes from one of our Facebook Group

Gerry Russell : Rick is a class act and is a worthy champion. I watched the match in person and witnessed one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship in a title match. Rick forgot to recloak Whisper and Jeff graciously afforded Rick the action. That probably cost Jeff but it speaks volumes about many of the top players character.

James Binnie: It does speak volumes. I know Rick is definitely an honest and gracious player so it's so good to hear his opponent was the same. We have some great people who play our hobby and it's so nice to too see the top players characterize this well.

Way late to this thread, but what a post by Rick and an apology by Ben. Kudos to both of you! Definitely makes me (a relatively newish player) feel more eager to try the bigger tournaments with you guys flying in them. :-)

Just want to say to Rick, you're definitely a role model for me, both in the way you fly casual and in the way where you flew the list that was FUN TO FLY. I really admire that (especially since I also love flying the phantom and the shuttle) and look forward to watching the final to learn some tips from you.

Hope to play you some day in a tournament! Best of luck at Worlds!
