Who do you fly alongside Garven?

By BCooper85, in X-Wing

Hey guys,

I've never flown him before and am interested how everyone uses his ability which seems could be useful.

Your thoughts would be appreciated as I have game tonight against Chris and wouldn't mind flying him then : )

Kyle and Dutch all day everyday. You can throw in a bandit if you like!

Dutch is the go-to standard buddy for Garven.

So they just pass focus's and target locks between each other?

Kyle Katarn with moldy crow, scout, and blaster turret. Biggs with r2-f2. Jake Farrell when he is released.

So they just pass focus's and target locks between each other?

Exactly. There's some more tricks you can play with Kyle, Crow title and Recon Specialist for instance.

As I haven't got a HWK they'll just have to be best buds!

Does anyone use them to pass target locks and focus to another, lower PS ship to help them out?

Here's a quick list with what you have:

Garven Dreis (26)
R2-D2 (4)
"Dutch" Vander (23)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
R7-T1 (3)
Etahn A'baht (32)
Push the Limit (3)
Advanced Sensors (3)
R2 Astromech (1)
Total: 100
Most shots should be focused and target locked with Etahn boosting hits to crits.

I ran Garven alongside Corran Horn with FCS yesterday. Corran had focus from Garven and target lock from FCS for his second attack. Needless to say my brother was quite frustrated every time I rolled 3/4 or 4/4 at range one. I took out his Alpha Squadron pilot on the first turn, and with the help of my Gold Squadron Pilot and an Ion Cannon I was able to hunt down a Phantom as well. Nasty combo.

Gold Squadron Pilot (18) w/Ion Cannon Turret (5) + R2-F2 (3) = 26
Garven Dreis (26) w/Shield Upgrade (4) = 30
Corran Horn (35) w/Fire-Control System (2) + Engine Upgrade (4) = 41
97 points, could throw on another upgrade somewhere and still potentially grab initiative, but I used all of the upgrades I had and didn't really see where the list could be improved. Help is welcome, though =)

I'm gonna go ahead and use this tonight!

We're doing a 150 point game it seems so I'm thinking use an A-wing and another E-wing as flankers/nuisances.

With a 150 points, I'd add Biggs to keep the rest alive longer and maybe another X-Wing. That should do rather nicely.

This has worked well for me:

Wedge Antilles + R5-P9 + Swarm Tactics (34)
Garven Dreis + R2 Astromech (27)
Corran Horn + Veteran Instincts + Hull Upgrade (39)
Wedge always seems to be the target so keep Garven close to him and assign Focus for both. During combat, Wedge passes PS to Garven so you have option of Garven shooting before Wedge. If you do use Garven's focus, pass it to Wedge. Now Wedge has two focus and, if there's still one left over, you can fix shields.
Corran is there with high PS to move last and shoot first for optimum setup. Then you also have the option of making that crucial final kill when you great firing solution at end of combat. Don't worry about not firing in the next round - you'll be able to maneuver out of harm's way or maybe even have a chance for a target lock.

If you drop the R2-F2 you can bring Gold up to Dutch, the difference in PS should offset the action use to increase agility.

I'm not a fan of R2-F2 myself, really. I find the loss of an action to increase the green dice not enough of a benefit and rather have a higher PS.

If you drop the EU on Corran and change it into R7-T1 you might get the same effect (not always, you have to be in arc after all). That would allow you 2 points to equip Dutch and Garven with R2's to clear stress more easily.

Good shout I'll put Biggs and Rookie in which leaves me with 4 points. That's enough for a shield upgrade for someone....but who?

Bingo. Love this. I used EU on Corran quite a bit to boost into range one if I was coming up behind someone, so R7-T1 would be a little bit different. Getting the target lock + boost would be great, though. I'll try it out - thanks!

How did you get your hands on a shield upgrade? Those don't come with the expansions you have listed in your sig. Do you have an unlisted YT1300 hmmm?

Haha sorry dude I acquired some cards from forum member 0Dark when I first started, one of them being a shield upgrade!

Well, allright. :P.

My gut tells me to put the SU on Biggs, but the Mathwingers should be able to say if that isn't a waste of points with regards to survivability.

I've enjoyed putting Garven in charge of an XXXX list of mid-level pilots:

  • Garven
  • Biggs + R5-P9
  • Tarn
  • Red Squadron

Keep Garven close to Biggs, so that Biggs has a greater chance of having spare Focus tokens.

That's exactly what I first thought but I don't think one shield will make much difference if everyone has to shoot Biggs.

He really helps Biggs live longer especially if. Biggs runs R2-F2 and Garven gives him a focus

OK this is what I'm going to go with.

Garven Dreis (26)
R2-D2 (4)
"Dutch" Vander (23)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
R7-T1 (3)
Etahn A'baht (32)
Push the Limit (3)
Advanced Sensors (3)
R2 Astromech (1)
Biggs Darklighter (25)
Shield Upgrade(4)
R2-F2 (3)
Prototype Pilot (17)
= 149 points
Think it's a gamble putting that much on Biggs but I'm willing to give it a go once, will let you all know how I get on thanks guys : )

If you took the shield upgrade off of Biggs you could go with a green squad a-wing and move PTL to him and he would be more effective offensively and defensively.

OK so I lost but I really liked the synergy between Dutch and Garven, just need to fly them better!

The proto A was a mistake, or rather I flew him badly.

Basically I didn't fly very well! Think I need to sit down and practice....alot...

I ran this list twice last week and had good success:

Kyle + RC + Crow + Blaster Turret

Garven

RP x2

Clocks in at 99 points. You can throw a 1-point Astro on Garven to make an even 100.

The good thing about this list is that it has 12 attack dice, including 1 turret, and a very good yet simple combo that doesn't cripple the list if you lose Kyle or Garven.

Basically Garven and the Rooks use their actions to TL and you pass focus along from Kyle > Garven > RP. Kyle is the biggest target so keep him safe as long as possible. If your opponent guns for him early, punish him with 3 attacks, 2 of which will probably be with TL+Focus.
