X-Wing Online

By Zarynterk, in X-Wing

The first little bit was rough to learn but now I really like it. I've helped 2 people learn it.

One of the hardest things now is just getting the visual spacing down. I flew a BH off the board my second game.

Learning the spacing is hard, and takes practice. I also find that it's easier to set your dials to the wrong direction. I did that so many times when I first started. I really had to drill into my head to rotate my dials to the same direction as my ships. It's funny after I did the drilling, I've been much more relaxed and I drool a little more now.

Yeah that same game on my 2nd turn I 'flew' all my ships off the board but the guy let me change it so we didn't have to reset. lol.

Yeah, I keep losing my damage deck and I get angry at it! I think the screen management is the real pain in the butt.

From what I have experienced everything about it is a PITA.

I just went to the how to site listed a few post above and nothing worked when I clicked on it. I'll be damned if I turn off my pop-up blocker or anything else in my secure settings just to read how to use a frustrating and totally redundant interface.

Here is an idea... just PLAY X-WING!

Vas-sal Is A Has-sal.

Sadly considering that the mouse just killed the latest video game iteration of X-Wing (space combat simulator)...I would consider it unlikely.

Kind of reminds me of Sierra and their decision to kill Into the Fire. The B5 space combat sim. Both of these titles were killed after completion and right before release.

However, there is always hope that the darkside will relent. I do not know if mouse co. realizes what kind of a cash cow that virtual cards/ships/upgrades would be. Or perhaps it is caught up in legal issues. Licensing and Lawyers, the RPG.

This game SCREAMS for a tablet version. I would buy the hell out of it.

Way too much work for me. Have fun with the 800 files you have to download Terk.

Yeah not to be a jerk about it. I have looked into this thing a few times and it was always dragish or the site would not run smoothly, and there are a lot of confusing updates and additions and just a big mess to try to sort out.

If they want to make it user friendly then do it so that we non computer programmer elitist geeks can use the thing.

Then I read or hear (videos) from cool Wingers that I know are as smart or perhaps smarter than myself admitting they have problems using the program too...

Phooey!

Okay... I am done being a big lazy stupid crybaby now.

Honestly, what makes MTG Online successful is the fact that it provides a quick and easy way to play a game nerds love. And love enough to buy game components twice (Hasbro you sneaky vixen). "IF" FFG were to go the route of an online game board, Vassal would not be the direction to travel in. It should be easy to play and a code-writing free experience.

Vassal is very nice with a lot of hard work put into it.

However, a fully made game could really make the experience fun and more streamlined. Stuff like automatic damage after attacks, auto correcting movements that crash into other ships, etc.

They could just put serial codes on every expansion so when you buy it you can add it to your "virtual" fleet as well.

When you buy a core set it comes with a base that you can hook up to your pc or ps4.

Set your game piece on it and scans it into the game. Pilots and upgrades that come with it and any scenerio.

Have a single player tutorial for new players. Maybe even missions with some sort of story

Match making. The better you are the better opponents you will play. If you suck then your matched against those in the sane league as you, so you don't get discouraged.

Track stats. Such as win / lose. Dice rolls %, hit / miss %, what ships you've flown, games played.

Tournament.

Man how awesome would that be.

Be really cool if somehow you could link the ffg dice app to it as well, and roll the dice right off your phone.

It's not like GW or PP licensing out their IP to make games.

Actually, privateer press is working with whitemoon studios to create Warmachine Tactics:

Warmachinetactics.com

Seems to retain the majority of the functions of the tabletop version, though both sides have expressed their desire for it to play differently.

Just started toying with Vassal myself .. definitely a steep learning curve.

Actually, you only have to download 1. They changed it.

WHAT!!! Only one download. Their really makin' it hard for me to complain! i'm sure i'll find something to fuss about.

This would be a fantastic idea... and again I would buy the ships twice if necessary. The market is there, I don't think I'm the only one.

I am just a huge fan of Vassal. For those who do not have a huge competitive community at their fingertips, this is a great way to get great games against the world's best!

There's only two files you need to download now, the vassal engine and the x-wing module. There's three map packs but those are optional (unless you're planning to play Epic games. Also, Mu0n created an online guide ( http://s93768914.onlinehome.us/xwing/) to help new players instal it and get started, the process is much easier now. Setting up the multiple windows so that they work for you can be annoying at first but once you've found a setup that you like, the window will always open in the same spots. It really isn't nearly as complicated as it was previously.

Yeah, it's really not all that complicated now.

I don't think Disney had anything to do with it, I think the fact that it was a pretty bad game is the main reason it died.

If someone was to make a online version of xwing using stuff from FFS, but provided it for free, would that be a problem? No, right? I mean, that is what vassal is... Right?

I see what you did there... and to answer your question; sure Vassal is an option but if FFG actually developed a streamlined version that didnt have a huge learning curve and you could just download and go. I think many people would be interested in that.

Glen and Hunter are not dummies by any means and they had all sorts of problems with it... Wow!

They have communication troubles too, which was the first time I have seen them have this kind of error to this degree, which indicates to me that their computers had trouble running the thing while on hangouts.

Yeesh!

Now they admit they are doing this with little preparation, but still these guys are smart and they had all kinds of trouble coming into fresh.

Is Vasal this bad... really?

I've only once had any really issue with vassal and I'm pretty sure it was the other player's internet or laptop. Google hangouts however gave me all sorts of problems when I was playing edge of the empire via roll20. I just finished a 4 and a half hour match for one of the current tournaments against a guy from Australia (I lost), and we had no problems (other than a 12 hour time difference), not even a little lag.

The learning curve might seem steep, but its really not that bad once you use it a bit.

Well thanks for being cool and helpful man.
