X-Wing Online

By Zarynterk, in X-Wing

Much like many of you I'm sure, I play MTG online occassionally. Some of my friends don't because they think it's crazy to purchase two sets of cards and would rather just play in person. I have to admit however, if FFG somehow produced an online version of the table top game; same movements, dice, etc... I would totally be suckered in and buy all of my ships for a second time to play online lol...

What say the rest of you?

Um...you ever heard of Vassal?

Or you use Vassal and play it already. Solved!

I think it is important to note that you need to own the cards and damage deck to be able to play on Vassal. Most people use Vassal as an extension of their X-Wing hobby, and not as a replacement.

Well, actually you don't need to own them, and that's what OP was saying, as an extension, not a replacement.

I had no clue this even existed... where the hell have I been. For those of you who have used it, is it a decent site?

Yeah, it's awesome.

+1 for Awesome

There's enough reference websites for the card text too that you can, in theory, get around not actually owning the cards that are needed.

If you hunt around on here, or on other X-Wing fan sites, you'll find lots of references on getting yourself set up for it. There are some great Youtube tutorials for it as well.

Enjoy!

Yup I just found one; this rocks. For those who have used it; how is the user interface? Is it easy to use?

I am on all the time, I love Vassal. But I use it as a tool for showing to the game store on Tuesdays!

Once, you learn it, it's easy to use, but it's complicated.

The interface is a bit clunky at first and I was a bit frustrated with it when I first started. However, once you get over that, it is really an amazing tool. However, expect games to run 2 - 3 times as long. Unless you use Skype it can take quiet some time to play a game online.

It feels sort of clunky at first. Takes some getting use to, but once you get the hang of the hot keys it moves a lot smoother.

At times you may have 2-3 different windows opened up, but just closer them as everything will still be there.

Get it, mess around with the offline mode.

Here you can make and save your squad. Play around with it yourself and learn the basics.

To be honest with myself, what kept me from going online was I just never felt comfortable, until one day I just bit the bullet and went on.

I just tell whoever I'm playing to forgive me add I was new to the program and learning.

People are great on there and don't mind and even taught me along the way

Yeah, I keep losing my damage deck and I get angry at it! I think the screen management is the real pain in the butt.

Yep, everyone on there is super nice.

It's still at least a bit clunky at second, third, and eighteenth, honestly. It lives up to the most common standard of open-source software, which is to say that it's pretty good, and you can learn to get around or simply deal with the bits that aren't good.

Nevertheless, it's the only option if you don't have much of a local community and/or have geographically distant friends you'd like to play with and/or you have an infant at home and you need a version of X-wing you can play with one hand while you hold the kid in the other arm.

Lol, and I think that's where I was going with this thread. I'll be honest, even with Vassal out there if FFG did create an online version of the game; I'd still probably play it lol.

Also, for the bonus round, there is going to be a live cast of the 140+ person Galactic Cup semi final round TONIGHT at 9pm central. Can watch it on vassal directly or on twitch. Gives you a good feel for what the interface looks like while watching two Pros go at (with some really good commentary). Yeah, FFG doing an X-wing video game is really not likely. While the flight-path rules system is theirs, the franchise the game is about is owned by The Rat.

It's not like GW or PP licensing out their IP to make games. Vassal is all we will likely ever see available.

That said, if they could pull it off, even as a mirco-transaction system, I would probably spend my money on it.

As it stands though Vassal is a fantastic way to play online.

All the players that I've had a chance to play against or meet, have been very helpful to new players. We all know that there is a bit of a learning curve and are willing to help a new player learn the ropes. There's lots of good tutorials out there for this, so it's really not that hard to get up to speed.

I often run online tournaments, and so far I think they've gone over pretty well. The Galactic cup is almost done, but I have some big plans for some future events that will make the Galactic Cup look very small. :D

Why do you think I am playing so much on Vassal, it is to get ready for your next big tournament man! I can not wait!

See now I must try this vassal that all of you speak of...

The first little bit was rough to learn but now I really like it. I've helped 2 people learn it.

One of the hardest things now is just getting the visual spacing down. I flew a BH off the board my second game.
