XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

Page 8? Oh how the mighty have fallen!

I saw a new starwing thread on the front page and thought I should go in search of the old one.

Now if only the Gunboat appeared in this frame... (there is still hope!)

The only Imperial ship in that screenshot is the Nebulon-B. I doubt the gunboat will make an appearance.

Yeah, the Gunboat will appear in the OPPOSITE shot to that one.

I did try to kickstart the thread a while back but the keen seems to have gone :( Maybe I will have to make a Rho Squadron side campaign for Flight Group Alpha!

Anyway, this is some foolishness I took from the other thread. I don’t think it has legs but here it is...

My issue with the boat remains the weirdness with which it moves, basically relegating it to a lone flanker in my eyes

Other than that, it's still quite sexy. It's also probably a superior boron platform than the bomber or punisher!

Have never Boroned before. Need context.

It's an interesting upgrade

Definitely not worth more than the 6 you pay for, despite how amazing its ability may seem (in practice, things aren't so simple...****** dice). But, imo, it's the only other worthwhile missing (i.e, next to barrage rockets...Energy Shell Charges don't count)

A Nu with Passive Sensors/OS-1/DBM is a pretty solid way to spend 41 points.

Does seem interesting; Assault Missiles lite. Needs at least one reload to pull it's trick off twice though, which I guess is where OS-1 and Assalam would come in

seems so

but, despite redundancy, I'd like to try Borons on an ASLAM guy.

Because you spend two charges to go "kaboom", you run outta charges fast. This is fine on expendible Hyena bombers, but I was wondering if the more elite gunboat could make a show of SLAM reloading it

Oh, and Borons > Assault missiles. They work at range 0 too!

Seems like a good upgrade if you can fit it in, but that 41 point Nu just seems like it can slip in so easy.

I do keep thinking about DBM on Vynder (so weapons would be DBM and APT). 7 points cheaper than Proton Torpedoes, that lets Vynder keep Trick Shot, and Vader can take Sense, or anything else you want to do with those points.

But back on the potential of the generic, perhaps swap out an Inquisitor in a Jendon build for DBM, FCS, ASLAM Nu. Same 43 points as FCS/Conc.

Like, Jendon, Inquisitor, DBM Nu, and Soontir could be a solid squad, very much a "takes all comers" sort of list.

DBM is definitely something you'll need to take more into account if you ever run into networked CiS :p

In general, though, it's a great little burst damage missile. I think it's definitely worth experimenting with over an inquisitor

I had a cool game where I had a shot from a 41 pointer DBM Nu into like a Hyena and a damaged vulture. If I roll hits on the extra pop, I'd have killed two ships in a single shot. Focus/Focus.

Better than my luck

Baktoid has a DBM lock on Luke. Barely sticks the one hit.

At range 0-1 are Luke, Dutch, and Grievous

Spend an extra charge just to damage my Grievous 😑

Use two, pincer flanking moves?

I've done well on vassal with 3 nu's with brockets and Whisper juke and stealth dev. Or 3 with ion and adv sensors.

The Lord works in strange ways.

Advanced SLAM XG-1 without cannons seems really dubious. I'd rather have a shot with something like an Autoblasters than an action with Advanced SLAM, particularly if I don't have anything to reload.

Skipping Hate and taking Ion or Homing Missiles rather than Concussion would get the points for a pair of Autoblasters, or cutting down Supernatural Reflexes. Or swapping to Seventh Sister. She doesn't need a Force Talent more than Hate, doesn't really need missiles (she can't use them with her ability), and even FCS is probably optional. 46 for a Hate Sev would get the points for Autoblasters on these gunboats so they can actually shoot after a SLAM.

Nu/OS-1/Proton/Passive X 3 + Soontir Fel

Sound legit? Or nay?

Protons are too difficult to proc, ironically enough. You should have points for diamond borons andAPT though.

Vynder with OS-1/A-SLAM/Passive Sensors/Ion Torps/APTs(or DBM)/Outmanuver as a flanker. 65 points. Thoughts?

I like it in theory as the extra die on Ion Torps, and the Outmanuver defence drop, might finally make it likely for that ion to hit a crucial target. I'm losing the cannon flexibility, but ion cannons have been putting an average of zero ions on in games I've been playing with them. I'm thinking Vynder becomes enough of a flanking concern to turn the heads of aces away from other targets like Vader or Whisper.

I'm not sure I can fit it in a list I like, though. It's just those few points too expensive. It needs a bigger threat presence in the list alongside it to work effectively, but I'm not sure what actually gels with it and fits.

You can trim a couple of points with FCS and Ion Missiles if you need to, and you end up with my go-to gunboat build.

See, my problem with the ion missiles is that I may as well take the ion cannon and have the target flexibility at that stage. I'm looking at the ion torps specifically for that extra dice to push an ion onto aces.

I did say that it was if you needed to trim points ;)

The advantage over the cannon is the secondary weapon at range 3 and the os1 manoeuvrability with the APT. Anecdotally I haven’t found the torp to be any more reliable at giving ion tokens. Experiences may vary.
